A statue of Nostur’yl in Rivendell? How could this be you ask? Well the story is amazing and the history is deep, but never does it bore. Just last Wednesday, October 4th, Nostur’yl’s slave, the mage Lord Rathgith, completed a spell he had been working on. This was a great spell and required rare reagents that needed to be collected with special powers only Lord Rathgith possessed. Yet Rathgith could not fight the monstrous creatures that held the reagents he required for this spell. Rathgith often frequented the Hungry Halfling tavern in Rivendell. There he made many allies and spoke often of being freed from the bonds that Nostur’yl held on him. A few great people in Rivendell offered to aid Rathgith, to free him from Nostur’yl. Rathgith informed these people that he was working on a spell, one that would rid the world of Nostur’yl. He told them that he lacked three reagents: a vial of blood from a blood elemental, Beeswax from an efreet, and valorite ore from a valorite elemental. Rathgith informed these people that he would need to be the one to pick up the reagents from the monsters corpses, for only he could gather them without them losing their magical attributes. The fine people of Rivendell appeared to have no fear in slaying the monsters that Rathgith named, although each was very strong and difficult to fight.

On three separate night Rathgith came to Rivendell and sought out warriors to aid him in collecting his reagents. And each night he found willing men and women to aid him. First he took a group of warriors to the volcanoes in the lost lands. There they fought off a horde of fire breathing creatures, fire elementals, and efreets. After slaying a few efreets one was found that with the needed beeswax. The warriors guarded the corpse as Rathgith came to collect the reagent. It was a success! The first of three reagents had been collected. Rathgith left that night for the grueling battle at the volcano tired him.

A few nights later Rathgith again returned to Rivendell. This time the goal was blood from a blood elemental. A small group accompanied Rathgith to the deepest levels of the dungeon Shame. They fought off many elementals and suffered some losses, but in the end the blood was collected. Now with only one reagent remaining great anticipation and excitement was growing in the hearts of those in Rivendell who aided Rathgith.

Where could a valorite elemental be found? Research was done and it turned out that the valorite elemental could be brought out of the very mountain that Rivendell calls it’s own. Early one morning a group of citizens headed off to the desert of the lost lands in search of an enchanted pickaxe, one that would raise elementals from the mountain, a gargoyle’s pickaxe. Luckily through much labor and a great hunt two such pickaxes were recovered and taken to Rivendell. Now the citizens had to wait for Rathgith to return, and return he did. Several citizens immediately greeted him. Two miners were summoned and the pickaxes were put to use. It wasn’t long before a valorite elemental was unearthed. This creature was of great strength and took many warriors to slay. But soon it lay dead and Rathgith gathered the valorite. With the last reagent at hand he bid the citizens farewell and thanked them greatly for their efforts. He told them the spell would be ready soon, and soon it was. That brings us to Wednesday. Rathgith sat in the tavern drinking and enjoying company as he often did. But what no one knew was that this was no ordinary night. It wasn’t long before all would find out, and Rathgith’s spell would be shown to the world. Nostur’yl came to Rivendell shortly after Rathgith’s arrival. Rathgith met with Nostur’yl and made his payment to Nostur’yl, the spell to raise the obsidian post. Yet it was in the form of a scroll, Nostur’yl would have to cast this spell himself. With the scroll in hand Nostur’yl began to depart this plane and began returning to the abyss. Rathgith stopped Nostur’yl from his hasty departure and began to chant words of power that have never been heard by any that witnessed. Soon Nostur’yl was drawn back from the abyss that he had started to enter and soon he was returned to his full daemon form in Rivendell. Naturally Nostur’yl grew angered and readied to attack Rathgith. Before Nostur’yl had a chance to truly harm Rathgith he began to turn to stone. The spell that Rathgith had been working on was one of binding. As Nostur’yl had taken Rathgith into his control Rathgith would now do the same to Nostur’yl. Very quickly was this stone cast upon Nostur’yl. As the result of the spell Rivendell now has a statue of Nostur’yl that will greet all who come to the Hungry Halfling Tavern.

To call it a statue would be a lie, as it is truly Nostur’yl. There are many opinions of the stone Nostur’yl that sits in Rivendell. Most would like to see it leave. Some have suggested sending it to a museum. Others say drop it in the greatest depths of the sea. Some wonder if Nostur’yl can hear and see all they do. While others swear they’ve seen the stone Nostur’yl move. Many people fear that Nostur’yl will somehow be set free. And others have heard that the Cult of Infernal Necromancy has already begun planning to set Nostur’yl free. Perhaps these are rumors, or perhaps they are fears. In either case the fact that Nostur’yl is not dead and only encased in stone leaves the possibility for his freedom. Perhaps not today, next week, or months away. But someday, somehow, someone will find a way, and when they do may The Eledhwen protect us all.
