It was a gloomy night with rain, monstrous thunder and bright lightning. Outside the small village of Cove, a trio of brigands was enjoying the spoils of their recent robbery of a caravan in their small camp. They sat in a circle surrounding a campfire, piles of gold, jewelry and other types of loot.

Hey! This ring looks good on me!” said one of the brigands displaying a diamond ring on his middle finger. The other two gazed the ring momentarily then went back to their loot.

Haha! Look what I found! A nice little necklace for the wife!” yelled out one of the other brigands as danced around with the necklace around him.

You don’t have a wife you dung licker!” said the last brigand in the trio in a stern voice.

Of course I do! I got… 1… 2… 3… Ah! I lost count!” replied the joyous brigand followed by a sinister laugh. The first brigand threw the ring back into the loot pile looking constantly around the camp area.

What’s wrong Geoff?” asked the stern brigand. The brigand named Geoff stood up slowly and began to move cautiously wiping the rain off his face

It feels like someone or something is watching us” replied Geoff. What the brigands did not know is that their friend was right. Standing a few yards away from them was the Lord Chancellor of Sanctus, Spawn. His fingers tightly grasped the handle of his sheathed bokuto as he stared at brigands from a distance. The rain dripped down his hat and armor but he still kept a cold stare at the group. He then began to walk towards the trio with his feet moving as slow and quiet as possible avoiding to make ay noise that might alert the brigands to his presence. Geoff still looking around with the feeling he and his group were being watched as his friends still were going through the loot.

Suddenly, there was a sound of a twig being snapped as if someone stepped on it a few feet away from the brigand trio within the woods.

What was that!?!” said one of the two brigands glancing over his shoulder. Geoff and the other brigands unsheathed their weapons and began walking towards the noise.

Who’s out there!?! Show yourself!” Geoff yelled out. There was another twig snapping sound that was much closer than the last one. The brigands kept walking closer to where the sounds were coming from. Out of the darkness came out a small pig walking towards the brigands.

Ah! It’s just a damn pig!” said the joyous brigand putting away his axe. As Geoff sheathed his dagger, a fireball came flying out from out of the woods. The fireball slammed into the chest of the stern brigand knocking him to the ground.

What the…!?!” Geoff yelled out as he looked around the woods franticly. Suddenly, Spawn leaped out of the woods with his bokuto unsheathed hitting the joyous brigand on the side with a blow that crippled his nerves causing him to be became momentarily paralyzed. Geoff looked at his friend then at the back of their attacker.

I’m going to gut you like a fish!” yelled out Geoff lunging at Spawn with his dagger pointed. Spawn glanced over his shoulder at the brigand who was quickly coming at him. He quickly moved out of the path of Geoff’s lunge and countered with a blow to the back from his bokuto. The brigand fell to the ground on his stomach letting out a loud scream of pain. The joyous brigand who was able to move stood up and began to make a run for it. Spawn looked at the fleeing brigand and let out a small chuckle.

Foolish...” said Spawn as he raised his hand in the direction of the brigand. With a magic chant, he launched a bolt of energy at the running brigand. The bolt struck the brigand in the back causing him to tumble to the ground unconscious. Geoff still feeling the blow of the bokuto attempted to crawl away. Spawn lurked over him with his bokuto in hand as if he was toying the injured brigand.

Who are you? What… do you want!?!” pleaded Geoff who rolled over on his back looking Spawn right in the face.

You are in no position to be questioning me scum!” Spawn replied raising his hand in the direction of Geoff. “Your days of looting and plundering are over brigand!” he continued closing his eyes. He then began another magic chant that made energy form on his hand. “Corp… Por!” Spawn yelled out getting ready to launch the bolt of energy at Geoff.

No please! I have a wife and son!” yelled Geoff. Spawn suddenly stopped and looked at the downed brigand for a moment.

A… wife…” Spawn said to himself. He turned away from the brigand and slowly began to walk dragging his bokuto on the ground with him. . “I have a wife…” he whispered to himself. Geoff slowly stood up and backed away from him. Dropping to his knees, Spawn looked to the sky feeling the rain hit and glide down his face. “What have I done? This is not me” he said to himself dropping his bokuto to the ground and staring at his hands. Geoff seized the opportunity and ran away as fast as he could. “Tika… what have I done?” said Spawn looking at the brigands who were knocked out from his attack. He slowly stood up, picked up his bokuto and began to walk towards the woods. “I must… go” he said to himself as went into the woods and disappeared.

She stood in the doorway looking around in horror and shock at the mess.

Spawn had not returned home in several nights, near on just over a week. Knowing how he could get wrapped up in his research and studies, she had not been too concerned after the first couple of nights. But he had not been away this long before. Knowing he was researching something important, she decided with a small laugh, she might just have to go remind him he needed food and rest too.
She left the house with a basket of dried cured meats and bread and, after preparing her mare, set herself into the saddle and headed out toward Sanctus. Once arriving she made her way up to his office. Turning the handle to his office door, she was not surprised to find it locked. He was known to lock himself in when he was deeply involved in his project and did not wish to be disturbed. She pulled her copy of the key from her satchel and slowly opened the door....

The sight that met her eyes made her drop the basket, her hands going instinctively over her mouth to stifle a silent scream. The books from his desk and shelves were strewn about, laying open and torn. Plants lay in broken pottery their roots showing through the dirt around the bases.."This was not her husband.. he would never leave so much as a book out of place" the thought ran through her mind. Carefully making her way over the mess of his office, she glanced into his laboratory to find it even more destroyed. Vials lay everywhere in broken shatterings of glass. Chemicals pooled together on the floor. What looked to be blood was splattered across a globe of Sosaria. Getting a quick bearing back on her senses, she quickly went through the side door leading to the stairwell to the jail. She called out loudly for the jailer. Hearing her shaky scream for help the gruff old jailer ran upstairs quickly. All she could do was point behind her. He set her aside gently and looked into the laboratory, a look of shock registering over his face.
"M'lady?" he looked at her in shock. " What has happened?"
" I .. I do not know .." Tika replied shakily. " He had not been home, I thought to surprise him. He is so particular about his laboratory and his surroundings.... everything in its place."
" Something is very wrong here.." she said starting to break down as thoughts of what could have happened to him began to form in her mind. Glancing at the blood on the globe, she went pale at her thought and began to shake. The jailer quickly closed the door to block her view and told her it was best they not disturb anything until the men could arrive to study it. He helped her to a small settee and bade she stay there while he went for help. He then went to the main door to the Chancellors Office, spying the basket of food she had dropped, he picked it up then closed the door to the office firmly behind him. Thought's ran through her head ."Who had done this ? Who had taken him? What had happened... was he hurt badly somewhere.....the blood on the globe showed itself to her mind once more .... was he .. alive?"
"Where are you , my love .."she sobbed, quietly calling out to him

The gruff jailer set the basket at her feet, feeling helpless to ease her fears as she sobbed into the pillow on the settee.

He quickly left to call out the alarm to the Guards and get the help he needed at the jail.
