"Where've you been? I thought you would be here when I returned," Scar inquired as he sat at table finishing a supper of roasted mutton. "I cooked dinner," he added with a wink.
Kayla, a strict vegetarian, turned up her nose, smiled, and shook her head. "You go ahead." She sat down across from him. "I went to see my cousin, Duchess Molly Kaldhel. I told her about you."
Scar continued eating. "So what did she say?"
Kayla placed her elbows on the table propping up her head in her cupped hands. "She said get rid of him, he will be a terrible drain on your finances and larder."
Scar nodded in agreement. "True enough."
"She thinks she knows you. I showed her the picture I drew. She said she knows someone who has experience with your... problem. I think she called him a Wolf King, whatever that is."
"Wolf King?" Scar repeated. He set down his knife and fork. "That sounds very familiar. Did he have any other name?" He looked intently at her.
"I don't know... she never gave one. She plans to show the picture to him."
Scar rose from the table, wiping his mouth. He stepped toward the fireplace and stood gazing into its crackling flames.
"What's wrong?"
Scar put an arm up and leaned against the hearth. "I... I should know that person," he stammered. "Wolf King..."
Kayla got up and went to him. "Perhaps this is a good sign that your memory is returning."
"Myrddin! Myrddin!!"
"What is that?"
"His name... the Wolf King's name is Myrddin ab'Arawn. I can see him in my mind's eye... Yes... yes! I remember it!"
Kayla stroked his long black hair, but inside she was becoming anxious, and a little worried. Scar turned towards her and clasped her head in his hands, gently. He leaned over and kissed her softly, but passionately. At length he pulled away. "Thank you! I think you may have saved me," he said, smiling.
She fell back into his arms, not wanting him to see the sadness in her eyes. |
