After an impromptu meeting at the Keep that ended in Bloodshed, Talia rushed to meet with Xianna at the prison. “My sister, how does that little whelp fare?” Talia asked with a smirk on her face? Xianna rose from behind the desk from where she sat and approached her sister. “She fares as well as she was left by Trillin” Xianna replied.
Talia expanded on to explain the events that night. What struck a sour note with Xianna most was the fact that Bree’s mother was so afraid of the unknown that she would not even trade a signature for the little girl who waited, imprisoned below. Xianna felt that Ditto got what she deserved, and the treatment of the little girl would change. Xianna felt at that moment that Bree was treated no better than the humans treated the Atalan. Rage welled up inside Xianna. With eyes that glowed and a hurried step, she set out to the Maedas town center.
Xianna called upon Shenanigans, the Atalan tailor, to make a new set of clothes for Bree. Xianna sent other slaves to the market to get the foods, games, and books little girls would enjoy. Lastly, a carpenter was called upon to build a bed and expand the cell where Bree was held. Fireflies were hung, a bench installed. For a chamber of torture, the cell was divine.
Xianna approached Bree and woke her. Bree rubbed her eyes and commented first on the bed. “A bed?” she questioned. Xianna directed her to put on the clothes laid out upon the bed. At first Bree hesitated, but then put them on. The basket of food, toys, and books were presented which Bree again snubbed her nose at. The scents that wafted from within the basket must have worn down her stubborn side, because she eventually took that too.
“I have given you more space, come with me Bree.” Xianna said while opening the secret door. As the door opened, Bree’s eyes widened with a bit more delight. “This is all for me?” she exclaimed. “Yes, for you. You will be treated differently from this day forwards." With many buts and what if questions regarding her treatment, Xianna seemed to soothe those fears from Bree. Sitting down on the ornate bench built for Bree, Xianna motioned for the girl to sit beside her. “Sit and eat, I will tell you a story.”
Bree ate as Xianna began to tell her the story about the Atalan. They were interrupted when Bree asked about her gloves. “My gloves were taken by that mean man!” Xianna questioned why she wore the gloves and why she would hide scarred hands. After some probing, Bree admitted that the deep scars were done at her father's hand. The anger welled up inside Xianna, and her eyes glowed crimson. Humans were not only cruel to races outside their own; they also treated their children as horse dung on boots. Deplorable. A mother who didn’t find her child valuable enough to sacrifice herself, and a father who left permanent and hurtful marks upon sacred skin. Bree spoke softly, breaking Xianna of her internal rage.
“Finish the story please” Bree implored.
“Yes, the story…One day, kaane was brutally attacked.” Xianna begun again.
“Villagers?” Bree questioned
“Human barbarians…many atalan died” Xianna replied.
Frowning, Bree asked, “The perfect people?” “Yes, even perfection has flaws. Flaws make facets, and facets create beauty and perfection. Akin to a diamond.” Xianna replied to Bree. At the answer, Bree stopped eating and began to put things away. She stopped a moment and looked at Xianna.
“Can I see your face?” Bree asked. “No I'm sorry I cannot do that Bree.” Bree looks down but nods. Xianna lifted the girl's chin and allows her eyes to glow and winks at Bree, which promoted a small grin. Xianna stood from the bench and looked down to Bree, “Read the book in the basket. You can read can't you?” “Yes” Bree replied. Xianna told the girl to rest and read.
“Ok and Xianna, thank you” Bree said. “I want you to be safe Bree.” Xianna said.
With the moxie and spunk, Xianna came to found familiar with Bree, Bree began again with multiple questions, gunned all at once:
“Can I see the other man again, the mean one? I wanna see if he gonna beat me!”
Xianna, rolling crimson eyes, took a deep breath after the barrage of questions. “Bree…listen more, talk less.” Bree nods and hushes. “No one will hurt you again.” Xianna tells the girl again. Bree nodded quietly as Xianna turns and departs the cell. |
