There was food everywhere, the house was filled with the aroma of baking and a soft humming was heard from the top floor. Her eyes kept trying to shut but she refused, perhaps, he would be home today. As she had hoped each day.
Knead the dough for five minutes then place in a bowl covered in a warm dry place to allow the yeast to rise….
Cooking, she had been doing it for days. Her face was pale and her apron was covered with flour and sugar, perhaps even a dash of cinnamon.
She couldn’t smell it, and it really had no taste to her, so frankly she had no idea wether it was any good but it kept her busy. She had tried to paint but her paintings all started reflecting the same thing and the same person and it made her scowl to look at them.
She had found herself to be poor company, she had tried the night before to get out, and take her mind off things. Lotte had spent most of the time consoling her morose friend. It was of little use, she would cook until she dropped. She would cook until the hunger overtook her and she fell down into a deep sleep. Odd that food surrounded her but her hunger only grew.
She had written a quick note to Lotte,
Dear Lotte,
Thankyou for your kindness of last eve. I was quite distressed and you definitely have the gift of calming. Please if you see my beloved before I do, tell him he needs to hasten home….
Your friend,
Ary
Her hand shook badly and she wondered if Lotte would be able to read her scribble. Her stomach cramped and she stumbled abit attaching the letter to Astrum's BlueBird to deliver. Pressing her hand against her stomach as it cramped again, she made an odd face and dropped to the floor.
Her eyes slowly closing she thought, but I have a pie in the oven, it will burn… |

Lotte looked over the flowers in the garden, and began to hum. She felt bad about singing the lullaby to Aryanna, but had only wanted to cheer her up. Rainbows do not mean just happy, she thought. I must have been tired myself to sing that song. Her mind drifted off to the song she had sung the night before.
"Pink elephants and lemonade," she sang, swaying her hips to the song as she started picking the flowers. Suddenly she felt herself get tired, and shook her head.
"No, that's a lullaby. No lullabies!" she said aloud, glaring at the flowers as if it were their fault. Grabbing the last flower for her bouquet, she teleported to the front of Aryanna's house. Sniffing, she smelled a slight hint of cinnamon raisin bread.
She made bread? She should have made cheesecake, she thought, then walked in.
"Why didn't you make cheesecake Ary?" she called, looking around. Suddenly she dropped the flowers. Aryanna laid on the floor asleep, surrounded by dough, flour and other ingredients, fast asleep.
"Oh, no!" Lotte looks around ferverently, and saw the note written. She squinted her eyes, trying to read the writing. She read the letter aloud to herself.
"Dear Lotte, Thank you for your kindness of last ewe? Oh! eve. I was quite this dress... noo.. oh! distressed and you definitely have the gilt? gold? err.. oh! gift of calming. Please if you see my beloved before I do, tell him he needs to hashen, what's a hashen? err... hasten, yes hasten home….
Your friend,
Ary
Frowning, she stared down at her friend and began to cry. She knew it was her fault. All because she sang that lullaby, her friend had fallen asleep. She sat down, and thought. She jiggled Ary's sleeping body, and received no response. Finally she began yelling. "Ary, wake up!" She looked down, and no response still. "Fine then," she said to the sleeping figure. "I will just make the loudest, most awake song ever. Then you have to wake up." Nodding to herself, Lotte left the house, her mind filled with a new melody to sing. |

It was peaceful but rather cold and dark. Ary could feel herself slipping away the torpor tugging at her mind, pushing her gently deeper into her sleep.
What could she expect? She had done this to herself, but she had felt there was no way to exist not knowing if he lived or died. She searched about her mind feeling a bit trapped calling out to him softly, my love...can you hear me? She wished she could just see him, just know that he was okay.
A Nightmare filtered its way into her sleep horror chasing her into the deeper recesses of her mind she curled up locked there like a prisoner until a soft music filtered into her mind.
It was last nights lullaby sung beautifully by her friend, her favorite song dancing thru her head and gently pushing the nightmare from her head...
Candy kisses and a sunny day...
Instantly she clung to that, though they reveled in the dark together thier happiness made them sunny, his gentle kisses, it would pull her thru she would not lose herself, not forget everything...
Suddenly she heard Lotte crying, and she jumped excitedly within herself, Lotte was here! She was here and she could hear her. She struggled wildly to move to make some acknowledgement to her friend, but alas her prison held firm. Yet the music, the music could penetrate it...
Silently she listened to her friends growing frustration, feeling helpless, just praying her friend would break into a lively song, maybe just maybe the musical powers of her friend could break thru and pull her back from the darkness slowly consuming her mind.

“Alright, don’t hit the… no… there. Yes. No, over there! No don’t drop… eeek!” Lotte looked at the ragtag group and sighed. But she needed any help she could get, the beat leader especially. Well, sure, she didn’t get just a tambourine, but did he have to keep dropping the metal bucket? Rubbing her ears, she started moving her hands. “Now you, there… no. There. Yes. Alright, you there. Good. The lute is tuned? Good. You? The harp done? Good.” She ushered them to their spots in the kitchen with a determined look in her eyes. “Everyone ready?”
The group of peasants looked at her confused, seeing the sleeping body. The rhythm keeper looked especially confused. He had old native drums, a tambourine and metal containers that had been sawed at the edges. She held up a stick, and looked at them.
“Now play my music,” she said, and they all looked at the music sheet in front of them. One peasant, in front of the lap harp, raised her hand.
“How do you expect us to play this?” she asked, looking in horror at the music in front of her.
Lotte waved her hand dismissively. “Don’t worry. It is playable.” She then moved her hands up and looked at them. “Alright, on fourth count. I will start singing and stop conducting so it better be perfect.” The peasants looked at her again. She heard one whisper the word fool, but knew they would comply. The music struck up, and she waved her hand, stopping them.
“On four!” she yelled, then conducted, one, two, three four. The music started and Lotte begin to move her body to it.
“Let me take you down to Paradise City…” she sang, and looked worriedly at the harpist, and motioned her hands to make it louder. “Oh won’t you please take me home.”
The drummer looked exhausted, trying to keep up with Lotte and the lutist looked sincerely confused. Lotte just looked at them and raised her hands, indicating to get louder.
The sleeping figure on the ground began to move her head. Lotte got louder and motioned for the lutist to play faster. His face pained, he complied, muttering about bloody fingers. The figure looked over blinking. Aryanna looked at Lotte and began laughing. “What are you doing?” she asked, looking at the group in disbelief, the music off rhythm and slightly out of tune.
Lotte looked at Aryanna and smiled. She stopped singing, and signaled the group to stop. “Well, I sang and put you to sleep. So, I woke you up.” Lotte smiled brightly at Aryanna, who looked at the extremely confused peasants. The lutist was looking with worry at his hand. Aryanna just smiled at Lotte, then shook her head, and let her thoughts be filled with the joy of the music being sung. |

Was that music she heard? Again it broke thru her prison and this time it was loud. Aryanna wanted to cover her ears, someone was seriously out of tune....
The music continued though she heard the strains of a harp, and some sort of metal containers? She began to struggle violently with herself the music was happy...and then....it happened.
A voice, a voice she new so well, it filtered thru, the instruments lost meaning their crude music fading away as the voice soared strong and loud into her mind. It pushed at her, called her, pleaded with her as if to say..dont leave me, dont lose yourself.... The words were happy and wild making her want to laugh causing the darkness to begin dissolving and with snap it would soon break.
Perhaps it wasnt to late, perhaps she was not totally lost. The small kitchen filled with a power unknown and untested. Music transcended all and pulled the sleeping girl roughly back to conciousness.
She new she would see her, she knew Lotte would be there. though she was not expecting the rag tag band of strangers staring at her. She could but laugh and blush as she stared back at the odd musical menagerie standing about her.
Art was a beautiful thing, wether it was music, cooking, painting it held a magic all its own and was held strongly, reverently in the hearts of these two young friends. |
