Scar lay in his bed at Covenant Castle looking up at the ceiling. His mind was astir with thoughts that made his rest uneasy at best, and impossible at worst. Despite having come to terms with Erin and her true nature, he could not stop thinking about her. It consumed him. He no longer felt the insistence of fulfilling his duty, or attending meetings at Stonegate, or pursuing any other former interest. The love of beautiful women had always been his greatest weakness, and this current fixation revealed it clearly.

His reverie was broken by the sudden appearance of Thraxas at his doorway. He had pushed aside the blue and black curtains and stepped into the room unannounced. Spotting Scar, he bowed his head briefly in his direction. "Forgive the intrusion, master Scar, but I must speak with you and cannot delay."

Scar raised up and turned, sitting on the edge of his bed. He motioned for his landlord to sit in a nearby chair. Thraxas obliged him. "Think nothing of it, sire. What can I do for you?" he asked.

Thraxas crossed his leg and spoke gravely. "Yew is facing imminent invasion," he stated. "Were you aware of this?"

Scar's expression bespoke his ignorance. "No, I did not know this. Who is it?"

"Mercenaries from a place to the east of Alderglen called Blackmarsh. I am uncertain if it is one word or two. From what my agents tell me, it is not a new place, just one with a new name. The mercenaries of Cal Hurst and his band called 'Infinite' dwell there. Apparently, someone has employed them to strike against Yew, or else they are just feeling frisky or bored. They mean to lay claim to the Felucca facet of Yew. We expect an attack within the week."

"I have had many good times there (read women), so I would hate to see anything untoward happen. What can I do, sire? Do you wish to employ my bow?"

Thraxas shook his head. "Not at the moment. I want you to speak with the Wolf King and see if he will come to our aid. If you will but do that, it will be enough. The Empress Miko has committed her Samurai to the cause. With their aid, and that of Stonegate, we can overcome any opposition."

"What about the Protectorate, sire? Have they committed troops?"

"A few have, but not all. These mercenaries are warriors to the core. One of them is worth ten or more ordinary veteran soldiers. I understand Stonegate is a warrior nation. They will help us even the odds. Can you see to this today?"

"I will do what I can, sire, but I have not been faithful to my clan of late. I may find a rather chilling reception."

"What ails you, friend?"

Scar shook his head. "I would rather not speak of it."

Thraxas smiled. "A woman! Well, it could be worse. Surely your clan will understand."

"Perhaps," he said as he stood up. "I will get suited and go at once."

Thrax rose from his seat and placed a hand on the shoulder of the Lycan. "I knew I could count on you. My brother's faith in your loyalty was not displaced, and I have never doubted it. Go quickly, and bring me good news!" He bowed slightly and exited.

Scar hurriedly donned his armor in preparation to leave.
