As part of another RP group in another MMO, we had a forum called "reflections". It was a series of weekly exercises to get you thinking about your character's RP, opening them up for others to see a little more, practice in expressing yourself writing, and to have a "spark" to write character fiction, without a need to come up with it all on your own.

As a professional writer, I found these very exciting to do, and was a great way of getting to know the rest of the community, as well as helping me get over creative "humps".

If I were to start putting these up, would people be interesting in participating?

Quote:
This is a series of Writing Exercises reflecting on your character(s) and their past, present, future, nature, possibilities.

The opening prompt will be the start of a topic and replies can follow it.
The fiction can be something that actually happened in chronicle or just a wild twist of the imagination (I love What Ifs and alternate dimensions in comics), but they rarely get past a page of text and have been as small as three paragraphs. I don't think any sort of limit needs to be imposed, but this is more for short pieces and creativity than long stories (which folks would still love to read out in the other forums).
Any character can be used and multiple submissions with multiple chars is fine.

Others prompts may occur, but we'll start with these types:
Spark Word - A single word to think on and write what comes to you.
Memory - An actual character memory or past scene.
First Line - The first line will be provided for the writer to continue from.
What If - A question that is most often answered with a scene that hasn't happened (yet) in the main timeline, but sure would be interesting to "test out".

Feel free to write your own prompts, but please make sure it's not a duplicate and if you're willing to prompt, be willing to write.

And most of all....have fun.

I think it's an excellent concept, this is what we call the "fine-tune you RP to Perfection" stuff people. Things like this are how you really start to get into your Character's head. If Dealth starts throwing these up, given it a go and you'll be surprised where it takes you and your character!

That's the hope. It was doing fiction like this when i transitioned Dealth from UO to CoV that turned him from a straight forward power mad technomage, to the "sensual beast" he is now. Even babysteps can take you somewhere unexpected.

I spend a lot of time on my writing when I do write, so I don't do it terribly often. But I would be interested in the exercises, even if I don't participate every single week.

I'm game, assuming it's not a homework heavy week at school when some of the exercises are posted. Smile

I really want to get back into writing, I miss it, so this would definitely encourage me to write again.

I, personally, love writing exercises. They were a large part of my day while I took classes concerning creative writing in school. Best way to utilize the 1hr period of Trigonometry.

Seeing the support, even in the small time this has been up, I'm going to move forward with it.

That was a lot of words and I didn't want to read it all, but the short version is you give us the first line and we write the rest about something our characters have done?

in essence, yes. For the "First line" exercise. i toss out the first line, and you use it to build a story about your character.

Other exercises will have different rules.

I did something slightly different and wrote about someone else's character[dead] from one of my characters [also dead] perspective. I think it pretty well captures his opinion.

Hmmm, this is difficult to do anything self-reflective with on my current characters, because I need to introduce a man to the story somehow.
