She stared at the scarab in front of her set with a special fire ruby to represent the beautiful red of Jode's eyes. Kel gave it a name, that she felt made sense. He called it a "Quortek Ruby", since quortek in drow meant soul.

She turned it over to reveal the inscription on the back, Jode in hieroglyphics. She smiled as she turned it over again and traced it with her fingers. Thinking to herself this is an appropriate way to keep Jode's soul safe. Scarabs are normally used for protection or love. He was her friend and she wanted to keep his spirit safe.

With a deep breath she began lighting candles and incense made of special herbs for this. She took a last glance at the gem as it seemed to wink at her in the light and then closed her eyes. She began to chant, "His heart is true, having gone forth from the balance." Over and over she repeated the words and she was able to feel his spirit come forward. As it left her mental barriers became lessened.

Finally after quite some time she felt freed of the spirit. She opened her eyes and saw the safe glow in the ruby. It almost seem to swirl and dance as if there was a life to it. She touched it and could feel the energy within it. "You are safe my friend." she spoke.

She picked up the gilded box, inscribed with protection spells and Egyptian art. I was inset with a special linen lining, carefully she placed the scarab inside of it. Closing the lid, she locked it carefully. She wiped a tear as she stood up to put the box in a safe place. Her friend would be with her always and in time possibly united with the other half of his true self but for now she would be it's guardian.

Jode could feel it, he could feel it all about him....

...the inevitable was happening, the Oblivion that had once spawned his very being was surfacing amongst his own flesh...

...it began through his waist...spreading out around it look roots seeking whatever nourishment it could find and sink itself into...

...as its stretched down below and consumed his legs, it was as if a dark mist shrouded all his vision around him, for what was once the mystic surrounding of what seemed like a pyschic aurora about him, now become nothing more but darkness sinking closer and closer at him.

Jode could feel it creeping along his chest now, and his right arm was beginning to spawn the wretched darkness as well, easily having taken his left arm as well as his shoulder. Whatever hope which had sufficed him for so long to hold back this enveloping darkness of Oblivion was now lost, and all that was left was to lay back and accept it. His eyes wide, his body floating for its final moments adrift Ishtar's mind, all that was left was but to seize the very shed of light that had always shined so bright within the priestess's mind.

His eyes wide, that constant light now seemed to change. It grew deeper shades of crimson now, as the light's shine was redirected over him. A ruby red, so it would seem, fell upon his deterioating body, and as he embraced the red glow above him so did the consumption stop from the Oblivion that crawled below him. All that was left was his torso and left arm, but all the darkness followed behind as he was lifted up into the ruby red light.

When he reached it, he seemed to soar headfirst through a tunnel of swirling energies, energies unfamiliar to him but relieving all the same. As what was left of him passed through, so did his shadowy remains, and before he knew it time seemed frozen all around him. Now he was staring, wide eyed, surrounded by what seemed like a transluscent red stone. It was all very hazy, but the consumption had stopped and his mind was still his own. He stared intently as the woman looked back at him, but he could not move his face to express the surprise that was overcoming him.

"Ishtar..."

She was just now opening her eyes, as his blank stare saw nothing but her as he took a moment to gaze back. He could not know whether he saw her or not, but he could see her, and as she held the scarab she moved her lips which also rang true into his mind.

"You are safe my friend."

"Friend..." thought Jode to himself, and that alone was his final pyschic murmur as she put him away in safe keeping.

"...friend."
