I wanted to share this with y'all, because I couldn’t be prouder of my son at this moment.

For a few years my son Raistlin has been working summers at Growing Power (www.growingpower.org) , as part of their Youth Corps.

Taken from their website:

Growing Power transforms communities by supporting people from diverse backgrounds and the environments in which they live through the development of Community Food Systems. These systems provide high-quality, safe, healthy, affordable food for all residents in the community. Growing Power develops Community Food Centers, as a key component of Community Food Systems, through training, active demonstration, outreach, and technical assistance.

Growing Power and the work that they do are being recognized by Michelle Obama. So next week my son is flying out to Washington DC with Will Allen the CEO of Growing Power, Karen Parker, the Milwaukee Director, and a handful of other kids from the Growing Power Youth Corps, to have lunch with the first lady, and talk about what they do, how and why they do it.

My son Ray has been in the Youth Corps for 4 years now. In an organization that has hundreds of kids go through it, we were one of the very first families contacted. Ray may like to goof off as much as the next kid, but when he gets to the farm, he’s all business, and takes the job and the work he does very seriously. He knows more about composting, plant cycling, crop rotation and organic farming than I ever imagined an 11 year old to know. When Solanaceae (my RL wife) spoke with Karen, Karen said to her “I couldn’t imagine a more deserving kid to earn this trip.”

As a supporter of the organic food movement, I’m excited, but as a father I couldn’t be more proud.

Congrats.
I loved my trips to DC. The White house has a lot of awesome history.
One Word of Caution! DO NOT SKIP ROCKS IN THE REFLECTING POOL.
Had a policeman tell me that's a 20k fine if he caught me doing it again. Very Happy

That is really cool. Sustainability and recycling are huge issues, it's wonderful that he's getting this kind of opportunity.
