*The following letter is presented on expensive and durable parchment sealed with a seldom used insignia*
Honored Prince of Sanctus,
The gardens of Castle Blackguard look truly lovely this time of year. The citizens have done an excellent job of their care and maintenance. I am writing you this evening because I was denied audience with you, Honorable Prince, and more disturbingly the treatment I received from both your Governor and your Sheriff. I am not a terrible vain man but I expected that the two might know who I am. Both of them professed to neither recognizing me or knowing me in the slightest until, as I parted, I shared my name. Even then, they appeared to have no knowledge of myself or my past.
Having established this, I would like to share how truly poorly I was treated by both your Governor and Sheriff. I arrived in Sanctus, and your Sheriff greeted me but I could not understand any of his words. He was muffled by the non-standard uniform he was wearing and I was only able to recognize him as a soldier by his sash and gold apron. I entered Castle Blackguard, taking the approved route through the 'gauntlet' and when I got into the gardens, I was ordered to halt as an intruder by your Governor. He stepped out of whatever chamber he was hiding in and ordered that I be arrested for trespassing. Your sheriff then gleefully wrote me a ticket and tried to march me off saying that there was no need for court, or a trial or and processing and it was 'my lucky day for swift justice'. Unless the practices that Talon set forth have long since died, this is not the Honorable and Duty-Bound system of Justice and Government that I once knew and came to expect from Sanctus.
Furthermore, your Sheriff needed to be instructed several times by your Governor on "what to do with me". I am not sure if the Governor outranks the Sheriff according to your command structure but it seems less than prudent and far less than honorable that a military structure would supercede a legal code. I would suspect someone appointed to the post of Sheriff would understand the Law better and be better equipped to enforce it than a Governor.
Your subordinates admitted having no idea who I was and no prior knowledge of my actions.
Your Sheriff let me go right on in to Blackguard.
Your Governor spotted me and ordered your Sheriff to act.
Your Governor dictated how the Sheriff should be acting.
Your Sheriff did as he was told.
Your Sheriff bypassed any formal legal action and carried "justice" out himself.
Your Sheriff didn't understand that legal action in the first place.
They continued to both be rude and belligerent towards me as I left.
In any event, please don't interpret my letter as an attempt to tell you how to manage Sanctus. I would just like to you be aware of the falling standards for the once noble House of Skyfire and its Kingdom.
I did have some rather interesting news for you regarding our mutual friend, the Lich Lord. They would not allow me to deliver it.
Faithfully yours,
~Bailos
