With one final push, the man was free from the cold ocean’s grip. His face, covered by an unruly mass of seaweed and hair, beamed triumphantly. The lords of the sea had tried to cut his life short, but chance had found him on the shores of Moonglow. The man rose to his feet, his legs shuttering from weakness and fatigue. With one great effort his right left swung forward in a haphazard arc and was soon followed by its twin. With each step the pain and stiffness began to melt away. The man moved slowly into a lightly wooded area and found himself a log to relax on. With a sigh, he collapsed onto the log, his drenched clothes saturating the ground around him.

“Well…Malicite…I guess that’s my name,” spoke the man softly to himself, “what manner of existence have you found yourself in?” Malicite sprawled across the log and closed his eyes slowly. He tried to visualize the events that led to his near drowning, or, for that matter, any memory which would indicate how he found himself in this lightly wooded area near the ocean. His mind could only wrap itself around two memories. One, where he was a leader, of sorts, standing with his brothers in Virtue against the forces of chaos and evil, the other, he stood against those same warriors of Virtue as a Lord of Shadows. It was not clear to Malicite which memory was reality and which was a dream.

After a moment of thought, Malicite rose painfully and wandered towards the lights of Moonglow. He could smell food cooking and realized how hungry he was. While he cut a path through the forest, he pondered on his predicament. Whatever past path he had traveled on, Malicite knew that he would discover who he was and where he came from. He would soon discover what was real and what was merely a daydream.

Rhiannon closed her bank box, muttering something about her son having broken all the windows in the house, again. She strolled to the west gate, greeting a few citizens along the way. As she neared the edge of town, she spied a gentleman she had not seen before. Upon closer inspection, she noticed he was drenched and seemed a bit disoriented.

“Sir,” she questioned as she approached him. “Sir, are you alright?” The two proceeded to speak. Rhi learned his name was Malicite, at least he thought it was. She nodded encouragingly and listened carefully as he told her what little he could remember. Seeing he was in need, she escorted him to the Healer’s. She instructed the medic to care for the gentleman and to then show him to the Scholar’s Inn on the west side of town. She smiled tenderly to the stranger, “No worries of rent right now, sir. Moonglow will gladly assist you while you get back on your feet.”

Twilight cast a dark shadow over Malicite as the last beams of sunlight succumbed to the birth of night. The smoke from the blacksmith next door held heavy in the air and a faint scent of horse made his head swim. He rose from his small bed and peered disinterestedly out the window. At the other end of the inn, he could hear the sound of people entering the inn and approaching his door. The door shuddered as someone firmly struck the door twice.
“Malicite?” a woman’s voice called out to him, “it’s Rhiannon and I have brought someone to meet you.”
Malicite crossed the small room in two steps and opened the door. Before him stood Rhiannon and a tall man who seemed to be some type of soldier.
The man rubbed his chin for a moment and smirked, “Well Malicite, it has been a long time. I hear you are having some problems with your memories, so I guess you don’t remember that I am Vaen Swiftar.”
Malicite stared blanked at Vaen, unsure of how to respond. After a moment, he whispered, “Sir Vaen, please tell me of my past.”
Vaen dismissively waved his hand and muttered, “in good time Malicite. For now, you will earn your keep around here.” Before Vaen finished speaking he pushed a sheathed radiant scimitar into Malicite chest. “Malicite, you’re going to ensure the safety of the people of this island until we get your business sorted out. Cause any trouble and I’ll send you back out to the sea.”
Before Malicite could respond, Vaen turned and walked away.
