On top of the the pack, is a brief letter folded in half.

Dear Songbird,

I have reconsidered the terms of your challenge, and decided to abide by your rules. Provided, of course, that you hand pick our spectators and keep it to a tasteful level of intimacy, as clamor and shouting will inhibit the quality of performance should said stipulations be met after our contest.

I trust you will find this satisfactory, and suspect that you held high hopes that my resolve would erode over a night's worth of reflection.

In any event, my knees and I await your reply.

Yours,
Arahim

Within the package is a single, shiny fork inlaid with gold filigree.

Cezanne twirled the fork idly in her hand, laughing as she read the letter. “Splendid!”

Aurelia looked up from her desk, seemingly perplexed by the fork, her gaze shifting from Cezanne to the letter and back again. “What’s splendid?”

“Another joust!” Cezanne exclaimed enthusiastically.

A faint smile played across the Countess’ lips, uncertain as she was of the sincerity of Cezanne’s proclamation. “Really? And what’s that?” She nodded toward the fork.

Cezanne grinned broadly and held it up with a flourish. “My lance!”

Laughter burst unexpectedly from Aurelia’s lips. “You’ll put someone’s eye out, Ceza.”

Cezanne gave a slight pout, still holding up the fork hopefully. “That’s just what Ara said…”

A small brown paper parcel with carefully inked and vining designs sits on Arahim’s dinner table. Small, flour-dusted kitten prints lead up to the parcel and away again, pausing at the edge of the table where below on the floor rests the letter that had been left carefully atop the parcel, until Althea decided to rearrange the offering.

The letter reads as follows:

Dearest Ara,

I’m glad you reconsidered your stand on my challenge, as I refuse to be denied the opportunity that the others were given freely with their challenges. First, however, we will need to meet and discuss terms. Perhaps over dinner tonight, here at this very table? As like deserves like, I have provided you with the weapon that you will need to conquer my newest creation – summer peach and cherry pie.

Don’t try to run. I know where you live. So does Althea.

Fondly,
Cezanne

P.S. – Don’t try to use this weapon in our challenge. I would wind up on top without a doubt.

Nestled inside the brown paper package is a wooden fork, intricately carved with vining moonflowers and morning glories entwined.

Dear Songbird,

I had thought those peaches and cherries were to be used in two seperate, but delicious summer ales we were to begin brewing. I cannot believe that my painstaking fruit pickings were delegated (most slyly) to pie baking!

Unfortunately I cannot make dinner this night, nor any night for the next week or so. As is my curse, I have packed hastily, and must be away for a short while. Tho' I have a destination in mind, it is settled in the wilds, and there is never any way to know what else may befall me.

But such is travelling. Always.

Please forgive the abrupt departure, and see if you cannot manage to save whatever pie you may for my return.

Yours,
Arahim
