Sarian rested in his private room at the Blackmarsh Inn. Sounds of construction just a few yards over could be heard. The Hamlet of Blackmarsh had been bustling with activity as of late. He thought back to just a couple of weeks ago, when he introduced the Infinitemen to the area.

"Sarian, question." Cal approached him.

"Ya?"

"Remember a few years back, before I joined Moonglow? I remember you telling me about an investment you had started to make. Do you still have it?"

Sarian grinned widely. "I do...and some." he replied. "Make a fancy gate off this here rune." Sarian tossed it on the ground.

Cal followed him through the red gate. The two popped out, amongst a collection of fairly large buildings. Cals jaw dropped.

"All of these?" He asked. "Is that...is that an animal pen?" Cal pointed.

"Aye it is."

"How did you come to own all of this?"

"When Beowulf, rest his soul, took me off of the streets, he brought me to this area. That's his old home over there." Sarian pointed to a massive stone building. "He had bought another plot of land just a little ways down. After he brought me here, I thought of perhaps investing in the area myself. With all of the money he paid me to help Moonglow, along with the earnings from serving Governor Regent Adrien, I began buying plots of land. When Beo and Vaen deminished the Northern Republic, there were still a few tradesmen who wanted to continue their work for the two. So Beowulf roomed them here.."

Sarian and Cal slowly walked across the area. He told the story quickly while pointing out spots.

"When the blackrock detector was being built in Moonglow, Beo began to worry. Then there was the invasion, a couple of them. Together, we secretly began establishing a.."Hamlet" if you will. Not quite a village...but self sustaining. We built the barracks, which consisted of our small armory, blacksmith shop, tailor shop, carpentry shop, and a bakers and butchers shops. The Northern Traders started working the area. Over there (Sarian pointed behind them) are the mountains for mining, the surrounding forest for wood. We built the tavern and inn to house the workers. We never got far on the decorating part. We began breeding cattle for meat and dairy. The area became known as "Blackmarsh". Before Beo went off on his final adventure, he signed all deeds of land over to me. There's a couple spots where the fellas can have their own places built."

Cal nodded while surveying the area. "A fine place Blackmarsh would make for the Infinite Headquarters. A self sustaining area, tradesmen at our disposal, and a tavern for a resting place. We can hang our hats here."

Sarian got up out of bed and made his way downstairs. Ragnars home had been built and decorated to his liking. The museum that Beowulf had slacked on, was finally being filled. Workers were making preparations to begin building on a massive plot of land, where Cal would reside.

Gerard entered through the main doors. He nodded once at Sarian and bid him a good morning. The two made their way to the contract room, where Cal was just finishing writing in his diary.

"Hey Cal, wanna learn to milk a cow?" Sarian laughed.

"So, ya just squeeze these dangly things?"

"Yeah. Right into the bucket."

"So I have to violate the cow by squeezing its teets, removing it of its natural juices, and then..."

"Don't put it like that, Cal."

"Well damn, Sarian, how else should I word it?"

The two stood in Blackmarsh's animal pen, both wearing straw hats, long pants, and a short sleeve shirt, as the afternoon sun shone down on them both. Standing and wiping his forehead, Cal sighed.

"The hell am I going to say to people? Hi, I'm Cal Hurst. Mercenary. And if you got any cows, I can squeeze their teets for ya."

"Hey, it's part of the territory. Keeps things flowing around here. And until we can hire people to do this for us, we're the teet squeezers."

Cal muttered under his breath as the two continued working on milking the cows.

Gerard and Sarian returned from another day of Arcanamach training. Blackmarsh seemed as it was always. Slightly dark, a lost monster or two, and the animal pen full of their money making cows.

"You're coming along just fine Gerard. I'm almost positive you'll be a better warrior than myself soon." Sarian said

"Aye, I feel like I've..." Gerard trailed off. His eyes glared just past the animal pen. He slowly raised his hand and extended a pointing finger. Sarian followed his gaze.

"You've got to be kidding me. Another one?!"

The unicorn bucked wildly, lifting its head up, then down. Again, and again. Every few seconds, it'd catch a glance of a shadow being cast by his tail. The unicorn would give chase. Around and around, circle after circle.

"That has to be the dumbest unicorn I've ever seen." Gerard claimed.

The pair sighed quietly. Each of the Infinite members were baffled as to how unicorns kept popping up. They were becoming an annoyance. Stirring up the cattle, attacking certain workers, being majestic...the list went on.

"Alright well... I dispatched of the last two." Sarian muttered. "I guess I could do away with this one."

"Well...we don't really have to get our hands dirty." Gerard grinned. "Rauvvrae!"

A swarm of all sorts of insects crawled out of the ground. Clusters of them gathered, buzzing and humming. Together, both Sarian and Gerard conjured up several clusters of these deceased insects. They quickly crawled across the ground, devouring the unicorn from the legs up.

"We may have gone a bit over board.." Sarian began to say. Before he could finish his sentence, the insects had finished off the unicorn. Before either men could take a breath, the insects shot into different directions. Great Hinds, Hinds, Wolves, all animals were devoured in seconds. A couple clusters swarmed through the fence openings surrounding the animal pen, eradicating all of the cattle.

Then they were gone, dispersed.

"Ya. Guess we did." Gerard replied. He turned to look at Sarian, whose face was pale white, his jaw nearly hitting the ground.

"I mean...it's not like we haven't had dead animals around. There's tons from those cats that keep visiting." Gerard tried to comfort Sarian.

Cal strolled around the corner from the Tavern. He whistled loudly and had a bounce in his step. For the first day in a couple, he hadn't seen a dead animal nor a unicorn.

"Hey Fellas! Hows it go.... WHAT THE HELL!?" Cal yelled in disbelief.

The scene he saw coming around the corner was, Sarian - pale white, jaw dropped and speechless. Gerard looking around, slightly confused and rocking back and forth on his heels in an awkward fashion. A mutilated unicorn, a pen full of slaughtered cattle, and random animals scattered and dead.

"I know I complained about milking the cows. But I wasn't -this- upset. Suppose this may be a good time to hire some real farmers..." Cal muttered

The citizens gathered around and clapped, a few even whistled. Blackmarsh had its first Mayor. For the most part, the citizens expected Sarian to have run. He'd done everything for the town, worked around the clock to make sure things went smoothly. His mercenary comrades did their fair share too, even milked cows. But alas, Sarian had refused any position that suggested paper work or diplomacy.

Denzin was his name. Denzin Bracken. He was the brother of Dale Bracken, one of the mercenaries that occupied Blackmarsh. It was still uncertain why Denzin had any interest in the town itself. He wore jewelry covered in diamonds, clothes made from some of the most expensive clothe, even the mount he rode was an extremely rare breed of horse. The man wreaked of wealth, but had hit it off with every one of the citizens. From his very first visit, Denzin was learning how to milk cows - he was told everyone had to learn - chop wood, feed the cows, the list went on. He had no problem getting his hands dirty. This is the reason Sarian had assumed the citizens voted anonymously for the new comer.

* * *

Only a few remained awake at the end of the evening. Denzin, Cal, Sarian and Buri sat around a table. The dim glowing light flickered off of the candle.

"So boys..." Denzin began. "I understand that you've built most of this place yourself, before most of this activity Sarian. I also understand that you mercenary fellas enjoy your lives here. Blackmarsh, is still primitive. We do things simple, like they use to be. We don't have a military, we don't have people to enforce law, not that any is needed at the moment. But we do need protection. You fellas have done a fine job so far, the towns perimeters look completely fortified and well defended. I want to work out a contract to keep you two and the rest of the mercenaries working around the area to insure the safety of Blackmarsh citizens. You won't be required to uphold any law, nor will you have the power to do so. But if anyone from outside of our town, so much as lays a hand on one of the citizens, your job will be to punish that person to the full extent."

Cal nodded a bit. "Fine details to a contract can be worked out soon, Denzin. The Infinite will do it's job to protect Blackmarshs' citizens. Any harm to them, is indeed harm to us."

"Right then. There's also another matter I wanted to bring up. A couple of the citizens have been workin along side some citizens from Cove, just across the way. They help each other out in the forest and such. Apparently the Covians are havin it a bit rough now-a-days. No ones there to protect em, there's always a threatening mist and they haven't had solid trade in years. I'd like to head over there with a couple of you mercs and have a look around, introduce ourselves. See what we can do for them." Denzin sat back in his chair.

"Fifty thousand each and Sarian and I will accompany you whenever you'd like to go." Cal smiled.

"Deal."
