Claudette sat in her garden listening to the birds and watching the wind sway the leaves on the trees. It was a beautiful start to the day and it reminded her of the calm that comes after a violent storm. That’s how she had felt when she met Drayden at the Freehold the other night, as if a hurricane had blown through her soul, unsettling everything and leaving nothing untouched. His actions had hurt her and his words caused her to feel as if she had been slapped.

She had arrived at the Freehold hoping to find some answers, but upon her entrance only felt more confusion as she saw Alessandra sitting with him. She too looked rather confused and it was soon discovered that he had agreed to meet both of them at the same time. Claudette felt that Alessandra was genuinely sorry and although it was hard for her, she truly could not hold Alessandra responsible. Had Drayden shared some of his past with her and the feelings he and Alessandra shared, this would not have happened. Drayden tried to explain himself but his words were harsh. He told Claudette that she was incapable of the kind of love he and Alessandra shared. Like a hard blow to the stomach, his comment caused her to take in a sharp breath and she looked away fighting back the tears.

Sitting there at her garden and thinking about Drayden’s words, Claudette began to realize that perhaps he had never cared for her at all. Her cousin Brianha had always been concerned about her feelings for him because it seemed he never had the time to devote to her. Perhaps I was blinded by the feelings I have for him, she thought. Maybe Brianha had been right all along but Claudette had learned that in life, you needed to make mistakes in order to learn from them.

Wiping away the single tear that had escaped her eye, she went to her writing table and began to write a letter.

Dear Drayden,

Your words the other night hurt me and caused me much distress and anger. I do not know what I did to deserve such treatment from you but it is obvious to me now that you never cared for me at all. I do not know what it is you sought from me. What pains me more than anything is your dishonesty. I would never dream of coming between two who are already in love, that is not the kind of person I am. Had you been honest, perhaps we could have just shared a close friendship.

We have many mutual friends and I do not want to put them in the middle. Just know that my heart aches because of your actions. I know now that you will do what you can to salvage your relationship with Alessandra. I only wish you to be happy for when you love someone; you do not wish him or her ill. Go on, be happy and always know that you will hold a special place in my heart always.

Claudette

She sealed the letter with some wax and spoke the words that took her to Drayden’s home. Taking a last look around, she left it on his front step wondering if he would ever reply.
