|
Need info from the community in an effort to better perfect my knowledge as I have heard conflicting accounts.
Lunar and solar cycles.
Trammel and Felucca are the moons and the according facets are governed by them. Are the moons still viewable on both facets?
Malas and Tokuno appear to have light cycles, is there sunlight/moonlight on them as well? Makes sense that there should be if plants grow there, but heard it spoken otherwise considering the void on the outside of Malas.
City of Umbra and it's surrounding lands, are they cast in a shadowed darkness? If so does any light come through?
Vampires who are governed in their torpor/sleep by the rise of the sun...
What dictates it? Are all facets on the same sunrise? Sunrise is usually deemed by server up from my experience.
If there is no sunrise on a facet, is the need for sleep brought about? Is it determined by the facet of which they were embraced if there are different cycles?
Aging.. I've heard usually one rl month = 1 rp year. I can't imagine any 'aging' system being without some realistic flaw, but is this the standard in this community?
I'm sure I will have more, but as I was writing a story these questions were forced into my head. Any insight into the popular theories would be most appreciative so I can make sure my stories are at least somewhat in line with the generally accepted fiction.
Thank you very much _________________

I wish I could offer more solid answers, but I only have disconnected insight.
When it comes to player aging (and how vampires function on Atlantic too, now that I think about it), you won't find a universal, 100% accepted community-wide answer. In the past, we've tried to standardize some stuff like this, and generally someone doesn't like "being told how to play their character" and go full flow into the "I pay my 12.99 a month, not you" rant.
So, short answer, if I remember right from the last time player aging came up...:
Some characters age at UO speed. Some characters age at UO speed, but with a massive growth burst from birth to 16-18~ in a short month or two (AKA, soap opera aging). And of course, some characters do not age at all, ever. Ever.
There was an argument over vampires as well. The old vampires followed V:TM with an Atlantic specific twist, but I'm pretty sure the more recent ones have their own thing that I don't know of. I know I couldn't even give a vague opinion on that topic without someone screaming at me.
Hope you find the rest of your answers. |

4 RL months to 1 character year?
An' thank you Kujabis... I don't expect there to be "one" answer as I know age is hard to get everyone to agree on, but some ideas on what are the common ways used by players will definitely help as I try to figure out how to base off my characters. I need to know when poor Ariana is going to start getting old and wrinkled *gasps* _________________

Yeah, that was it, 4:1. I think the argument against 4:1 was, "I've been playing since launch, so my character is FORTY YEARS older now!?!??"
"Uh, yeah." |

Kujasteve is right. there seems to be a few ideas on age. there's the 1year = one month. there's the four months per one year, and the one the devs stated which is five years per one. (this is excessively close to cal's 4mths per month) Just choose the one you like and stick with it.
As far as tram/ fel, they are each other's moons. Like, if you are in fel, and look up at the sky, tram is supposedly the moon.
The others I'll leave for people who play their vampires more than I play mine. *grins* _________________ (4:45:41 PM) Jarem: It becomes increasingly difficult to feel noble in my causes when my cause is to defend my charge from her own violent tendencies. |

Depends on the lore you want to follow.
Personally, I beleive that the facets are just named after the moons. You always see both moons in the sky. Thats the way it was in the original games, and if you use a spyglass in ultima online you see two moons. _________________ "You see I can not be forsaken, because I'm not the only one. This is how I go by as well. Unfortunately, the wording of the facet "split" has it written so that people live on the separate moons. Which always confused me, because what happened to the original planet, etc etc?
I digress, though. I go by what Mairsil says. _________________

The months proceed 4:1, years pass 5:1.
If you look through a spyglass on either facet, it gives you the phase of both moons, so I would say they are both viewable. Trammel was created as a mirror to Felucca to guard against Minax, so it should be a complete and perfect copy to Fel. |

Great input everyone.. thank you!!!
I was thinking the facets were just named for them myself, but lore seems to be off kilter from that a bit which confused me.
Anyone know about Malas or Tokuno lore wise? Are they governed via the sun/moons? _________________

As for night and day I feel it would be impossible to follow the actual cycles of UO, it would be hard to RP when every hour I would go into a torpor, so I play it as close to actual day and night as possible for I am not usually on during the day unless it is a weekend, I also play it that as an Elder vampire I have some resistance to the sun and can spend some time out in it before bursting into flames.
Not perfect by any means, just trying to find a happy medium between VtM and UO. _________________ "Sic Gorgiamus Allos Subjectatos Nunc...

Floating within a dark sea of stars, Malas is a broken land, wracked by great tremors that constantly threaten the stability of its continents. Its origin is a mystery, and its future inscrutable, but what is known is that this facet is unlike any other. Three great sections of land — one of which is already in the process of crumbling into smaller islands — are connected by bridges, and in between them lays a vast abyss of nothingness.

To let it be known there IS a sun in Malas, according to UO lore from Age of Shadows.
Age of Shadows Official Fiction
Quote: | ""Malas?" Greyn scanned the horizon. The sun made quick mirages flash and fade over the hot sands, but other than his brother, the two strangers and their horses, no sign of life could be seen. "I've never heard of such a place."" |

um·bra (ŭm'brə) Pronunciation Key
n. pl. um·bras or um·brae (-brē)
1. A dark area, especially the blackest part of a shadow from which all light is cut off. See Synonyms at shade.
2. Astronomy
1. The completely dark portion of the shadow cast by the earth, moon, or other body during an eclipse.
2. The darkest region of a sunspot.
Little was ever mentioned on whether or not there is actually a shadow over the city in lore, be it Stratics, UO.com, AoS Fiction page, etc. That being said, more than one resource mentions the land being so corrupt that it even turned the moongate black, instead of the normal blue color. We RP that the place is darker, easier on the eyes. As night and day still both exist, perhaps the sunlight is filtered through a haze of shadow above the city? I would say, any place the land isn't corrupted and is lush and green (such as the pixie spawns, etc) is where sunlight actually gets through quite clearly. Places like the Corrupted Forest, on the other hand, lurk in shadows.
Here are some established facts about Malas, according to UO lore:
1. The dark facet(Malas itself) seems to have a shadow cast over it, almost as if it absorbs light.
2. The land within appears to rest over a great void that seems to extend in all directions.
3. Malas is a broken land, wracked by great tremors that constantly threaten the stability of its continents.
4. Three great sections of land — one of which is already in the process of crumbling into smaller islands — are connected by bridges, and in between them lays a vast abyss of nothingness.
5. There is a sun that rises and sets.
6. Greyn Grimmswind taught Chivalry. Mordin Grimmswind taught Necromancy. They were brothers.
7. Grimmswind Ruins in northern Malas belonged to they and their father, Brevinor, an explorer and cartographer.
8. Malas suffers the same weather cycles as Trammel and other facets, including the festive snow.
Quote: | Vampires who are governed in their torpor/sleep by the rise of the sun...
What dictates it? Are all facets on the same sunrise? Sunrise is usually deemed by server up from my experience.
If there is no sunrise on a facet, is the need for sleep brought about? Is it determined by the facet of which they were embraced if there are different cycles? |
Until the arrival of CAP, most of the vampires I interacted with ignored day and night in UO, because night only lasts a few minutes. I generally have Cein get tired a little later in the evening (4-5 am?). She is out at night anyway, during prime time rp hours.
I never put much thought into the place of embrace governing the cycle. I am also curious to hear more from others. Hope my information was helpful. |

The shard is a piece of the broken Gem of Immortality. And just like any he has many sides. Peering through one side (of facet) one would see Trammel, through others Felucca, Malas, Ilshenar and Tokuno. Other facets are still blank or dark, but in the future one might see other places throught it.
Yeah, I know, very crude drawing.
Aging:
People always aged differently in the Ultima Saga. Non-important characters grew old. Others, like the Companions and notable characters barely aged at all. There is a gap of 200 years between Ultima VI and VII. Iolo the oldest of the companions aged visibly, Shamino aged, but not as much, while Dupre stayed the same more or less. And in VII (Part II: The Serpent Isle) it was revealed that Shamino was so old he had forgotten most of his life.
Therefore the rule should be: Age as you see fit.
For Sir Robert I barely used any "age" but more a description: "A man apparently in his mid thirties". instead of 35, using the fractions of "early thirties, early to mid thirties, mid thirties, mid to late thirties, late thirties, late thirties to early fourties".
But again, that is just me. _________________ Reality, the refuge of those who fail in RPGs
