Cuthbert sat at the desk in his office reading over the Report that Lieutenant Ari had written. He had read it three times and actually heard the words out of her own mouth, but somehow felt compelled to read it again. Traitors to Magincia? In our own ranks? It just didn't seem real. Perhaps that was why he kept reading the report - maybe he was trying to solidify the fact that this was REAL. This was happening. Or, more appropriately, HAD happened.

Three Magincians. Consorting with a Drow. Aiding him. Helping him in a quest that would ultimately rebuild a Drow Army? And one of these Magincians was a high-ranking Military official, no less? Cuth shook his head as if to clear it, but the knowledge was still there. Traitors.

The next steps would need to be taken with great care. He, Isk and Joanna would determine what had happened and what should be done about it. Cooler heads needed to prevail.

Just hope I can cool my own head....

Cuthbert sneered as he sat in front of the warm fire in his home, reading the letter sent to him by Lars.

Not for a second... he thought, his face contorted in anger. Not for a SECOND do I believe this note. Three Magincians have taken it upon themselves to go "on a mission"? And one of them my own Lieutenant, and yet I heard nothing prior to this? LIES!!! We will not be manipulated by this... I will see to that.

Balling up the note, Cuthbert tosses it into the blaze that was warming him.

Nobody shall know of this ridiculous attempt to fool me. Not Isk, not Joanna, not anyone. We shall go ahead with these traitors as planned...

One by one.

One by one they were called into the room.

One by one they were grilled by the Magnate as Cuthbert and Joanna stood on either side of him, stoic in expression.

One by one they were dismissed, and the Magnate would turn to Cuth and call out the name of the next person to be interrogated.

Cuth would descend to the first floor of the Basilica and call out that name, bringing each and every member of the Republic up to face the assembled Tribunal. One by one.

It was a long process, and an exhausting one, ultimately culminating in two Magincians being forced to sit directly across from each other at the large table in the Basilica. They were told that their compatriot (the third member involved is this most curious act) had already been found guilty of insubordination and treason, and had been exiled from the island. They were told to lock eyes on each other, to never deviate in their gaze, even when answering the Magnate's questions.

In the end, when Isk was satisfied with the results of the final interrogation, he decided on mercy, allowing them to stay. "We encourage them to be proactive..." Isk had said to him "but have not set firm enough boundaries". Cuth considered this statement for a moment and decided that he believed it to be true. Perhaps this event was a reason not only to look closer at the members of the Republic, but also how that Republic was governed.

All part of the growing pains of a Nation - and this Nation was growing rapidly indeed.
