It seems the meeting with the wraith had more impact on his thoughts than either of them thought.
Alyx walked to a library of runes, to find a comfortable inn he would spend the night at. On the way, he sunk deeper and deeper into thought of the conversations of the night.
My own set of virtues, my own way of the 'paladin'.
Valor, a virtue for those too stupid to feel the fear they should when facing an enemy much stronger than themselves. There are much more cunning ways of dealing with a monster stronger than yourself.
Honor, a virtue for those who would like to coat the truth in candies. In the most catastropic situation, with a powerful enemy to defeat... If your paladin order was wiped out, would you sit and cry, or would you enlist the aid of assassins? Necromancers? Those that could get the job done, just not as picture perfect as you'd like.
Compassion, a virtue that is supposed to even be used on your enemies. If you blink because of compassion, considering being merciful to an enemy, they will stab you in the back. Besides, if you do not unleash the rage Compassion supresses, it will not go away. It will explode on those that are actually deserving of kindness.
Justice, a virtue for those that feel they must police the world in the name of their code. Butting their nose into others business. A virtue for those that think their code puts them above others, and gives them a right to judge. Humble indeed.
Honesty, a virtue for those that wish to live blissfully ignorant. Such information can be obtained in a simple lie. Great things can be done by simple misinformation. Should one be honest all the time, and live the life of an empty shell that has no thoughts or secrets of their own?
Sacrifice, need I think more of it? Those too weak to go on will beg and plead for you to share your strength to compensate for their weakness. Those that have done nothing to earn power ask you for yours when they are not deserving.
Humility, such an interesting virtue. Should one not be proud of their life and accomplishments? If you saved the world, why put yourself on the level of a shepherd?
Spirituality... Finally, the belief that, holding true to the other seven, 'good' and 'light' will always conquer 'evil' and 'darkness'. There are simply too many factors involved in most situations to simply believe that all will be okay if you hold true to this silly code. A weak paladin cannot defeat a strong foe, no matter how much they think their code will save them. Being an automation of the virtues will not save their wasted life.
From now on, I will be the only of my kind of paladin. The hero they do not expect, the one they did not picture, mounted on his magnificent white steed, with his shining heavy armor, his shield bearing a proud crest, weapon that supposedly strikes fear in the heart of evil.
They will see, someday, when the shining paladins will have their wings torn asunder, and when they are bleeding and broken, just who saves the day with a poisoned dagger in the back of the foe their code could not defeat. They will see.... I will make them see. _________________ "Sincerity is the finest point of communication." --Fortune cookie
