Tay awoke in the morning to a bitter chill. He had spent so many months in the perfect climate of Moonglow, that his move to Stonegate seemed to take a bit of getting use to. It didn't help that the bear rug beneath him was his only form of padding between him and the stone floor. Ciara laid on top of him, still sound asleep. Her face buried in his chest, his cloak wrapped tightly around her.
Tay made his way out of the Outpost and out into the chilly morning. Stonegate would be his residence, for now. Umbra had fallen and the closest people he had to friends, were here. He wasn't thrilled about all the wars being faught. His own agenda didn't include time to battle. Tay could only hope that Stonegate would be safe from fights, for a while.
* * *
Tay walked the golden brick roads of Luna. His eyes darting back and forth. Finally he saw one. A paladin, walking alone along the inner walls. He took a deep breath and approached the paladin.
"Excuse me, sir!" Tay spoke.
"Aye? How can I help ya lad?" The paladin kindly replied.
"I'm in need of your aid. It doesn't require a lot of effort, I just need a follower of the virtues to help guide my path." Tay told him.
"Aid? Guide your path? What is it that you seek, friend?" The paladin stood straight and tall. His armor glittering from the brightness of Luna.
"It's my sister. She was kidnapped by...undead. They're holding her captive, a top the bank in Umbra, sir. I would try to rescue her myself, but I need a follower of the light to help drive the evil away!"
The paladins eyes immediately widened. His hand gripped the butt of his sword, his teeth ground together. He puffed out his chest and spoke, full of confidence. "Let us go then, lad. We shall drive the undead further back into their darkened City, and rescue your sister!"
Tay nodded softly. He led the way to the Moongate and disappeared from Luna.
The two arrived in Umbra. The paladin had his sword at the ready, calling upon prayers to protect him on his endeavor. Tay stood behind him, calmly.
"Perhaps you should hide your sword for now, paladin. We wouldn't want the undead getting alarmed and killing my sister. We'll sneak up on them." Tay suggested.
The paladin nodded his agreement. He sheathed his sword and bid Tay to lead on. The two strode along the edge of the road towards the bank. They did their best to stick to the shadows. The paladins armor inconveniently clanked most of the time, causing the stealthiness to be useless.
Tay pointed to the bank, which was only a few meters away now. The paladin eyed the building and saw the stair case. He held up his hand for Tay to stay.
"Follow behind me, but be cautious, lad." The paladin spoke, protectively.
Tay followed him, carefully, toward the bank. Together they stood on the lower level. Tay rest his hand on his cutlass, strapped on his belt. The paladin, with sword in hand, breathed heavily.
"Go!" The paladin commanded, as he rushed the stairs.
The two hit the roof, the paladin began shouting spells of chivalry. But...there was no one. He looked around frantically.
"Why is there a large rock up here?" The paladin asked.
"Look! Over there, to the West!" Tay shouted.
The paladin spun and rushed to the edge of the roof. He squinted his eyes. Again, he saw nothing. A sharp burning pain shot up through his back. His hand opened in panic, dropping his sword off the edge of the roof. Another stab of pain shot through his back.
"Wha..!?" The paladin choked on his word.
Tay pulled the cutlass from the paladins back. He stepped forward, wrapping his free arm around the paladins waist. His other arm wrapped around, pulling the edge of the cutlass across the paladins throat. His knees buckled and he dropped.
"Wh..Why?" The paladin weezed his question.
"I do apologize for the theatrics. My sister, both actually, are already dead. Killed by the Lich Lord. Conversely, you're still doing your part in fighting the Undead. However, you're merely being used to deliver a message." Tay knelt beside the paladin, as he continued to bleed out. He reached into his pack and pulled out a piece of parchment, with writing, and a poorly crafted dagger. He unraveled the parchment and placed it upside down on the paladins chest, then drove the dagger through both parchment and flesh. Again he reached into his pack, this time pulling out rope. Tay tied around the bottom of the paladins legs, and his ankles. He tied the free end around the rock. "It was actually more work getting this massive rock up here, undetected, then it was bringing you." He chuckled.
"You are apart of something beautiful, sir." Tay claimed. He put a hand to the paladins cheek and nodded softly.
Then he shoved the paladin from the roof. He hung there, blood trickled slowly to the road below. The parchment was now face up.
"My time is soon, Lich Lord. Yours, is over." |
