I have a couple questions that maybe someone can help me with. I have two characters that I'm looking to get a little input on.

One is an elf, and although there's a bit of elven lore provided with the game, I'm assuming the players themselves have furthered this to some extent in the years since elves were made available. I was wondering if anyone could perhaps give me some pointers so I could write up a short backstory for the chr. Basically, how integrated are they in society and what might one's motivation be to leave Heartwood to live amongst humans, gargoyles, orcs, etc.

My other chr is a necromancer, who I'll probably start off as an ARPC Individual. Is there anything the chr should or would know about the current state of necromancy in the realm? I'm sure I can find out plenty from just interacting with other necromancers and their ilk, but I'm concerned that there may be things about the craft that would be common knowledge to a apprentice necromancer that I may overlook in casual conversation.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. It could either be posted here or I could speak to someone on ICQ if they prefer.

Thanks again.

Here is the extent of UO official lore in game:

Mondain's Legacy Info

UO's elves have a lot in common with basic fantasy elves, being tied to plants and nature. The expansion itself brought the Spellweaving skill, which can only be taught in Heartwood, the elven tree city. It says there that the elves were cut off during the Shattering. Obviously, we've had elves in game IC before, during, and since, that have been unrelated to Heartwood. EA has graciously seen fit not to supply too much information about the elves they introduced (be it either from lack of effort or courtesy to roleplayers). They were present in some of the old Ultima series, but stopped being a playable race after the first few games. This gives players a bit of freedom in their RP. Over the years, the elves we've seen have mostly been based on Tolkien lore and the TSR drow.

My character's motivation to leave Heartwood (as she is 100% elf!) was that she only went in to study in the first place. She never truly lived there, having been in Sosaria prior to the opening of the door to Heartwood. Sylindrii comes from another place, much the way some humans come from Earth. Our guild, The Tel'dorei, literally translates to "Children of the Earth". In this case, the word earth refers to soil and not the world. We are dedicated to the land and nature, and keeping the natural balance. The theme of the guild is a good blend of various different elven lores, and is accepting of anyone closely tied to nature. If you want to know more about us, I will be happy to tell you!

Can't wait to see you in game!

As far as necromancy goes, it's all in how you roleplay it. Some think Necromancy is the end-all be-all of evil, and others view it as just another form of magic. Using it doesn't make you "evil."

With all magics, however, it is generally accepted that there are the spells in the spellbook, and then a much deeper level of spells used in rituals. The latter is all used in roleplay. Hit me up on ICQ with you got more questions pertaining to Necro!

*Shamless self promotion, knows everyone will find a way to cope with it*

Necromancy has a pretty rich history in the ARPC, it's been employed as an RP tool since long before the skill became available in the Age of Shadows expansion. The two most notorious guilds that put the Necromancy theme in the spotlight were the Order of the Ebon Skull and the Cult of Infernal Necromancy.

Both of the above guilds, OES in particular, bumped up Necromancy to be an integral part of the religious aspect of their roleplay. In a lot of traditional RP settings, Necromancy is considered more of a science (much like most other schools of magic) than a spirituality.

In OES today, we "unofficially" have two types of Necromancers:

Necromancers: I'll give you a moment to "duh" at me, then we'll continue. These are usually necro-mages, following in the tradition of classic OES. Though they may (or sometimes, may not) have the Necromancy skill, their Roleplay of Necromantic Rituals preserved since the first incarnation of OES is what defines their necromancy, not the 17 spells they're limited to.

"AOSmancers": Typically, those with the Necromancy skill that aren't roleplayed Necromancers. You'll usually find these amongst the Death Knights and the lesser undead, excuse being they're touched by the black arts, though by no means accomplished Necromancers.

As far as apprentice Necromancers go, ignorance is the route that's usually the most fun. You might know a few stories and legends about the Order of the Ebon Skull and the Cult of Infernal Necromancy. Some of the best necromancer RP I've had involved the Master/Apprentice Necromancer relationship.
