|
A hastily-written note is left at the theater for Aurelia. It bears the following message, written in black ink in simple but legible script.
Goodbye. It may be for good, but if I succeed, I will return if I am still able. I'm not sure why I feel the need to seek her out—whether it is that I simply care for her, that I feel a duty to Ashencrosse, or that I simply do not want things to change any more than they already have. The reason matters little. I have made this my goal and I will not falter in achieving it.
I will not return to Ashencrosse until she is found—alive or dead. If she does not wish to be return when I have found her, I will honor her wishes insofar as I feel they are genuine. I will, of course, remain in contact with you. Reach me at the Sweet Dreams Inn in Britain with information, or if she returns. I will send whatever contacts I make along to you. You may relay their information to me and to the trackers you've dispatched.
If I do not return, know that it is not because I did not desire to. I thank you for the hospitality and friendship you and your fellows have shown in the past months. Please, look after Cezanne and ensure that she, too, knows where I have gone, and that she is as happy as she will allow herself to be. Additionally, see to it that Corvus continues to endures at least one taunt per day on my behalf. I would not want him to become complacent in my absence.
Yours in friendship,

A fool's errand, she thought as she read the letter through for a second time. Eclyse won't be found unless she wants t' be. I wish ye could understand. I know 'er all too well.
Aurelia lifted a clean sheet of parchment from her desk drawer and dipped a white plumed quill in the inkwell. She paused a moment to think, hoping to carefully word her response.
Dear Rosar,
Your dedication to this task weighs heavily upon my heart, and I wish ye the best in it. I do hope, for your sake, that the quest brings you the resolution you seem to desire. I still firmly believe that Eclyse is safe and sound, wherever she's chosen to go. I've known her all my life, and I cannot fathom her wandering into a situation for which she is unprepared.
Three gypsies from our camp have heard your request and acted upon it, leaving out to employ their skills in tracking. However, if Eclyse has erased her trail thoroughly, there will be no finding her, despite all efforts. Ye must be prepared for the eventuality that, sometimes, a lass just doesn't want to be found. I hope, if that proves to be the case, you are willing to accept the inevitable, and carry on with other endeavours.
Until next we speak, may the Virtues guide ye.
Yours Humbly,
Aurelia Bretane
She folded the letter and sealed it with bronze-coloured wax, imprinting it with a stamped cross. Then she walked the letter back to the camp, catching a gypsy tracker as he prepared to depart for Britain. "If ye please, Agostino, could ye drop this at th' Sweet Dreams Inn, as ye pass through?" |
