Esric slipped quietly into his tenant's bedchamber, knowing exactly where to find what he was looking for. Locating the journal, he stole quickly and silently away.

An hour later, he dropped it onto the table in front of his employer who promptly rewarded his work with a sizeable sum of gold coin.

"Well done," Thraxas congratulated him. Esric took the money, bowed and departed, knowing this day's work was finished. He went downstairs to the tavern below to buy an ale and relax.

Thraxas opened the book and began to read his brother's private thoughts...

He found an interesting passage: "I met with my devil brother today. He refused to hear the elves' plea and dismissed me like some sort of annoying child. I grow very tired of his attitude. Everything he is and has is due to my hard work in the past, and yet I am forced to live like miserable gentry. If the elves are not going to do anything about his depradations, I will."

He had what he needed. He ripped out the page and wrote a brief note to the Empress whom he had recently spoken to about his brother's treacheries. She demanded proof of them and she would have it.

"Your Honorable Highness,

I am sending an excerpt I have taken from my brother's journal as you required proof of his nefarious dealings. I hope it will be sufficient to prove he has or will have designs against me. I ask that you release your samurai to deal with this menace as soon as possible. I believe my own life is in jeopardy; hence the urgency.

I await your reply and will gladly repay the measure in any way or in any amount you deem appropriate.
