Rythane sat quietly on the edge of his bed, with the blue holy stone in both hands. Feeling like it was too much effort to wrench his gaze away, he remained in the same position for a few hours.
"Why do I do this to myself?" He asked aloud.
"I shouldn't let anyone get so close..."
The ghostly whispers of the stone seem to fill the room as it gives off its eerie blue glow. He then hears the ever so familiar voice in his head, deep and filled with serenity: "You know the time is coming..."
Rythane responds as if someone in the room were speaking. "I figured. What would you have me do?"
A few quiet moments pass by, and a reply comes: "As your friends needed you, mine will soon need me."
"My friends..." He thought. "Where were they now?" "Do they think of me?"
Clutching the stone in his right hand he raises from the bed and makes his way to the room below. Coming down the stairs he noticed fairly quickly a large figure leaning against the doorway to his home.

"You know, I can't blame you for what you did." Caleb said, while pushing himself off the wall and closing the door quietly.
Rythane reaches the bottom of the steps and shakes his head. "I know you would, however this is my burden to carry."
Caleb walks over to a large couch and plops himself down as if he owned the place, he then looks back to Rythane and responds: "Doesn't have to be, Ry. You've got some really close friends who would lay their life down for you in a heart beat." Caleb rubs his chin looking thoughtful. "Besides myself... I can think of someone who would do just about anything for you."
Rythane walks past the couch that Caleb occupies and goes to the large fireplace on the far end of the room. He then sits on the floor starring into the small flames. Without looking he responds: "I don't want her involved in this."
Caleb sits up a little and looks straight to him. "Too bad Rythane, It isn't up to you. You'd do better to remember that..." Sits quietly for a moment thinking he may have just over stepped his bounds a little. He then says: "I've seen the way that girl looks at you. Nothing you could say or do could stop her from doing what she wants to do."
Rythane continues to stare blankly into the flames. "How do you always seem to know what is in my mind, Caleb?"
Caleb chuckles slightly and leans back onto the couch. "You are not as mysterious as you may think, but aside from that, we share a common burden." Caleb reaches into a pouch on his side and draws his orange colored holy stone from it. "You must forget sometimes, I swear it."
Rythane snaps out of his trance and turns to the stone. "Why could I have not gotten that one?"
Caleb looks to him and lowers his head. "Ry, you're the only one strong enough to endure what yours has put you through."
Rythane turns back to the flames but this time lowers his head.
After a long period of silence between them, Rythane says: "I miss her." |

After meeting with the Countess of Ashencrosse, Rythane slowly made his way back to his home...
As he reaches the path south of the city, he stops and slowly looked both ways.
"The time is drawing near... I feel it." He thought to himself.
He then managed to walk across the path and continue on his way.
"Eclyse..." He said to himself as he came to a stop. He remained still a moment and continued on.
"Malidian... I knew this man, he had been a good friend to me in the stone guardians." He thought to himself.
After some time, Rythane reached his home and went into the main portion where not so long ago, Caleb and him, had their
conversation. He moves to the couch and sits slowly at the same time reaching for the Holy Stone. Drawing it from his being,
the eerie blue light dances silently on the walls. He looks down at it slowly.
"I never wanted any of this." He says while staring blankly. "This personal war within me, that I can never win."
The stone shimmers a little brighter as a voice rings in his head: "Incorrect. You have brought this upon yourself."
Rythane responds a loud, "You will give me the power I need."
The stone glows brightly a moment: "Always a price to pay." The stone then fades to its' normal glow.
Rythane sits quietly starring at the Stone with his eyes sharing the same eerie glow, "Vengeance." |
