Cuthbert's horse galloped hard around the side of the mountain, the sound of the hoofbeats muffled by the snow.

The sound he could still hear quite clearly, however, was his own heart beating fast and hard. The noise filled his ears, his head. He felt numb, nervous.

This is ridiculous... he thought. How many battles had he been in? How many rallies? How often had he defended the name of Humanis? of Magincia? Was he nervous at those times? No. Yet here he was, on his way to the house of the woman he had met a few weeks ago, with his heart pounding and his hands shaking. You're pathetic.

Slowing his horse and dismounting he slowly ascended the steps to her home and knocked. She answered the door with a smile, her blond hair in braids that brushed her shoulders.

Inviting him in, she showed him around her home, which she shared with her sister and was still in the process of decorating. They passed the time with idle chatter, Cuth allowing her to show him from room to room, his heart racing all the while. When they stepped onto the roof deck she began to talk happily about gardening and how much she was enjoying growing her plants. Cuth nodded here and there and tried to interject intelligent comments, hoping to mask the fact that he had absolutely no clue about gardening whatsoever. Every once in awhile there would be an awkward pause in the conversation, and he would think Now. Say it now... but his tongue would never obey.

At the end of their visit, as Cuth readied himself to leave, she ended up surprising him.

"I have something for you..." she said with a shy smile

"Oh? What might that be?" He tried to keep his voice steady.

Opening a chest nearby she withdrew a red card and handed it to him with a smile. He managed to stammer a "Th-thank you, it's... it's lovely" before re-mounting and riding off.

Arriving back at his own house he placed the card on his front table so that it would be in his line of sight every day when he came home.

"Happy Valentine's Day, Lord Cuthbert. Signed, Bella"
