The wolf looks hurried as if he was hastened to her side at once.

Fiona,

Grave knews hits my ears, I seek confirmation in the issue of the cancellation of your marriage to Kaylor. With this news I shall as your relative, and as no such male relative of the family d'Rue lives I shall take it upon my own shoulders to avenge this wrong done unto you. The only way I know how. Kaylor is a member of this clan and so I shall according to Stonegate laws seek to rectify this wrong as is dictated.

I assure you all will be done with utmost fairness and I shall approach our king. It will be private, he shall pay his dues for the wrongs upon your innocent and loving heart. Yet first I must have your permission.

Your Cousin,
Merci d'Rue
Oracle of Stonegate

As Fiona read the letter, her melancholy faded. It was quickly replaced with righteous indignation.

Merci,

You heard correctly. Kaylor unceremoniously broke off our engagement shortly after having proposed. He cited religious reasons but, since he obviously cannot be trusted, I wonder if he is lying about that too.

I detest admitting this but I do not believe I am in the right frame of mind to exact revenge for his betrayal. I feel my continued love for him may cause me to falter at a crucial moment. Therefore, I would be honored to have you avenge me.

~ Fiona

Reading Merci's response, Fiona smiled for the first time since Kaylor had broken her heart.
