|
Isk had said some things that surprised me. Ofcourse he as always acted the part of a gracious and humble host. Yet, as the night wore on and the more of that Utopia mixture he took...the more he wanted to talk about a certain rumor going on. A rumor that I must find out if true. But one that I feel would be...perhaps it could be...
A weapon that can slay me he stated. He asked me if that was true. Chuckling I stated not to my knowledge. I have fallen many times only for my body to heal and regenerate. I know of no such weapon. Good thing Ditto was at that time out and about in another room chatting with Angelique. I would not want her to search for everything out there that might be able to dispose of me.
He stated a box, which made me pause thinking that is was the chest and that there may a trail leading up to it, and into my hands, but it was not the same. The box that he described held a weapon. Could it be?
I must find out more on this weapon while continueing my search for the chest. Many enemies lurking in the background I am sure, and my plans no where near completed.
Ditto and I shortly left after she came back. It was late and I had things to ponder on and find out.
I am afraid that my physical changes are not able to be hidden from view. The eyes now always show a red luster to them, and my teeth...whenever I smile would be abel to be seen. Soon though even without smiling. My skin is turning pailor towards a light blue. And horns are starting to grow from my hair, as one of my servants noticed while combing my hair with her squeek. The more I keep inside and the more I fall in battle my form changes. The beast will show itself perminatly for the world to see...
Could put a major damper on swaying people to my side...I must find out about this rumor as well as why Isk was so damn curious and wanting to know...
What exactly does the man know...
What does the future hold for this grand chess game I play... |

Ditto sighed in comfortable exahaustion as she draped her still clothed body across the bed.
Dinner with Angelique and Isk had gone by particularly pleasant. At least pleasant on thier part. Tarothin had been another story. Angelique made a fine and welcoming hostess. Down to earth and not all-consumed with stuffy formalities and such. And Isk seemed almost as kind and curteous as he had a while back, before all the politics of the Regency. He still carried the air of careful movements and the undertone of goading insult at times, but the later was one of the reasons she had liked him before. Dignified mischief is how she thought of it and found it most amusing even when directed at herself or even at Tarothin. But something had been off this night. She had no inkling as to what and the mixture of the liquid Utopia didn't seem to help her senses figure it out either.
She had known she was annoying Tarothin when she related the story of their first kiss to Angelique, but he had known or at least should have, not to speak for her when she was sitting right there, as if it were some inuendo of an order to her, when Isk offered her the wonderfully smelling mixture. Tarothin Armunn may be lord of the Dark Order but she was no soldier, and would not be ordered about as such. And so, at her first opportunity, with her husband's attention turned, she drank a long sip of the mixture. It was shortly thereafter, that Tarothin seemed to be trying to hold her hands with one of his own, quite forcibly instead of sweetly, though she didn't know why. He didn't normally like lint all over his armor and she was only trying to help. Magincia was usually a lovely place but for some strange reason had seemed to have sprouted lint .... after her sip of the mixture. _________________ **************************************

Having appraised the set up of the chairs and tables which his wife had organized on the veranda along the north east side of Magincia for the meeting Isk nodded finding all to be in good order. They both knew that within moments Tarothin and his wife would be waiting at the elevated podium for their escort to the location of the dinner.
“Lets walk to greet them” Isk suggested and observed his wife comply with a nod. They had both spoken of strategy earlier and knew what paths to take the conversation on. Angelique would supplement her husband’s words of business with gentler inquisitive questions about Ditto’s personal life with Tarothin. “If he feels uncomfortable he will want to drink, and that is when the ‘Phantom mixture’ enters play”
“When the time is right I shall rest it on the table, dear” His wife expressed just as Tarothin came into view.
* * * * * * * *
As everyone sat down the porcelain masked ambassador allowed them a few moments to take in their surroundings. The site had been expertly chosen as the tropical trees of Magincia opened to present the pale blue waters of the sea. The slightest breeze came in from the beach as Ditto commented on location. Wishing to have a positive start Isk sat in contemplation as his wife began discussing family life. There was a certain level of friendship which was being built purposefully.
Sensing that the moment was right Isk turned his expressionless porcelain masked face towards Tarothin “I’ve heard this strange rumour lately” wanting to court his curiosity Isk modulated his voice to sound more like a troubled friend as his wife kept Ditto occupied with womanly talk. “There is a rumour of a certain sword that can kill you” Isk lied blatantly and listened as Tarothin commented on his rapid healing abilities which caused Isk to lean back into his throne like chair at the head of the table and nearly sink into the cushioning. “I was told that it is in a box of some sort” Isk turned away from his guest and reached for a small bag of blueish powder which he sprinkled on the food, an action which caught the attention of everyone.
“A box?” Tarothin questioned as his eyes seemed to momentarily glimmer.
“I know nothing of a box” The guest was obviously uncomfortable now though his apparent change in posture and mannerism was threatening. Knowing that Tarothin could likely decimate the room should he chose to do so Isk began to tread more lightly.
“Good good, then you are not in danger. My wife has created a most interesting potion.” Isk began to change the subject as he noticed Ditto take the Utopia laced food into her mouth. “It is made loosely from Utopia but its main ingredient is much rarer”
On time Angelique produced the ‘Phantom mixture’ and set it on the table much to Ditto’s interest.
‘If I cant addict him his wife would be a suitable replacement for the test’ Isk thought to himself knowing that because the main and quite secret ingredient was the blood of a vampire he would need the person to drink the mixture on at least three occasions to have them become an addict as the book on the Blood Bond had explained to him.
Terothin was immediately distrustful of the drink while Ditto reached for it. “Just one drop will do, Ditto, mix it into your wine” with a gloved hand Isk gestured to the Phantom mixture and the wine glass Ditto held in her hand.
Much to his relief Ditto drank the mixture with her wine causing Tarothin to display yet another strange physical shift. ‘Are his teeth all sharp?’ Isk questioned what he had just seen as Tarothin opened his mouth to speak about the Regulators for a time.
The drug mixture from the Phantom drink was clearly causing a strange behaviour in the elf like creature. Angelique exchanged a glance with her husband and touched his knee with the hand closes to him before she took Ditto from the table for a tour of the building. Approvingly the men watched their wives move off and began to speak amongst each other of more political things.
“Have you ever played chess?” Tarothin asked as he introduced the topic of tactics to the table.
“I have played only a few games” Isk responded truthfully.
“It is a precise game, Isk, you move your pieces along the board and wait for your opponent to create an opening. A good player knows the moves his opponent will make two or three steps in advance.”
The comment had Isk take a deep breath ‘Is it possible he knows we intended to drug him?’ at that thought a shiver ran its way up his arm to his gorget covered neck and jaw blending away in the coolness of the porcelain on his face. Remaining silent he continued to listen to Tarothin’s words.
“I’m playing a game, Isk. I have goals and plenty of pieces to achieve them”
Hanging in an awkward silence for just a moment and feeling his superior position at the head of the table wane to Tarothin’s hold over the conversation Isk sat up to give himself a height boost before reminding Tarothin of a certain mysterious box, once again lying to the man when he said “Lets hope for your sake a pawn from the opposite side of the board does not hold that sword, Tarothin” taking a sip of his drink, Isk felt the relaxed sensation of the Phantom mixture run down his throat. Angelique had given him a drop of it with his wine, how sweet of her.
Feeling relaxed almost immediately Isk threw in more words just before the wives came back to the table “If you want I can inform you about this special box if I find out more about it. I would hate to have such a powerful weapon out there in the hands of someone dangerous”
Fanning the paranoia Isk smiled under his mask as Tarothin nodded and moved to stand beside his wife who was now picking invisible lint from her clothes and the air around her.
Each pair exchanged appreciation for the company of the other and soon Isk and Angelique watched Tarothin and Ditto leave off into the distance.
“It works, my love” Angelique stated to him. “She was hallucinating.. Seeing phantom things”
“Tarothin does not even suspect that we know the truth about the box and with the lies I’ve told its unlikely that he ever will. Perhaps in a few days I will leave him a false rumour so that while his wife is seeing phantoms he is chasing them” |
