Thrax sat quietly in his office in Papua many minutes after Magnate Isk and Lady Angelique had departed. If he had retained his goatee, he would be stroking it. As it was, the index finger and thumb of his right hand rubbed only the bare flesh of his narrow chin. It did little to soothe his restlessness. He wasn't feeling well; had not for several days. It was as if he was being pulled inside out. Sleep did not come easy and his dreams had been filled with images of a realm that he had seen long ago. He tried keeping his mind focused on what had just transpired in the meeting with Isk and Angelique and what the ramifications of the dialogue could be for him and his government.
They had come from a meeting of the Regency and they came with a valuable gift; a copy of the formula for the cure of citizens in Papua who had been poisoned. It had been penned originally by the one he knew to be the true author of the poison, an admission recorded within it. He knew it would work and that, soon, all the citizens of Papua who were now existing week to week taking the "draught" to sustain them, would be fully cured, no longer dependent upon him for their salvation from the poison. He was not too worried about that. His minions were many, most of the wealthier classes, and well paid, or paid off. Papua was in no danger of revolution. Still, the current way of things was about to change and a new plan of action was needed.
His thoughts went to matters at hand: the need to extradite the drow, Dharzhal, for interrogation and trial. At present he remained in Luna under the protection of the Royal Court of Light. They were slack in honoring the request. He decided to increase pressure on them. Finding pen and parchment, he wrote a letter to the Emperor Tai Kwan. He sealed the letter and set his sigil upon it, delivering it into the charge of his most trusted courier. Advising him to watch his manners and bearing before the Emperor, he sent him on his way.
His business in Papua completed, he returned home for a meal which he ate alone. Having finished that, he went to his bedchamber and lay down. Soon he had drifted off into the sleep that had eluded him for so long. |
