Exactly! In the real world where the staff have jobs just like the playerbase (i.e. they don't get paid to be staff, and most would rather actually play the game rather than run around on a GM character), it's the players that have to make and drive the roleplay. And it certainly doesn't have to be centered around an event. That's the main goal anyway.
Posing your question the way you did, I'd vote Felucca. It will be interesting to see what others vote. Should I start a new thread as a poll with that question to get more responses? |

I dont think a free shard should be considered until UO is taken down, or another asian themed expansion comes out. however as a C# programmer i'll be happy to help. that aside.
Id really like to see cross shard RP events / socials take place. ima get on that. _________________

Well like I said Cear, I'm not interested in the concept of a replacement to Atlantic. Sure, such a thing definately appeals to those tired of Atlantic, don't want to pay a subscription, and other reasons I am sure, but overall a replacement isn't as desirable. |

Why exactly not?
When I ask this, I'm not meaning to sound rude. I'm sincerely trying to get some feedback. Attracting a good playerbase is the hardest part of putting a freeshard online. What exactly are the hurdles that players think about? (Please be as honest as possible) |

There's a few pluses to what Miller is talking about. Sure, I'm not playing right now. But I think that a RP Freeshard would appeal to wide array of players that are either currently playing UO on Atlantic or used to. I for one am one of those who hate having to pay a monthly fee, that suddenly goes away with a freeshard available. The possibilities are quite awesome and I see the wisdom in Miller's idea.
I'll assist in any way I can man. Keep me updated! |

Because it doesn't work, or work nearly as well. It is a mentality thing, a business thing. If you advertise your freeshard as a replacement to the existing EA servers for roleplay, you get all sorts of negativity associated with people quitting to go to the new server. Examples of that negativity would include (but not be limited to) players being afraid that their friends staying on the EA servers will get upset with them, players worried they'll be expected to quit the EA servers or ridiculed if they do not, etc. It also has a ring of 'theres no going back!' to it, because some players associate freeshards with something illegal that'll get them banned from the EA servers, and that by playing a freeshard, they are putting their account in jeopardy.
The above might look like pretty detailed guesswork or assumptions, but it comes from quite a few sources... Working on freeshards, gathering ideas from people that are traditionally not interested in freeshards, and observing strategies (or lack thereof) for getting people to play freeshards and the reactions people have to those.
TL;DR, advertising with an air of 'replacement' will back some of your potential players into a corner, and also the few yet die hard 'never going to be interested in a freeshard ever' types will scream even louder and might go so far as to campaign against it on the forums or privately harass anyone that expresses public interest in your shard. |
