Jeren walked swiftly to his office after meeting with his Council. After the events shared to them, witnessed with his own eyes, the Council of Jhelom felt that there was a need to address the outbreak of lawless acts that took place that eve during the appointment of the Regent. The Council gave much voice to where the Republic of Jhelom should stand when it came to the organizations that hail from Umbra. Unfortunately, for Jeren, the agreement of what should be said fell upon his pen. When completed he informed his scouts to deliver this message to frequently established business fronts in Umbra. He also informed a separate scout to deliver this notice to the Offices of the Regent as a record of this Republic's intent.
To whom it concerns,
Recently, on the eve of the election of the new Regent which may or may not be recognized by the organizations of Umbra an outbreak of chaos broke out due to many reasons, but specifically I write this early morn regarding not just what took place that evening, but to attempt to open a freedom of communication between the Republic of Jhelom and those involved that evening from Umbra.
Since we have yet to meet formally, I am Chief Magistrate Jeren Yendorin. I speak as the executive authority and on the behalf of the Council assembled for the Republic of Jhelom. I am not, nor is my Republic, the first that will raise my blade due to disagreement on the topic of ethics and morals, but to state plainly, after witnessing what took place that evening, Sosaria seems to be filled with such idea. I have been away for some time in the civilized lands and I do not have a record of your past at my disposal. Or for that matter, a history of what has led it to this point between both. Due to those circumstances, this Republic stands on what we know to be true.
We believe in knowledge and comprehension over misunderstandings and misleading behavior. The very idea of such a discipline is lacking from both ends of the world if it has led here without the diplomacy and treaty of all that mankind deserves. I wish to open lines of communication with any who is willing to apply the forethought that nations or organizations warring tend to never affect those on a throne or pedestal, but the very people who breathe the air between the vengeful acts; as to the example of a couple evenings ago.
Let it be said, for now, and into our future that the Republic of Jhelom wishes to seek alliances worthy of the very meaning that molds co-existence for all of mankind. This Republic has yet to make any ally on either side of this great divide. This parchment is posted to seek out those willing to have the fortitude to overcome hatred and ill-advised attempts to bring this great land into utter chaos and further destruction.
In closing, I stated above that I am not, nor is my Republic, the first that will raise my blade due to disagreement on the topic of ethics and morals, but let me finish by clearly explaining that we will not be the last to do as such if diplomacy seems to be beneath our adversaries.
Respectfully,
Chief Magistrate Yendorin
Republic of Jhelom

Kinn had just finished his first afternoon patrol of Umbra and the Drow Quarter when he saw the man who clearly didn't belong in this town.
What have we here? Kinn silently wondered. He felt his hand instinctively reach for one of the poison-coated Shuriken tucked into one of the many secret pockets of his belt.
There had been word on the streets of Umbra that some very unfamiliar and likely unwelcome humans had been seen in various parts of the city over the last couple of nights. Were they spies from Moonglow or Zento? Perhaps Sanctus had sent infiltrators? The Protectorate, maybe? Umbra had so many enemies these days--it could be anyone!
Regardless of who it was, strangers in Umbra during times like these probably meant trouble and Kinn didn't like any trouble he wasn't causing himself. He decided to conduct an occasional patrol of the city (and the Drow Quarter especially) to make sure there wasn't any unsanctioned "trouble" about. Looking at this man--who wasn't exactly carrying himself like a Paladin, but certainly didn't look like a Necromancer either--made Kinn glad for his decision to patrol this afternoon.
He doesn't wear the colors of Moonglow and he doesn't move like one of the Zento ninja, so maybe I should at least see what his business here is before I kill him. , Kinn thought.
Besides, he's almost to The Tangled Web and Lloth knows that the Matron, the Patron AND the Matriarch will have my head if I made a bloody mess on the steps of thier favorite tavern. Come to think of it, Kinn mused, The Boss probably wouldn't be too thrilled with me either.
So Kinn, careful not to let any of the deadly green ichor on the blades touch his skin, put his shuriken away and silently watched the stranger from the shadows.
Kinn watched as the man posted a notice on the tavern door. Kinn continued to follow the man, making sure he remained cloaked in shadow so he would not be seen, as the man posted the same notice on several prominent buildings throughout Umbra. He secretly hoped the man would be foolish enough to put a note on the front door of the Sepulcher--it would be interesting if the Umbran Matriarch or even one of her Warlords were there. Alas, the man must have had instructions (or enough common sense) to avoid THAT particular building.
It was only after the stranger had left the city that he returned to The Tangled Web to read what the message said.
After reading it, Kinn could not help but laugh out loud.
Ha! "lack of discipline"? Talks of diplomacy with "all mankind"? Coexistence with all of "Mankind"? Bah! What fun would that be? Still, I wonder what the Matron, the Matriarch and the Boss are going to think? This should be interesting indeed.......
Kinn walked into the bar for a mid-afternoon drink, still chuckling softly to himself. |

Ceinwyn happened upon the parchment. Another one from Jeren. They were fast becoming her favorite to read. Having torn it down and taken it back to her office, she penned the following response, with direction that it be delivered directly to the office of Jeren Yendorin in Jhelom.
To Chief Magistrate Sir Jeren Yendorin of the Republic of Jhelom, formerly of Trinsic,
Greetings and well met, Chief Magistrate Sir Jeren Yendorin of the Republic of Jhelom, formerly of Trinsic.
First of all, I most abjectly and humbly apologize that you were forced to bear witness to the events of Sunday eve's election. I myself remain appalled by the depravity and ferocity with which the new regent has chosen to conduct herself. She stands as a true testament to the degradation of Britannia's judicial system, both with her demeanor and with the persistent existence of her position as regent in the face of the true king, King Casca.
Indeed, Chief Magistrate Sir Jeren Yendorin of the Republic of Jhelom, formerly of Trinsic, Sosaria does seem to be filled with people who would take up blade against those whose opinions and beliefs differ to their own. Long has Umbra been a victim of such prejudice and hostility. Are you one of those who would raise your weapon against another simply because you disagree with them? You state that you believe in knowledge and comprehension over misunderstandings and misleading behavior, yet your very words contradict you with your mention of raising arms.
If it is diplomacy that you truly seek, Chief Magistrate Sir Jeren Yendorin of the Republic of Jhelom, formerly of Trinsic, meet with me that we might come to some understanding. You express in your notice that you do not have a record of our past. I am feeling generous and patient enough to be willing to educate you and bring you up to date. Perhaps, if you had more knowledge at your "disposal" you would be less inclined to blindly take up the side of those claiming to be the "light". Let it be known that before the recent election, the so called "protectorate" was only at war with a league of vampires, and not the lands of Umbra. It is because they have grown bored with the sudden lack of opposition that they seek now to amuse themselves at our expense. Perhaps if we meet and discuss the issue, you will find the enlightenment that you seek.
You may consider this an open line of communication and an invitation to my office for an audience. Chief Magistrate Sir Jeren Yendorin of the Republic of Jhelom, formerly of Trinsic, having read your frequent notices regularly and somewhat fanatically, I naturally have a few questions for you, as well. I am comfortable to allow these to wait until our first meeting. You are free to bring whatever guard or guards that you wish if it makes you more comfortable to be within my presence without fear.
Those very people who "breathe the air between the vengeful acts" are those who in the end come to Umbra seeking solace and reprieve from persecution. Those seeking the freedom to be what and who they truly are, and to study what they wish without fear of burning at the stake or being drawn and quartered or hung for their beliefs. Chief Magistrate Sir Jeren Yendorin of the Republic of Jhelom, formerly of Trinsic, perhaps your words would have been better heard by the witch hunters of Sanctus.
Umbra itself defines the very meaning of co-existence, and not just mankind, but all other kinds, as well. If you would seek an ally, perhaps you would do best to seek one that did not attack visitors at an election. One that would focus on the true problem within their home city, the vampires, instead of casting greedy eyes to other facets of no concern to their own. Chief Magistrate Sir Jeren Yendorin of the Republic of Jhelom, formerly of Trinsic, Umbra has the fortitude for a great many things. We have grown accustomed to the hatred and ill-advised attempts of outsiders to mold our land into what they deem "proper" and "right".
Woe to any who take up their blades of "righteousness" and "justice" in an attempt to tear my realm asunder. We have been quiet and patient with those outside of our lands. If any more acts of hostility are met, that peace and quiet will come an an unfortunate end and my patience shall be utterly and completely exhausted. Chief Magistrate Sir Jeren Yendorin of the Republic of Jhelom, formerly of Trinsic, I have shown great mercy thus far in my rule, and to date we have not made any acts of aggression to those without provocation. If the regent's hostility continues, that will come to an end. I am sure you can understand the position I am backed into.
If it is true diplomacy that you seek, then you will display a stern backbone and meet with me in person, Chief Magistrate Sir Jeren Yendorin of the Republic of Jhelom, formerly of Trinsic.
Respectfully,
Ceinwyn ab'Arawn

Jeren sat at his desk with his door opened as a scribe walked in and explained that a letter sealed from the Matriarch of Umbra has been delivered by a messenger. Jeren nodded and informed the scribe after he received the letter to close the door and gather the Council in his Office immediately. He read the content and noticed an alarming redundancy to his title. Included he noted that the Matriarch was confused by the intent of the Regent; confused in mind and soul.
The Council quickly stampered in the small office. The parchment was slowly read by each member as Jeren spoke.
"If you read closely the Matriarch would have us believe that the Regency is the enemy. No diplomacy can be found from a group all ready destined on a course to self destruct. As a first response, this should have been one of understanding and details should have been left for a face to face meeting. If the Council has no objections I am not going to respond."
The Council began mumbling across the office debating the decision posed by Jeren. One member "I strongly suggest you inform the Matriarch of your title Chief Magistrate."
"Tis not important, I am not here to stomp my feet because another leader wishes to poke fun at a title indirectly. It is best we await Lady Starfire. Our importance should be focused on that on this day. So it is clear, no one from this Council will return message to Umbra. I have nothing further. Ohh, scribe...find the scout that sent this letter to the Offices of the Regent and ensure they receive copy of the return response from the Matriarch of Umbra. It should be interesting to see what Lady Starfire has to say on the subject."
The Council members left Jeren's office and Jeren opened his top draw and placed the letter inside. |
