Mallory deeply inhaled the fragrance of the beautiful rose as she readied herself for bed. She had once before received the petals of such a flower, but this flower seemed to radiate the happiness she felt every time she thought of her beloved. Smiticles seemed to know her love for nature. She longed for an afternoon to take him to her most cherished location. She had never taken anyone there and she hoped he would enjoy it as much as she did. She sighed softly as she looked over at her armor, freshly repaired and her sword glimmering in the soft candlelight. Perhaps after this quest they could have an evening picnic there, just the two of them.
She smiled and pulled out a piece of parchment and began writing…
Dearest Smiticles:
For a long time, I have lived, dependent on no one, answering to no one and committed to no one except myself. During this time of my life, I truly believed that I was living life to the fullest. When you became a part of my life, I realized that I was deceiving myself.
I find that my life is not all that I thought it was. In fact, it is terribly lacking in many things, the foremost being love. Now, through some great fortune, I have found that love and along with it the one person who can make my life truly complete. You offer me the promise of renewal, the joy of living, and the peace of mind that comes from sharing and caring. I can only hope that I can offer as much to you as you do to me. My darling, from the moment we met, I hoped that our friendship would develop into something lasting and precious, and it has. Just as the caterpillar one day becomes a butterfly, I truly believe our friendship is developing into something equally beautiful.
I have undeniably fallen hopelessly and completely in love with you. To be honest, I never thought I would ever utter those words, but now, they come forth effortlessly and with great sincerity. I shall be forever grateful to you for showing me just how shallow my life was. At last, I have a chance to give it depth and purpose.
I know it is difficult for you, as it is for me, to be separated for so long. Life seems to be full of trials of this type which test our inner strength, and more importantly, our devotion and love for one another. After all, it is said that "True Love" is boundless and immeasurable and overcomes all forms of adversity. In truth, if it is genuine, it will grow stronger with each assault upon its existence. I cherish any thought of you, prize any memory of you that rises from the depths of my mind, and live for the day when our physical separation will no longer be. Until that moment arrives, I send to you across the miles, my tender love, my warm embrace, my undying love and eternal devotion.
I remain totally yours in thought and spirit.
Love,
Mallory
Mallory set down her pen and gently blew the ink dry. She sealed the letter with a bit of wax from the candle nearby and wrote his name on the front. She took it out to the entrance area and placed it in the box for the messenger. He would know where to take it. She returned to her bedroom and laid her head on the pillow and quickly was cloaked in sleep and dreams. _________________ Good friends are like stars. My dearest Mallory;
Once again the winds of misfortune conspire to keep us apart and it pains me to know we can not yet be together. Soon, soon my love we will be together again and I fear that when we do met, our embrace will be of such force that even the mightiest will lack the strength to pry us asunder. I find it amazing that two free spirited and independent people such as ourselves could find each other the way we have. Truly the fates have shone down upon us.
I have spent many years searching the lands and accumulating treasure of all shapes and sizes. None of the jewels or gems I have uncovered over the years can compare to the treasure which I have found. You are the treasure of all treasures. Your beauty is immeasurable against even the most glorious of riches. I could cast off all my worldly possessions and my wealth would still be beyond measure simply by your holding of my hand.
I wish to walk the forests with you. I yearn to visit far off, exotic locales with you by my side. I covet your presence and your beauty by my side as I venture forth in this world. Should I ever be called off to battle it will be your visage which will guide me and drive me to return safe and victorious.
For the time being I must be satisfied with your thoughts and your love buried within the words you write to me. I cherish your letters and long, no, I crave to be with you once again.
Until that time…
Yours,
Smiticles
Finished, Smiticles seals the envelope and pens a short poem on the back before sending it off with the gypsies…
A Love Song for Mallory
My love, we will go, we will go, I and you,
And away in the woods we will scatter the dew;
And the salmon behold, and the ousel too,
My love, we will hear, I and you, we will hear,
The calling afar of the doe and the deer.
And the bird in the branches will cry for us clear,
And the cuckoo unseen in his festival mood;
And death, oh my fair one, will never come near
In the bosom afar of the fragrant wood.*
* Once again due to my lack of poetic skill I borrow from the classics. This poem is attributed to William Butler Yeats and is entitled A Love Song. |
