Worked at Petco for a bit back in college, Malacite. And yes. Tank smelled horrendous (cleaned or not), the little bastids were often bitey (with mouths full of pathogenic bacteria I might add... don't get bit), there was a constant collection of sludge along most of the water intakes and the purifier itself was rated for a 100 gallon tank (even though the tank itself was only 60 gallons or so in size) and the filter still required excessive amounts of cleaning and replacement. We mostly sold Red-Eared Sliders, with the occasional green head.

They are second only to hamsters in terms of "pets" I despise to care for.

Which is strange as their near cousins, the tortoises are some of the easiest (take 'em out and put them anywhere as they don't go anywhere fast, throw out substrate, dump in new substrate, add water and food dishes again, BAM, done. Tortoise has moved maybe 4 inches) to maintain and fun to have around.

So, to sum up, you got screwed.

My turtle used to hiss at me..

My kids want a tortoise really bad. I have to peel them away from the tank when we go to the pet store :/

I got a (dunno how to spell this...) syphening device that was ultimately a waste of $40. I had the little wee turtles when I was a kid too, but they are hard to find anymore since they are mostly illegal to own. *grumble grumble*

Your talking about the little plain green water turtles? where do you live. I can get you all of them you ever wanted?

I didn't know that.
The things that happen on a thread that starts with a rant about cleaning a pet's tank.

How about I just send you mine and you release them? Razz

Thank you Grig! Good to know that there are others out there that see these turtles for what they really are. I am going to have to drive close to an hour to get them the turtle feed that they like. Apparently, the stuff I got from the local pet store isn't up to snuff. *plans for turtle soup this week*

Turtles were really messy, used to have a few. But the filthiest creature I've ever had was an Iguana. Needed to clean his pen once a week and bathed him at least every other day.

I want a water monitor to put in the backyard to handle the pest problem though. :/
