I love this idea, especially as a fellow fan of the show that inspired it.

I think it would be a fun event for everyone, and personally if I could train up a gladiator just for this I would. That would be super interesting RP.

I also really like the ideas of facing monsters in the arena occasionally. You could even have the newer gladiators have to prove themselves against monsters in little fights before the big main event fight on the gladiator nights.

This actually sounds fun as hell. Moonglow would definitely participate and I would always have new gladiators if that were the rule. Problem is mages no matter what would probably die because the way new UO is, if your a mage without dci or a spell channeling shield or wrestle specials then your going to get eaten.

Otherwise it's an awesome idea and i'll be glad to help host this.

Wasn't really aiming towards mages Razz

Joseph ,
Isn't moonglow like the mage capitol or something like that ? ( Not a mage wouldn't know Smile )
Anyways, why not start an arcane tournament like the gladiator one. Be easy enough and rp'ly it would be a cool set up. Have mages from all around Sosaria come in and compete for status. (Don't all mages like status!) Use same rules, gm leather and robes. Set the combatants 10 paces apart and keep them in a 4x4 box and have at it.

The Gladiator thing sounds cool as hell. Be almost worth making another Niall McStravick Confused

I would like to see a permanent arena at some location. Honestly can't see a good guild running this sort of thing given the violence inherent in the traditional arenas. On the same note, I think most of who would "watch" and "participate" in this would be more evil. Most "good" guilds I think who witnessed a true gladiator arena would consider the sport absolutely brutal, cruel and probably get pissed as "slaves" were brought in.

In my opinion, saying that someone couldn't participate anymore if they get killed (or knocked "unconscious" or "injured to the point they can no longer continue") is going to be way too troubling for most folks who actually might be interested. Unless the guild who had the arena ran it themselves almost completely as far as participants.

I suggest an alternative.

A gladiator starts naked essentially with a crude (NPC) weapon... BRAND NEW CHARACTER (make a list of acceptable skills they can choose from - no adv, token) As they win fights, they get points and can essentially 'buy' equipment, items like a bola etc at a store. It should be a very slow process and the items should be expensive. Points are based on the level of their opponent. If they somehow defeat a man who is on horseback and they are not, they'd get more points than say they defeated someone who was equipped equally to them. It will come down to true tactics on what they choose with their opponents... do they choose armor, a better weapon, bandages, a bola, etc. Since they have no idea who their opponents will be the next time, it will a bit of luck and a lot of thinking what best fits them. All items they get with their points must be carried at all times.

The gladiators do not leave the arena to "train", hunt etc. They are stuck at the arena. Whoever hosts this can perhaps arrange a training day in the arena once a month for an hour where the gladiators can spar each other, but there is no training outside (including SKILLS). They should be learning as they go otherwise the imbalance will get insane.

People can enter slaves for a flat fee (which is used to fund the point system, should not be a high amount since it should all be pretty basic equipment)who remain their property to be sold, traded, pulled from the arena etc. Freelance gladiators can join and pay the fee. If they can't pay the fee they are put in bondage to the arena for a certain amount of monthly fights. There should be no money awarded to gladiators or their owners, this is all for entertainment and bragging right of the gladiators/owners. If a gladiator misses x number of monthly fights they are pulled from the arena or owners can pull them from the arena. Once pulled from the arena, they can not be entered back in.

I'd also include animals and monsters as arena opponents. Also, I'd mix up fights two vs one, horseback vs foot. The more bloody, the better.

That's my advice for what its worth. Pardon any typos, my caffeine hasn't kicked in yet.

I see what you're saying Ariana. The point of my idea though, was to kind of have something else for the community to gather together for. Aside from weekly tavern nights.

Your idea kind of really limits the amount of people who can participate and such. Plus it may not be all that interesting to people if they can only play the character once a month ya know? Plus, people may want to make story lines for their gladiators outside of the arena. They may enjoy roleplaying them as a person too.

"Good" guilds may find it brutal and such..but that's why I brought it here to be discussed. Could we could swing it in such a way that guilds like Moonglow, Sanctus and such would want to participate. Example, D'hal suggested having skeletons fight for OES. Sanctus could have their men in golden armor fighting to win respect for the City of Sanctus. Blackmarsh could have people in Dull Copper armor that wished to prove themselves in 1 vs 1 combat more so than on the field. DOA could have slaves or something.

Point is..it doesn't have to exactly like a traditional deal. Plus..people are always going to think fighting is brutal and such.

As Talon stated, keeping it simple may work out to be the best. I don't see any reason why a good guild couldn't host a tournament of gladiators. If slaves are used to enter, that's just how it is. But from the sounds of it, most guilds will having people more than willing to prove their skill in the arena. So that wouldn't be the case.

So far this is what I've come up with:

Each guild presents two Gladiators. Slaves, Champions to represent, lost souls, skeletons, whatever.
Each Gladiator has his choice of 5 GM crafted weapons. (Rply it may sound silly to be strapped with 5 weapons. But let it go.)
Each Gladiator wears GM crafted armor. Any GM crafted armor that you want.
Each Gladiator is given only one way to heal out of the following options. Bandaids and Potions. (Only heal)
There are no casting spells, no jewlery or talismans.
Skills that arn't allowed are: Magery, Necro, Spirit Speak, Mysticism, Spellweaving, Chivlary, Poisoning, Ninjitsu, Bushido, Archery, Taming, Hiding.
Each Gladiator is to be fresh. No stat scrolls, no power scrolls. Highest skills are GM, keeping everyone in the same ball field.
Winning Gladiator is given a by to the end of the next tournament. The winning guild has the option of whether or not to host it in their City. If they wish not to, then the tournament is to be held in the same City for the following tournament. (Example, tourny is in Bmash..an OS guy wins..OS doesnt want to host it. Next tourny is back in Bmarsh) Winning guild is allowed to enter there Gladiators in the next tournament. Two to fight, and the previous Champion for the final battle.
Winning Guild is given the Gladiator Champion Trophy to hold for one month.
Any Gladiators who fall in the arena are welcome back the following month. That is, if their guild chooses to send them.

No problem *smiles* Was just a suggestion. I just would hate to see this turn in to basically a tournament/fight club sort of deal. Tournaments tend to work well for single events, but their success long term tends to wane. While my idea might be difficult for some to participate in, I think by allowing different skill levels the fights will be unbalanced and interest will falter. someone who is 70 skill is going to have a hard time against a 3x gm warrior. Traditionally gladiators weren't always trained and many were captured slaves with no fighting skills. I think if done as aforementioned it would be a great method for new rpers to get involved. They make a character, put them into the games and as other guilds watch the gladiators progress and fight I could see them rply propositioning them to join their group.

Regardless... if you can find enough support for your idea, go for it. I just was just sharing a scenario that would catch my interest personally since you brought it for opinions. I don't find tournaments interesting ooc or ic as they aren't realistic to a battle field, same reason duels don't interest me. The unpredictability of the fights and the ingenuity of the players would have to stimulating enough to catch my interest. I think you'll find that many in the community will have just as much of a hard time coming up with a GM only character with none of the prohibited skills than they would have making a new character. To me this idea sounds a lot less like a gladiator sort of thing and more like an ongoing tournament or fight club and should be renamed appropriately.

Well, people are still able to comment and share their opinions. If people would rather do it your way, then Im sure it could be geared towards that. But I feel about the same towards your scenario as you do towards mine Razz I feel like the very slow process would have people losing interest rather quickly. I just feel like the rule sets I've provided would keep people more interested. However, potatoe, patatoe type deal. Neither ideas are bad ideas.

Suggestions:

It seems to me that the name Gladiator Tournament is in itself a drawing card. Make it special and get it on the calendar for once a month... (bi-weeky at most, although interest might fade quickly if held too often) this would allow sufficient time for training, and some rp building suspense between encounters. I can imagine some great rp prior to the actual encounters.

Any number of fights could be held that evening, perhaps a two day event, one for spellcasters and one for close encounters of the bloody sort. Edit: on second thought, all should be held the same day.

I know absolutely nothing about running tournaments, and less about fighting. but I am very enthusiastic about seeing this evolve into a spectactual event!

Make it happen!!

I remember back in the day I was captured and used as a gladiator for a time in a shortly ran gladiator style event that is somewhat akin to what you have here. It was a lot of fun, and let's face it, gladiators are super cool and get all the chicks (Russel Crow, c'mon!)

Anyway, I have some suggestions which have been brainstormed a bit around the time of when I was a gladiator, though nothing was implemented since it shut down too fast.

In order to make things interesting, and disallow cheating as well as any real focus on template builds in general, gladiators should enter the arena naked, completely bare of anything including anything in their bag which can be used. On the arena floor are a number of pouches, bags, backpacks, etc, all with different kinds of gear. Some bags might have reags, some might have some potions, explosive, conflag, healing, etc, some might have a weapon, some might have some armor or a shield, some might have nothing.

A simple variation on that would be to have a central cache of weapons in the middle and the gladiators (preferably more than just two in this case) need to rush to pick up their weapons of choice. Perhaps starting out closer to the gladiators are weapons of lesser quality so they can choose to equip themselves early with something weak, or dash for the middle and risk potential slaughter for a better weapon.

To keep it interesting, change things up. Real gladiators didn't always fight against one another. Sometimes they fought animals. This can be the case here, too. Have some weapons and armor scattered around and then have a dragon or something in the middle. Not only do the gladiators have to kill each other, they need to overcome the dragon (thus, maybe it would be wisest to fight the dragon first while all participants are alive). Or have a straight up gladiators vs animal/monster of choice type match.

Another suggestion, as was popular for gladiator fights, would be to have historical re-creations of famous battles (much like what Gladiator the movie showed in the first big gladiator battle, Scipio vs Hannibal); Not only would this provide entertainment (Are you not entertained?!) but it would give brief snippets of history lessons, especially to those who were not around during these famous trials. I personally would love to see one team of gladiators representing the Orcs from years ago and another team representing Moonglow.

Another suggestion to keep things mixed up is to have objective-based gladiator matches, though nothing specific comes to mind. Something akin to king of the hill, where perhaps one well-armed gladiator must fend off multiple lesser-geared gladiators. Or capture the flag, or something else similar.

I personally would love to see any of these types of scenarios. I don't think making just a brand new character would be the best way to go about it as not everyone has room to make new characters just to toy around with gladiators. Perhaps have some nights where only new characters can do it, and other nights when established characters can, that way everyone can play.

These are just some suggestions, take them as you will.

How come when I suggested it, it was the worst idea that anyone ever thought of?
