I have always done this, and I most respectfully request that others do so as well...

If you copy poetry, prose, or lyrics and use them in your work, please give the author, the poet, the songwriter his or her due.
It's just a matter of simple respect, but it's a major thing for me. They toiled to create it, no matter how long ago....

Sometimes their words really capture your idea or feeling, and it's beautiful to use their creations, and allow us all to share them. It's the very least we can do to include just a little note giving them the credit for their work.

If we, as a reader, find and take joy in what you post, it could open our eyes to a whole new world, and a new writer to explore.

Thanks for indulging me, and have a beautiful day! Smile

Actually, I would love to see this in regards to the "borrowed" artwork I see in signatures and avatars. Artists bust their butts to put their ideas to graphic. Most of them have no other employment and don't see near enough in royalties. With the internet being so free-sourced, it is impossible to prevent people lifting graphics. So throwing up some credit where it's due is a nice thing. It also helps spread the love and earn the original creator a fan base.

Sometimes when I see some art, I want to know who did it, so I can check their gallery.

Aside, were you actually asking about someone specific or were you asking in general?

*nods* I suppose the difference in the Avatars/Sigs is we're all aware the pics are not our own in many cases. In written posts there is little way to know the words are borrowed unless noted. I am a published magazine author with several articles to my credit and, while I wouldn't mind if what I've written is used elsewhere, I would be hopeful that should they be, whoever honoured me by copying them would acknowledge them as mine.

I readily admit to everyone that I'm totally artistically challenged when it comes to artwork. If I ever borrow artwork for a signature and can find the original artist of it, I will be glad to give them credit for it. The problem I have trying to do that is that is that I used to have a friend who did all my artwork and he didn't want his name used, so I just told everyone it was "a friend" - Now the artwork I use in my signatures is all stuff I've found on obscure flicker or photobucket albums with no artist's name or credit given.

Answer to your aside - It's a general request. There are obviously several people here who do borrow lyrics and poetry, and that's fine. It was just somethin' I wanted to suggest, because I didn't know if the thought had even really crossed their minds. Smile

I wish I had a way to find out for sure who the artists were for artwork I use in my sigs, but I've come up with nothing in searching. The signatures are created by myself, but the artwork isn't mine. If they were MY artwork, you'd still be looking at it trying to figure out if Eclyse was a knight or a doggy. Very Happy

Plagiarism is a crime. You could definitely get someone in trouble for taking published work.

I would have to say, though, that I have seen more art "borrowed" than written work. I know it happens, but I don't frequent many editorial or fiction-based websites to witness it.

It gets a bit ridiculous to me, to see the same art being used over and over. I hate the cookie cutter effect. The same pictures of the same *insert drow, elf, barbarian, wizard, etc* mutated in a variety of fashions - stretched, cropped, black and white, magnified, flipped and so on and so forth.

This is one reason I started selling my art. So people know that the character in their signature is THEIR character, and not really just a Sephiroth or Cloud or Drizzt with different hair or eye color. I will spend a while going over a character description over and over with someone to get it right, and I absolutely love hearing the words "That's exactly how I imagined her/him!". Sense of pride there every time. It also adds a personalized touch, in my opinion, and some people dig that as much as I do. Then again, I am a cantankerous artist. I am proud that the images I use are 95% of the time my own. Although I can't resist Tek tek avatars sometimes, such an adorable site (which I have linked to a few times on this forum).

But again, in the end, people rarely tell where it came from.. be it Salvatore's drow book art, whatever romance novel cover, whatever movie poster, gift card website, or what have you. I like to view what other artists do, perhaps to draw inspiration or compare techniques or sometimes just a friggin break or relief from staring at my own view point for a while.

I think we got off topic here, I think the point was plagiarized writing, and I agree, its awful, and it happens right here on a board that is somewhat cloistered.

It makes no sence.

Stolen is stolen. I think the same applies to both, so it is still on topic and makes sense to me.

I was actually enjoying this discussion.

Though some might disagree with me, but I know I've not cited someone's work ( Be it art, music, writting) being purely accidental. I don't MEAN to not give credit (take that double negative) just sometimes I forget.

Let us not forget, we are human and definately prone to errors.

not being a stickler about this, just curious.
Did you create the art for your sig and avatar?
I'm all about giving credit where credit it due.

Unsure if you're talking to me or someone else, but if it's me, feel free to re-read the rest of the thread, as that question's been hashed and rehashed. Razz

Yes it was directed at you. Good call as well i did not read the rest of the thread. I'm just afraid I will have to decline. I'm not a fan of copyright at all.
I'm just not big on the great assembly hall being full of
http://www.atlanticcommunityboard.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=26967 either.
I dont know. I guess I just dont use other peoples work enough to care.
I'll use some rolling stones material later and give them credit and see how that makes me feel.
