Keep in mind also, as a GM of a guild you are not only responsible for the actions of your recruits in relation to your own members but you are also responsible for their actions in relation to any guild you are allied or warred to.

If OES recruits one of these asshats and it leads to item loss for an OESer or any other community member, I feel I can speak for all of OES when I say we will step up and reimburse any losses. If you are in this guild Poo and have alternates in the community I still say you are a piece of crap. You know what SOME members of the Poo guild do and yet feel it's a good idea to associate with those people? If you want to be a part of a thieves guild that's fine, but leave the scamming/guild stealing/guild pking to someone else.

Why should members of the ARPC have to constantly be worried about going AFK in a city because some dbag wants to get his rocks off? If you are in the ARPC and are a part of the Poo guild I urge you to form your own thieves guild which sticks to game mechanics rather then scamming and griefing.

^^
What he said goes the same for me.

Poo is a crappy name for a guild, anyway. Rolling Eyes

Comparatively speaking in regards to UO today versus what it was say in 2001 - I am surprised that people still do this kind of stuff.....

Beleth said plenty that I agree with, namely that you're an emissary (assuming you have some pull in the guild) and you think this sort of behavior is dandy and have no problem associating with it and defending it. It's your game time, far be it from any of us to dictate how you use it.

That aside, Vidish shouldn't be lynched over this. He was under no obligation at all to come forward and talk about his experiences in Poo, let alone reveal any inner machinations of the guild.

Do you want to circumvent this? I mean, really? It's simple: Adopt a set of recruitment standards. I can't even count how many RP guilds I've seen over the years who just recruit people on the spot that they barely know, it's something I still see to this day. OES has an application process, and even just getting accepted isn't a guarantee that you're in the guild. The only time guild thieves/PKs has ever been a problem for OES has been when someone was leaving on bad terms (a rarity), and 99% of the time we catch it before hand.

Yeah, I know. Having a set of standards for recruits will mean you'd have to say goodbye to zerg squads and a means to boost land claims, but that's how it works.

Take responsibility for your guilds and things like this won't be a problem.

It's a miracle I'm in OES at all. OH NO SHE WAS IN S|S AND LBC AND ASSOCIATES WITH SCUM. I fell out of the scene after AoS came out, but before then I was everything all of you hate. After pub 16, I turned entirely to griefing because they ruined dungeon thieving. And holy crap, I know Shinobi and have complemented him on some of his brilliant schemes. Way back, thieves would target tamers as being loot pinatas, with RPers as a close second. And you know why RPers get griefed? Because you got nice things and you QQ hard. If you're going to piss all over Vidish, piss on me too.

I lost all my old episodes, Crazyjoe's site is down, so it looks like the only thing I can link to is Belan's old stuff.. This is being an ass hole with style and is what it's all about. Getting nice things from stupid players. What Vidish said about guild chat is entirely true, and honestly all of you who are shocked by it are the same people who bitch in guild chat making fun of bad RPers. Get over yourselves, you're no different. The attitude between elitist RPers and thieves is really not that different at all.

I'm not shocked. I also didn't piss on Vidish. I don't have anything against him at all. D'thal was absolutely correct in his post about him not having to come forward at all.

But I have already pissed on you before for this, Kael, you know that. I am sorry if you think I'm being a crybaby because I feel it is wrong to scam the unsuspecting, or as you put it, "Getting nice things from stupid players." None of what you said in your post justifies robbing people. In fact, you yourself are one of those elitists "who wench in guild chat making fun of bad RPers".

Nothing you can say will ever justify robbing people to get off.

I .. really .. don't think this needs to turn into another argument over whether thieving is okay or not. I think we can all agree we don't want people in the community who will steal from us, so just being selective about who we trust is the best we can do. Especially with us in Bmarsh.. being in Fel.. We really can't even give people who seem interested a tour of the town without being weary. Make sure your rubbish insured and your containers are locked, I guess. I dunno why RPers are a target. Maybe we are too trusting?

yeah i'm with Edda on this one, Kael, you need to chill the frack out. no one is crying here but you now...
seriously, relax.
I spent my morning killing blues and smashing face for silver on my island. you don't need to lecture anyone about what it means to affect another player in game.
Almost all of us steal and pvp.

Unless you have a really good reason Someone shouldn't even give a heads up when a guild who has joined ARPC guilds only to screw them over on more than one occasion is rolling around...
you should take a nap.

Point of my post, A infiltrator may be joining ranks soon, recruit responsibly.
All other posts, irrelevant crying about how stealing is a legit skill?

Next thing you know UBB stone will be on a vendor for 100 mil again and well all just be crying about it.

Lock my thread please.

I traded a blind kid my parrot, Petey, with a broken neck once. For money.

Caer: Thanks for the heads up.

Vidish: Thanks for the frank explaination. The insight is very appreciated.

Beleth: I'm with you.

Fel Mindset in Fel, using the Fel rules: Perfectly acceptable

Scamming people to get around the Tram ruleset: Not acceptable.

Kael: I've read Belan the Looter. Most of what Belan did was well within the rules. Joining a guild with the express purpose of killing and stealing from them? Not cool. You play WoW. If somone joined your boyfriend's guild, cleared out the guildbank and and ninja'd a bunch of drops from a raid, are you saying he'd have no right to be upset because they were stupid and whoever did it should be applauded for being so clever? Maybe, I'm wrong, but I seriously doubt you'd be ok with it.

My point is, yes people shouldn't be dumb, because someone will take advantage of it, but that doesn't mean the people taking advantage of others are ok for doing it in the first place. There are concequences for actions. In a social setting like a MMO, we expect people to give the same common courtesy back that we give them. RPers are by thier nature more social, and more trusting, because we want to draw people in. Antisocial jerks tend to be shunned. It's not a matter of being shocked, it's a matter of dealing with enough assholes in the real world, that we as a community shouldn't have to deal with them in the game world.

The fact you see that as a justification saddens me.

The easiest way to smite a scammer is to be smarter than the scammer.

I think I was scammed once, in 2000, when I bought a Black Dye Tub in a bag. It was a regular dye tub with black clothing ingeniously positioned over it to make it look real. I'm sure Kaelthir remembers the scam. I've not been scammed since because I've made it a point to be aware of the scams before they hit me. As far as guild killers and looters, I was always in OES and never had to worry about that. We had an alternate stone for new recruits in the Caina days and today we have an applicant and monitored period.

GMs: Don't let people into your guild indiscriminately. Players: Insure your stuff. Lock your house. Take preventative measures.

What more needs to be said? Really? There will always be people maligned to take advantage of people who just don't know any better. It happens in real life, it happens in every MMORPG, and it will continue to happen as long as profit comes from it.

Edit: Also, to those trying to argue the validity and merit of the scamming/thieving profession, I really don't think a board full of honest role-players is where you want to make your point. We don't care why you think its okay. We don't care why you justify it. We really don't care. This is a community of role-players, not thieves. We are here for fun, not to take advantage of others.

I'm not sure if my post came out wrong but I wasnt trying to validate or make excuses. Whether or not it came out, most of my intent was to tell you that RPers arent really targeted, and to bring out some prevention stuff.
The checking for insurance, locking down, and being careful who you let around you.

Oh, and by the way for whoever it was with the "piss on vidish" type statement. I'd suggest you spend less time pissing on me and more time checking your pack. At any given tavern night there are numerous potential thieves in your pack. Any green or orange could do a little soulstone magic and be checking everyones pack. They wouldnt even have to make a habit out of it. They may be a crate thief who's bored or irritated with the group.

Actually... I may do that myself just to show the groups I'm green to how it works and how easy it is.

No one pissed on you.

I think it quite ironic that now I've been hacked on both accounts. Totally robbed of my best gear. A couple inquis, a couple ornies, armor of fortune.. the list goes on.

Right.. it's just pixels. Evil or Very Mad
