..He heard their whispers.
Their pointing. Their frightened expressions as he passed by.
Nikadius knew only that he was not human, but not what he was for certain. Nikadius made a pact with himself to find out what manner of creature he was, and where he came from. For his Father, Bailos, hadn't ever told him these things in the few short days they had spent together.
Nikadius wore a cowl over his face and a thick robe to hide his grotesque form, shambling along through the crouds of Luna, looking to the southern gate for comfort. He found that, as he exited the city, the crisp air of the morning excited him. He was eager for adventure.
His slow clumsy walk brought him first to the Marble Bridge, which he marveled at like a child would marvel at a magician's tricks. He walked upon the bridge with his odd, inhuman smile which was all he knew to do, and his eyes rested on the path ahead.
He saw a few dark tents ahead, raggedly dressed people gathered around a campfire turned their eyes to him, and pulled their weapons. Five of the people, maybe, began slowly walking towards Nikadius who then rid his face of his smile.
"No.. No not again.." said Nikadius in an almost anguished tone.
The humans approached.
"Give us ye money, rat!" said a man with a club.
Nikadius shook his head "I have none." his tone remained the same.
"Then we take ye bloody clothes instead! Kill 'im!" the man with the club.
About ten minutes later, Nikadius shambled slowly away from a pile of human bodies laid over the campfire surrounded by dark tents, onward in his journey, his bloodstained hands rested in his robe pockets.
He saw a large castle, and a smaller building near it. Nikadius went forward. He looked to the stable hitches infront of it, curious as to what they were. The place was empty. Nikadius went inside. Not even a barkeep greeted him, the workers carefully saw to the cleaning of the place. Nikadius was quite tired from his journey, he went into one of the back rooms and laid his awkward form upon it, drifting into sleep.
The whispers could not penetrate his dreams. |
