In the aftermath of all that had happened, Zeyla found herself increasingly disdainful of human companionship. The animals were so much more easy to understand, and being out riding the beautiful landscape of Sosaria was beyond compare to anything any type of relationship could afford her.
But, like so many of the creatures she worked and tended day in and day out, humans tend to be social creatures. Taking the advice of a person she'd spoken to in the not so distant past, Zeyla had begun making some rather futile attempts at rejoining the human community.
There had been one attempt at a tavern night outing which Zeyla regarded as a relative failure. She returned to her the life of the ranger, being seen and found only when it suited her, which was rare. But the urge for companionship again surfaced and she found herself wandering into the storied Den in Umbra. Umbra was a perfect city. Its occupants were quiet and offered no hassle.
She found herself actually relaxing, enjoying a pitcher of milk and listening to the tunes being played. There were several people about and it was often her tendency to watch others. People could be so fascinating.
Then Asher walked into the door. It'd been a few years since she'd seen him but her reaction was the same as it was so long ago. Her stomach fairly flipped, her heart raced. She remembered the horrible crush she'd had on him and never really got over, and talking to him when he approached her was difficult.
The conversation was much like the many they'd had in the past. Naive, somewhat geeky, very awkward when not discussing things like libraries and studies. When he told her he had gotten married, the news stunned her as if she were hit by a metal club. Zeyla tried her best to maintain her composure but it became impossible, and she bolted from the Den.
She and her mount rode hard through the woods, scratches and cuts appearing all over her body as she'd not been wearing her armor. Eventually they came out to the road.
Zeyla dismounted, sat on a fallen log, and cried terribly for the longest time. When the fit of emotion was over, she was angry.
Furious. With herself.
The girl wondered how she could ever face him again after the news. The little voice of reason whispered to her brain that she had no choice but to deal, and that the time to have acted on her feelings was long past. It was the other little voice of reason that was most disturbing. That voice told her to never, ever, let anybody into her heart.
It would only hurt. Eventually. |

She did her best to avoid the frustration of being hurt and angry. She cursed herself for having such a strong emotional reaction to the news of her old friend's marriage. Shame also came with the rainbow of emotions Zeyla felt. What she should have felt was happiness for someone she cared so deeply for. But there was nothing she could do to change the past and was doing her best to deal with the present.
Somewhere in her travels she had heard mention of a gathering at the hostelry in Sanctus. Knowing she had to persevere with being among people.
Up until that night, Zeyla had thought she put alot of issues behind herself. She soon discovered they had really only just begun. |

Gryss ab'Arawn received his notice early in the evening, as a crow flew to his arm with a note attached. As he broke the bond and scrolled it out, the back of the scroll contained a somewhat ridiculous "O" on the back of it.
Anxious, aren't we Ordin?", Gryss mused to himself, but nevertheless he had use for him, so he read its contents. Shortly after, he threw crumpled up the note and threw it aside, letting whatever critter scurry off with it. Looking off into the moon above the dead trees now, Gryss stood discouraged by what he had red.
"Hanses, Ordin? Sanctus? Truly?"
The name through him into a somewhat sour mood, but it would have to do. Dismayed, but not detoured, Gryss opened up his runebook and quickly skimmed to the proper spell that he help him reach the location.
Muttering the words, he shimmered off into nothingness in a veil of black light.
Appearing now behind a simple household, Gryss took to his belt and made sure that each weapon would be ready for instant unsheathing, not that he liked the idea of coming inside this territory unarmed, but his business was not with Sanctus. As he strode up the road, he could hear a blunder of noises from within the tavern ahead. Many flickering lights and laughs could be heard from inside, but one lone shadow of slim frame remained at the edge of it, inside.
Gryss took notice, then entered.
Entered, he did, into what he had already anticipated to be a mess. Lightbringers and characters all over Sosaria littered the tables, stools, and walls. Each bragging, or simply talking too loudly, of their own business. Through all of this though, Gryss's peering eyes rested only on the same woman he saw from outside, to his left.
The girl seemed very quiet, almost as if she was afraid, or just reluctant to socialize. Quietly, he slipped onto the wall and stood next to her, as it would have seemed to have been the spot that would attract the least amount of attention.
His eyes scanning for Ordin, and his arms crossed, he watched, and waited, for his contact to appear... |
