Maelwyn stood before her, looking pathetic and lost. Ceinwyn walked to where she stood, circling her, slowly, as she spoke.
"I gave you everything that I did not have as a child, and yet you still disappointed me. You and your brother had the advantage of being born in Caina, and you still pursued your druid ways. How many times did I wish that I had strangled you after your birth? How many?! I have lost count! Why can't you be more like your brother?! The problem with you, Maelwyn, is that you are too naive. You even had the audacity to go against me and help Molly!"
Ceinwyn slammed her gloved fist into her daughter's face, most likely dislocating her jaw. She felt the snap as her knuckles connected. The girl reeled back from the blow, shocked and off balance, blood spittle escaping her mouth. She brought a hand up to cover her jaw, too late.
But Ceinwyn was not finished.
Swinging her other fist around, she connected it with the other side of Maelwyn's face, knocking her head in the opposite direction. Maelwyn cried out in pain.
Pathetic
Maelwyn dropped to her knees, holding her beaten face in her hands, sobbing in pain and fear. Ceinwyn plunged her armored foot into the girl's side, snapping a few ribs. The girl fell sideways, yelling loud with surprised agony.
"Mother! Mother, please!"
Ceinwyn bent down over Maelwyn, as she lay, holding her side, weeping, and gasping for air. She buried her fingers in the girl's hair and clenched her fist. Yanking her daughter's head up, roughly, she spoke directly to her ear in loud harsh whispers.
"Of course, it is all my own fault, for sheltering you as a child. I coddled you, Maelwyn. I have noone to blame but myself..."
She opened her hand, releasing the girl's hair, and her head smacked to the floor. Ceinwyn seemed truly furious, and she flew into a rage, cursing at Maelwyn for all her weaknesses and her actions against her mother. Every curse was punctuated by a fist or a boot lodging itself into a different part of Maelwyn. The girl wrapped her arms around her head weakly to fend off the barrage of blows. She shuddered under the force of her mother's tirade.
Finally, Ceinwyn seemed to calm a bit, and she looked at the broken mess of her daughter lying upon the floor, barely alive. Her shoulders heaving with each breath she took, the only sign of her weak grasp to life.
"Where is your precious Lord Oaks, now? Ha! Your problem is your inner turmoil, Maelwyn. You still cling to the pathetic belief that all Life is sacred. It would be so much easier for you if you did not believe that. That is why I am going to remove that problem for you."
Ceinwyn called to her son, Myrddin, who stood just outside the door.
"Myrddin! Come and collect your sister. Take her down and put her in the cell next to Dan's."
As Myrddin entered the room and scooped his battered sister up, Ceinwyn looked at the wretched girl.
She will learn soon enough |
