Virtue: Moral excellence, goodness; righteousness.
Conformity to one's life and conduct to moral and ethical pricipals; uprightness; rectitude.
Lord British established these beliefs he called the virtues, he gave them a name that people would revere, that they would seek to worship.
The very definition of virtue is purity, goodness.
Lies all of them.
Stated:
"Without Virtue as a code of conduct which people maintain in their relations with each other, the fabric of society will become weakened.
But we of Umbra do not worship the virtues and the fabric of our society is as strong as any, mayhaps happier."
Live by the virtues without worshiping them. Principal forged by Blackthorn,
Compassion:
"Thou shalt help those in need, or thou shalt suffer the same need."
Valor:
"Thou shalt fight to the death if challenged or that shall be banished as a coward."
Justice:
"Thou shalt confess to thy crime and suffer its punishment, or thou shalt be put to death."
Sacrifice:
"Thou shalt donate half of thy income to charity, or thou shalt have no income."
Honor:
"If thou dost lose thine own honor, thou shalt take thine own life."
Spirituality:
"Thou shalt humble thyself to thine superiors, or thou shalt suffer their wrath."
Reason these zealots cling to their ideas of the virtues is because they believe it is the right thing to do.
They are taught this and taught this continued to believe it. Much the way you teach a dog to go outside, not inside. Hence intolerance.
Lord British chose to control his subjects to reconstruct Mondain's Broken Gem of immortality, for it is said that when all the people of the land worship the virtues the shards will come back together again and what are these shards if not the shards of that broken gem.
All people born after the shattering will cease to exist, and only those born before will survive. Lord British knew this.
"Sometimes a pawn must be sacrificed to save a king"
