I've been watching this show lately, Sparticus Blood and Sand. If you haven't seen this show before, you NEED to watch it. HBO. AMAZING.
Anyways, this sparked an idea in my mind. Thought I'd pitch this idea out for opinions.

How would the community feel about Gladiator Battles, once a month? My ideas were:

Each guild presents two gladiators. Each fight with only GM armor and GM weapons. No jewlery, no talismens, no magic.
The first inital tournament could be held in Blackmarsh. Guilds and spectators would gather in the Fighters Guild Arena. The Gladiators would battle 1vs1 (tournament style brackets)
The guild of the winning Gladiator would be presented with a prize, whatever it may be. They would also be given the Champion Gladiator trophy to hold for one month.
The following month guilds would bring two fighers again to meet in the Gladiator Arena (maybe in the City of the current Champion?) As a perk, the winning guild of the first tournament could enter three Gladiators. Two to fight, and the current Champion would be saved until the end.

Reasons why I think rply this would be amazing are:

Guilds would pride in training their Gladiators. They would hold special trainings to train either a group of them, and maybe even have their own guild tournaments to determine who represents them. Or guilds could have private trainings to focus on their gladiators.

Evil guilds such as OES, could enter Slaves or Captives to fight for them. Other guilds could have people trying to prove their skill as gladiators, or those who do not wish to fight in a military as their gladiators.

Guilds could barter and trade/sell their Gladiators to other guilds for things such as: Gold, Land, Free supplies, whatever.

I think this would be fun because almost anyone could participate. People wouldn't stress about things like having the money to make top knotch suits and such. Older rpers who arent as up to date with current PvP could even find themselves as top contestants. This would give guilds something extra to do roleplay wise.

Side ideas to think about: Once a gladiator dies in the arena, he can't ever participate again. Reason I find this may be difficult is people may not want to make a new char, buy scrolls, stone them..or name change or retrain chars.

Things to consider would be whether or not to allow bushido. It's a magic, but you're not really casting spells. I don't really want bushido, because it'd give an upper hand and we'd probably just end up with a bunch of Samurai fighting as Gladiators. Im thinking of keeping it old school straight up.

Some people may say it could be difficult to find enough people to want to be gladiators, because not many of the current templates would be useful in only GM armor and weapons with no jewlery and spells. My retort to that, is that I'm sure people have spare char slots, or would be more than willing to jump at the opportunity to make a new char just for this.

Just thinking on the possibilies for roleplay and plots and excitement permonth gets me PUMPED.

Thoughts?

I really like this, and D'thal would participate in a heartbeat.

It would be neat to have rotating arenas. One in blackmarsh, the Necromancer Arena near Umbra, etc.

Ya, that's what I thought. Cities could set up huge festivals or what have you for the day of the Gladiator Battles and stuff.

I HATE IT!

And I am all kinds of on board for this idea. I think it would be hella-fun.

Note: This isn't anything solid, just an idea ball to get it rolling.

I wasn't planning on allowing poisoning or potions. Just straight up warriors vs warriors. If you want parry, cool. Don't really -need- resists. Could even have 2-3 wep skills for more special attacks. (If you wanted to make a char purely for it. If you're just using a current one, then thats fine.)

Bushido perhaps could be used in the instance that you wanted to use two handed weapons and still have the parry bonus. Just couldn't use confidence or lighting strike.

No archery, gladiators with bows are silly!

Would be interesting to see a few times... Hardest part would be keeping it consistently interesting. Maybe have the gladiators do occasional pvm challenges to keep things different? Samurai would already have a parry bonus depending on the weapon they bring in... don't need them having a 5 mana armor ignore against some poor guy in GM armor on top of that.

Should be brand new characters only, IMO. No stat scrolls, no skill scrolls. Call it "Amateur Fighting" if you wish, as these guys would obviously get obliterated by anyone not abiding by the tourny rules.

I like both of your ideas. We could do things like the gladiators have to stand up to a Greater Dragon. Last standing wins or something. (Would be best in Umbra Arena so theres lots of room) or a monster a bit weaker so that they arent all one hit killed. But stuff to mix it up, solid idea Garret. Or even if each gladiator had to battle something smaller 1 vs 1...like a kitsune or ogre lord something like that. Survivor moves on.

As for Cals idea, I like this because... It's makes it a bit more presentable and appealing to people to make a char. Me for instance, I could stone a bunch of 120s over. But if someone wanted to make a new char and couldnt afford all that, and had to train stuff to GM then got WHOMPED..that'd break some peoples spirits, ya know?
Atleast with Cals idea..everyone would be in the same ball field and it'd be cost efficent and easy to work up.

Perm death could be a problem..... consider perhaps that the char were banned from participating for a set period of time, three months, six months?

And side bets, perhaps?

Something to consider... Limit people to only one way to heal. Potions, healing skill, spirit speak, etc.

As for GM only armor, still all sorts of things we can do with that. Sanctus could still make their gold armor, OES can send in noobs in GM bone armor, etc.

I want to do this now.

This actually sounds fun as hell. Moonglow would definitely participate and I would always have new gladiators if that were the rule. Problem is mages no matter what would probably die because the way new UO is, if your a mage without dci or a spell channeling shield or wrestle specials then your going to get eaten.

Otherwise it's an awesome idea and i'll be glad to help host this.

I like it.

The simpler the rules, the better and more sustainable it will be. If we overcomplicate it, it will prove to confusing and difficult to police.

I like the GM Armor/Weapon idea best of all.

If I may.. Additionally each time the gladiator night happens.. maybe a small callection of merchants could set up wares use outside? Make it like olden times. You could limit.. no more than say 50 items per vendor.
