The Ilythiiri - Dark Elves (Drow)

by the Ilythiiri Dobluth Empire, Europa Shard

For knowledge of the Dark Elf language and for aid in choosing a Drow name you can go here to research the Ilythiiri language in all of its dark glory. You can also find an English to Drow translator at this site. For more information regarding Drow Culture and society you can use this resource.

For Drow skin, use the top right skin colour as shown below.

If you cannot afford or do not have any hair restyle deeds to get white hair, then use the top left hair colour. Tradtionally Drow have long hair which can be pleated (two tails), tied back (pony tail), top knot or regular short hair.

Most Drow do not have facial hair and at the most they have a goatee (no beards).

The Dark Elves also tend to have a very peculiar taste and dark sophistication in what weapons, armor and clothing they favor.

After selecting a name and a starting template the next important decision is for you to decide what direction you want to pursue in your character development. If you have not played UO before you may find character development in this game to be a little different from many other role playing games. Unlike other games where you select a "class" or "profession" and then as you increase in experience you gain in your ability to perform a number of "class" specific skills. UO allows you to choose to develop your character in any of over 40 different skills. If you have played UO you will also know even though there is a large menu of skills to choose from you cannot develop extensively in all of them due to the skill cap. Any player that makes an attempt to develop as many skills as possible will quickly find that they cannot be all things to everyone. Despite the fact that you have the ability to develop any and all skills you will find that developing your character to a high level in a few skills will likely be more rewarding and less frustrating for you than trying to develop as many skills as possible.

In order to facilitate character development a modification of the "class" or "profession" system is used. This system is not meant to restrict the development of your character, it is meant to provide some direction in your development while still giving you a high degree of flexibility. They will also help you to find a useful role within the guild. All of these "classes" are crucial to our success and security. Although some may have more in-game role playing "authority", in reality, we need everyone to make the group work.

Remember that all dark elves should seriously consider learning Magery (so as to be able to cast 4th circle spells, and thus able to recall).

Class: Sargtlin (Fighter)

Primary Skills: Weapon Skill, Tactics

Secondary Skills: Anatomy, Healing, Parrying, Second Weapon Skill

Fighters are the main combatants of the group and represent the front line of defense and offense for the group. The mark of a fighter is the ability to be effective in both missile and melee combat as the need arises. Rather than break down specific classes of "fighters" depending on what weapon they choose to use fighters are those combatants that are most versatile in every combat situation. Two highly recommended secondary skills are anatomy and healing. Anatomy provides you with the chance to cause more damage in combat and also increases the amount of damage that can be healed using ones healing skill. Healing for any combat is needed to keep one alive. Depending on the choice of melee weapons the addition of parrying may also make a fighter more effective.

Class: Shebali (Rogue)

Primary Skills: Detect Hidden, Hiding, Lockpicking, Remove Traps

Secondary Skills: Stealth, Snooping, Stealing, Cartography, Mining

A rogue, or thief in more traditional role playing games is often viewed as a "jack of all trades." Rogues ply their trade in the pursuit of treasure by being able to pick locks and remove traps. The ability to detect hidden also provides the ability to uncover hidden or stealthing enemy characters as well as traps that threaten the rest of the groups members. Some rogues develop nimble fingers to disarm opponents while they are distracted. Finally, some seek the most lucrative treasures from treasure maps. Rogues may also be combatants and generally develop one or more combat skills. Like other combatants some secondary skills like anatomy and healing may also provide some benefit.

Class: Faern (Mage)

Primary Skills: Magery, Evaluate Intelligence, Meditation, Resisting Spells, Wrestling.

Secondary Skills: Inscription, Alchemy, Animal Lore, Animal Taming.

The most dangerous of drow, and the most likely to be encountered along outside of their Underdark communities (as opposed to fighting bands) are wizards. Drow wizards, especially males, are often driven into exile out of fear at the treatment they expect from those of rival Houses, jealous priestesses, and the angered authority of Lolth.

Dark elven wizards often become or accompany merchants, dealing with the surface world where their magic serves to protect and disguise them. Their endless need for more magical knowledge and spell components drives them into lots of adventuring, or the frequent hiring of professional explorers.

Some unusual familiars can appear in the company of these folk. Drow wizards favor watchspiders and hunting spiders as familiars, but more often employ snakes, spitting crawlers, pedipalpi, solifugids, and all manner of spiders, instead. The really fortunate ones acquire the companionship of an azmyth.

Class: Yathrin d'Loethe / M'thain d'Loethe (Priestess or Priest of Loethe)

Primary Skills: Anatomy, Magery, Mace, Parry, Meditation, Resisting Spells, Animal Lore, Animal Taming

Secondary Skills: Hiding, Stealth, Veterinary, Evaluate Intelligence.

Priestesses of Loethe are very aggressive figures in Drow society and used to ruling the males of their species. Male priests are extremely rare but some are known to exist in these odd times. The chosen of Loethe always are blessed with her spells and most tend to be as physically strong as they are mentally. Many have such a domineering presence that they easily control wild beasts and all have a talent for communicating and taming the referred creature of the Spider Queen. The main object of affection among Loethe worshippers is the spider. It is a offense punishable by death to kill or even maim a spider. Loethe gives unto her most loyal henchmen a poisonous spider to aid, guard, but also to watch in their furtherance of the religion. It has been known that a follower be killed by the so gracious gift from Loethe.
