Leaning her forehead on the rocky cavern wall, Jaana heaved an irritated sigh. She almost tripped over an empty bottle of White Thunder, and there were already a few scattered about the cave's floor. The mere thought of being stuck in one spot for over a day, let alone two, frustrated her quite thoroughly. She had never been one to stay in one place long.
"Watch the cave while I take forever to find information on how to heal Ramoth's wing so hooligans don't destroy my home while I'm away!" she imitated in a high-pitched and purposely mocking voice, hitting her head on the wall.
Sliding down into a sitting position, she pulled her robe over her head and tossed it aside. Against her back clung some sort of transparent, material. Pulling her boots off and standing up, she closed her eyes, concentrating on the magical forces that practically radiated from Ilshenar grounds.
The 'material' against her back separated and spread out about three arms' width on each side, fluttering slightly. Large dragonfly-like wings with a strange dark glowing mosaic pattern twitched slightly, though Jaana couldn't will them to do much else.
"I thought that I gave up so little for so much," she muttered to herself. A pale furred but not quite white horse nearby looked up, watching curiously. Jaana looked back and forced a smile. "Pointed ears don't mean I understand ye. But don't worry about me."
She looked up, staring at the dark rocks above her. An armored swamp dragon, the reason she was staying in the cave in the first place, chewed noisily on a dead deer she had dragged in for it. Jaana's brow twitched in irritation, then she lowered her head to stare at the ground.
"Why, oh why, do I even bother helping?" she muttered to herself. The horse nudged her cheek and nickered lightly. Jaana looked up and forced a smile. "Oh, you've no right to call me the 'hero', Miss I-Run-Around-Stomping-Vampire-Bats-When-You-Stalk-Around-The-Hostel-To-Ambush-Ivae'."
The horse snorted, immediately recognizing the familiar sarcasm in her voice, and trotted over to the small nearby lake for a drink. Jaana smirked watching her, betting in her mind that it was the same water Helvictus, a necromancer friend of her 'mentor', was under arrest for selling. What a small world.
"Well, Jenna.. We're not going to be getting any welcome guests during this stay as far as I know.. Unless Ivae decides to drop by alone." After a pause, she added, "Did I mention that Sej.. Bah.. Already forget his name. Sejeran or something strange like that.. Anyway, that's one of the unwelcome guests that might drop by."
Jenna didn't seem to hear her guardian rambling in the background, happily drinking away at the lake's refreshing water. Jaana cursed rather loudly in response to Jenna's lack of response and slumped against the wall.
Looking to Ramoth, she sighed. "I'm staying here for you, Ramoth. She'll be back with a solution soon.." Under her breath she hissed, "She'd better be, anyway, else hooligans will be the least of her worries."
Yet again looking to the ceiling as if seeking an answer from it, she grabbed one of the bottles of White Thunder scattered about the ground and popped the cap off. "Funny how chaotic a ripped wing can be.."
Her mentor had only left a few hours ago to research and already Jaana felt like her dreaded stay in the place her mentor called a home had already dragged on much too long. _________________ "Forrest, a woman of many words.. Though most of them result in saying, 'You're wrong!'" |
