*cough, cough, sputter, wheeze* Damn evil laugh is a bit rusty, guess I need to work on it.
Anywho! I'll get right to the point!
My RL doesn't generally afford me the luxury of being able to plan to sit down at the computer at a specific time as much as I would love to. The time I do get is somewhat sporadic and random, not to mention often interrupted. This doesn't make hosting an event/story arc very practical, but I do want to -try- and do something to help encourage rp of -all- the rp community. I do have a lot of time to write and work on stuff, just not a lot of time to actually carry out the ideas. I have thought of something I -can- attempt to do ...and here it is...
I will be setting up a vendor at my place today called "a dark traveler". He will carry "RP" rares and oddities. I have the ability to create items with specific crafter names and I'm going to use that to my advantage. Now most items will simply be something for rp decoration or a neat rp wearable. Some examples of are:
"A fishing pole crafted by antique walnut"
"A shoji screen crafted by polished crystal"
"A cloak crafted by magic"
"A (white) elven robe crafted by spider silk"
*A cloak crafted by orc skin"
*A (bloodwood) standing harp crafted by carved bone"
Most of these items will be generally 5-25k depending on if I had to use special materials and how hard it was to get the 'exceptional' so I could tag it. These items are mainly just to help give a bit rp flair to RP home designs, fun rp gifts to give one another, to equip rp npcs in a home, or just to give your character something to further their own individuality or to wear to some event.
Now... the really fun part...
In addition to those items, there will be a few items that will come in a colored bag with a book. These items have something attached to them and will generally be more expensive (50-100k depending on effect). For rp purposes the book is 100% ooc and will simply be a way to tell the "owner" in a OOC manner a very detailed description of the item as well as effects upon them. I am keeping a master catalog of all information in the book and will be asking the owners in the book to contact me in some way as I would like to keep general tabs on an item initially. Since non-rpers can buy from a vendor too, I want to make sure that the item does make it into an rpers hand initially. My idea is that a rper will buy an item for themselves or as a gift and the rp created will stretch across the community and through rp the "artifact" might switch players or what not, be rendered temporarily neutral or whatever.
Here's a physical description for example of one I am working on right now.. I am not going to post the 'effects' as I prefer keeping that private to it's future owner for rp purposes. (CB is the label for the items that are crafted by carved bone. That part will not show up in the book, it only helps me keep tabs on what items were used in case authentication purposes are needed by the community later)
Quote: | Name: Maelousic's Magical Murder Bag
RP Item: A Set of Doctor's Medical Instruments (CB Bloodwood Crate with CB shadow key and CB shadow key ring, CB Mortar/Pestle, CB sewing kit, CB scissors, CB Tinker's Tools, CB shadow skinning knife, CB shadow butcher's knife, green curved flask)
Physical Description:
An old bloodwood box inlaid with carved bone which appears to contain what once might have been a doctor's medical instruments. On the side of box is the inscription “Property of Broderick Maelousic, M.D.” The instrument handles appear to be finely crafted human bone with a carved symbol at the top of two fanged serpents wrapped around a staff with a pair of succubus' wings coming out of the top of the staff. For those sensitive to the nature of magical items or able to divine magic, the tools will give off a moderate aura of enchantment with faint traces of necromantic energies.
Those skilled in forensics will see faint traces of blood from multiple sources, mostly appearing to be human in nature in the deep crevasses of the carved handles. The scalpels are very sharp and even with heavy use, they will maintain an exceedingly sharp edge. The spools appear to have been used as suturing thread is preserved human intestines and do not appear to have any breaks in its length. If unwound and measured, they will stretch approximately eight meters in length, roughly the length of an adult humans intestines if stretched out as known by those trained in human anatomy. The mortar has been crafted out of part of a small child's skull and the pestle appears to be part of the thin arm bone of a child with the knobby end being used for grinding. Both appear to have been used as there is definite wearing of the bone where they have been rubbed together.
Contents of Box (RP only):
2 scalpels of different sizes, 2 spools of suturing material, a pair of forceps, several bone needles, a strip of blood-stained leather for applying a tourniquet, a pair of small carved bone scissors, a mortar and pestle, a small curved flask of dried-up paralytic poison.

Some other points about this whole plan...
~ I am willing (and prefer) to have the traveler move locations every month or so. I feel this not only adds to the realism, but might help players interact more. It doesn't have to be a shop, simply some place he might be able to stand out front and whisper to passerbys about his "oddities".
~ I will only be placing probably 2-3 of the "special" items on per month. Most likely one major and a couple minor ones. My reasoning for this is... if I was to put a bunch of them on then the community might be pulled in multiple ways leading to a lack of intensity. Since I want to see -you- all take these items and let the rp created lead you into subplots, wars, love affairs or whatever... I want to give the time and space to see those things develop.
~ The book with the "special" items will have a specific way to disable or destroy the item that will be need to be 'discovered' by the community. While as the creator, I'd prefer to see them disabled rather than destroyed, it will be in the community's hands. My preference with disabling vs. destroying is that later on a method of bringing the item alive again might exist and allow it to generate its chaos once again. On rare occasions some items may only be a one-time use so that they are nullified after it takes effect, so they will be 'permanently' disabled, but allowing a player to keep an item to remember the rp or what not.
~ Items will vary in their intensity. Some items might only bring about some minor quirk such as a fear or phobia and be generally relatively harmless and simply add to the rp of an individual. Others will be stronger and can possibly cause the character to do actions such as murder, etc. Some items may change the appearance of an individual such as make all their hair fall out (I would provide hair restyles to the buyer to facilitate the realism) or maybe even change their very gender (Again, with me providing the token). I am working on a system of rating the "special" items so folks aren't completely thrown for a loop as to how it will effect them, but part of the 'fun' of it should be the unknown and the rp that follows so don't expect me to label an item with "It will make you murder folks" or "Say goodbye to your fun bits"
~ As I mentioned, I will provide any initial items to facilitate the realism of the item's effects when needed. If it calls for something to happen to someone's hair, I'll provide the hair restyle to get rid of the hair and the hair restyles to grow it back gradually. If an item causes someone's gender to change, I will personally provide the token. I will provide the first token, and if its a temporary enchantment, the second to change back.
Now that I have explained my "evil" plans. I need some support.
#1. First and foremost is of course, use the vendor. If you find something your character likes please purchase it. I am honestly not trying to make a profit per say off the vendor, but I am trying to help defray the creation costs of the items and the soulstone fragments that I tend to gobble. I also do plan on donating some of the gold to rp events when possible to further give back to the community. All the work with the physical creation of the items and the work that goes into creating the rp behind the "special" ones are strictly volunteer on my part and something I want to do to help.
#2. Anyone who would like to welcome "a dark traveler" to stay awhile will need to PM me with the rp building/location, owner's name and contact info. Remember, the house needs to be a public home for vendors to be placed. I will probably have him change locations every 3-4 weeks. If it looks like attitudes might go 'hostile', he would move sooner.
#3. Some help in the believability of this project. For example the special item above describes two scalpels which are in fact a skinning knife and a butcher's knife crafted by carved bone. I can't always make the items exactly as rp would allow and as such I ask that you as players help by allowing your characters to believe that such things are as they described.
#4. If your character does purchase a "special" item, please keep the book private and share only information your character would know or information as needed to anyone who comes in contact with or examines it. If your character sells, gifts or otherwise loses possession of the item that you pass along the book to next owner so they become aware. It may be a struggle at times to keep from meta-gaming or god-moting knowledge on the item, but I ask everyone to try their best.
#5. Keep and build the rp. If the item effects your character in some manner or you witness the effects, write a short story on the forum. Not only does it help get folks oocly interested in participating, but it helps keep the story forum hopping which is a great thing for new rpers who might visit. If you have an item stick to the rp, but if rp allows someone else to get possession of it, please pass it and the book along to them. On the other side of the coin, many of the major items have a mind of their own and don't like to be given away from their owner, so if someone rps as being reluctant, even violent when it is tried to be taken, be aware that it might be the item and not the player being selfish.
#6. Any donations of items with rp names (a drow, a servant, a vampire) is of course welcome. Even if I only sell them as wearables/decoration and not use them as a "special" item, it still helps defray any costs if folks purchase it. Also anything you think might be helpful to facilitate the realism of a "special" item such as hair restyles, gender tokens, CBDs to help keep any "special" clothing wearables more safe from looting, basically.. most things that can alter the appearance of another. I will be adding to the very end of the book a list ooc of those who helped bring the item into existence either with their items, ideas, etc. (So you know who to thank ooc when hopefully you have a blast rping).
#7. Feedback and ideas. I of course am always open to feedback and ideas. If you have an idea for a special item or even just a rp crafter's name you'd like to see an item from, shoot me a PM with the information.
So, hopefully my plans will set well with the community and while I don't have the time to "manage" a plot, I can at least provide a unique catalyst for not only your personal and interguild rp, but in some cases the community as a whole. This idea will not be able to work without the community's support. -You- all are what will drive these items into the stories that are told for years to come. Please work together OOC and of course, always abide by the Rules of Engagement between guilds when interacting.
*Drops into a low curtsie* Thank you for your time and I hope you all will create some awesome rp and fun.
Disclaimer: There is probably some aspect I forgot to mention and I have probably butchered some grammar/spelling. I blame not enough caffeine and Sabine on whatever it is. If any of you have any questions, please ask. _________________

*laughs* Glad someone got the reference. While it doesn't have a big neon sticker on it, calling it that.. that's what I'm calling it OOC for S&G. _________________

Oh! One thing I forgot to add. "A dark traveler" will change from location to location. It might be "an old man" one place and the next "a young girl". This helps (imho) keep the realism and the inclination of folks to purchase items without ic concerns. I know if Ariana purchased a ring that made her spontaneously start castrating nearby men, she probably wouldn't purchase anything from -that- individual ever again. I will of course post on the story forum when he/she comes to an area to allow folks to know where it is.

Wow. I am thoroughly impressed.
I've done this before on a smaller scale, creating RP artifacts with backstories and such for little plots I had going on... but this... very cool.
I will do my best to support this. Please PM me if you need ANYTHING to help this get going, even ideas I have plenty of them.
ICQ is 69963826 if you need anything. |

Thanks Wolfe, Sia and Yia and everyone else who has PM'd me their support!
Going to put up the first "RP Artifact" on the vendor shortly, but first I thought I should post information on the danger/level system. This will be basically a way to understand how potentially life altering an object will be to your character. It will be a level 1-5.
Level 1 are minor alterations/changes that are usually temporary or easily fixable.
Level 5 has the potential to cause severe, permanent harm to the owner and/or may cause the owner to be put in deadly situations.
Keep in mind all items have a "positive" and "negative" to them. I can't account for all situations and the danger that may be caused by the effects, but these will be my best guess. If you have a question about an artifact you see on the vendor, please contact me. I won't tell you "what" it will do, but can give you a more personal description of the threat level to your character. _________________

Alright the medical instruments were purchased last night. Can the person who bought it, please PM me so I can just verify it is in the community and wasn't bought by some non-rper? Thank you! _________________

Know who bought it now and it is safe in the community's hands. I look forward to reading about where it goes from here. _________________

I considered the med kit, but, I don't play the char enough to justify it, when someone with an active char for it could use it.
I love this idea btw. Great holiday gift ideas, as well as for rp. |

My apologies on the delay of getting the next item out. I had to perform major surgery on my computer and just got to the point of installing software today. I'll be sure to post the story when I get the next one up. Thanks for your patience. _________________

Alright, I've had some confusion about what I'm doing, so I'm hoping this post helps clarify it for the community. If you don't understand, please ask because I'd rather try and explain it as many times as it takes rather than have folks misunderstand.
The vendor currently called "A Dark Traveler" is selling oddities and items from around the world. Please note: the description "a dark traveler" will be changing with it's next location.
Almost all that is sold on the vendor are MUNDANE items. They have no magical powers. When I make an artifact item I have to make a new character with the name and soulstone skills over to it. I make extra items in addition to the ones to be used as artifacts for a few different reasons. For one, because I am not planning on charging more than a 100k for an artifact (this latest is only 50k for example) and they aren't that frequent for good reason, so the sale of these mundane items help not only vendor upkeep, but the cost of the creation of the artifact and having to soulstone skills (an average of 4 skills each time) to and back to my normal crafter. The second reason is to give rp players some fun attire (such as crafted from orc skin, fairies, ancient dragons) purely for the helping to express their individual characters rp personalities in rp settings. Thirdly, it gives rp characters a way to decorate their characters in a fun way. If you live in a crystal-walled home, than perhaps you'd like furniture crafted from polished crystal. An the final reason that comes to mind at the moment, is giving players some fun rp-ish items to give as gifts either during holidays, birthdays or to woo their sweethearts. These mundane gifts generally cost 5-25k, the price primarily based on the rarity of the materials such as using asian slime-dyed cloth, or ice-white bod cloth.
Alright, so now that I explained about the mundane items and why I have them. Let me answer a few other questions I've gotten over the last couple weeks for anyone else who might have the same questions.
Question: "Do you plan on using the vendor to make a profit?"
Answer: No. All gold is primarily used to help defray some of the cost of the item creations -and- some of it will be donated periodically to events held by the rp community for use as prizes, supplies, etc. My goal is to not only help the rp community with a few artifact items that further rp in-game and to also give folks some personal items, but that in doing so the gold folks use towards those will be returned in part back to the community.
Question: "How do I tell which items are mundane and which are artifacts?"
Answer: Very easy. All my artifact items are always bagged with -two- books which have the titles "Physical Description" and "RP Effects" which give the owner a detailed description of not only what the item looks like for stories and rp purposes, but also all the effects and triggers of the item(s). I work hard on these books and try to put a lot of thought into making the items balanced and making sure the player is left without questions on how it works.
Question: "How many artifacts have you created?"
Answer: Only two. One was the "Maelousic's Magical Murder Bag" which has an owner in the rp community and the latest one, "The Telescope of Lunar Virtues"
Question: "Why can't we make our own artifacts with the other items?"
Answer: It comes down to my own concern over my reputation since this is kinda of a pet project. If someone buys an item I sold for strict decor/attire and makes some god-tastic artifact that makes all females in a 50' radius want to have their babies... guess who that would come back and bite in the rear? Moi'. I was really hesitant about doing this because of such things hurting my reputation. I put in many, many hours of thought and consideration into each artifact before I create it not only that it isn't too damaging, but also the potential it has to generate plots for the rp community. Folks have already used some items to make "powerful" items, but I ask that folks please respect my wishes on this.
Question: "I have a great idea for an artifact! Can I share?"
Answer: Great! Please if you have a suggestion for an item, please PM me with it. I'm always interested! Please keep in mind that I do not make "scripted" events, I only provide the players with the items and their "effects", where those effects lead them in rp is up to the players. I truly believe that some of the best rp out there is the type where folks have some mystery and magic to what is going to happen.
Okay, those are all the questions, I've gotten recently and hopefully by answering them here, it helps anyone who maybe had that question too. I know this project is a work-in-progress and it may not be perfect, but I ask folks give it a chance and have some fun. I truly hope with all my heart that folks get some entertainment and some exciting rp. Thank you all who have showed your support via messages and also via the vendor... truly, thank you. _________________

Oh! One more...
Question: "I bought ____ can I give it some history?"
Answer: I personally don't care if you treat an item as -your own family's- long lost heirloom, or whether it is something from your past. I just ask if another family/character is attached to the history that you please clear it with them and do not contradict any past fiction. For example: Using an item and saying it was created by some past player of the ebon skull when it wasn't = not okay. Just use some common sense, don't intrude on past rp of others and don't "recreate" history. Also, please keep these items mundane and do not have "powers". If you character wants to believe that this might be a dagger that his father created and that it'll make him fly and your character jumps off a cliff with it, he'd better plummet like a rock. Any questions about this sort of thing please ask. I'm pretty open about mundane stuff, history on items.. again, please just respect others, past history and be smart about it. _________________
