|
I have read quite a few of the guides already on how to roleplay, but I still haven't worked out whether, each time a player roleplays, has he/she worked out beforehand (with all his/her other roleplaying friends) what they are going to be doing during that whole roleplaying scenario? I mean, does one player or a few players firstly have to come up with a "script" beforehand? And then, does each player log onto his/her character in-game to act out this script as if playing an actor in the making of a movie?
I guess I'm asking how much planning is generally involved prior to a player logging his/her roleplaying characters into the game. Are other roleplayers (who have not been involved in the planning process and who have not been invited to participate) allowed to "gatecrash" that particular roleplay scenario?
It would really help if some established roleplayers can use some examples to describe what is involved in the production of a roleplayed story.
Well, maybe it is opportune for me to firstly explain what I usually do in UO and what has got me interested in roleplaying.
I am first and foremost a Rares Collector. I have built up a small but very high quality collection of rares, which I use to decorate my house and wear while banksitting and showing off in Luna. (Yes, send me all your flames to my hatemail address...) If you look at my avatar on this forum, you can see my special orc helm, which is "A Dark Orc Helm". It has +15 Stealth as one of its properties. Over the years of wearing this rare piece while banksitting in Luna, I have realized that there is a very interesting tale to be told about the dark orcs and their legacy. I have already got part of this story written up on my character's paperdoll scroll. Here it is:
The dark orcs cowered in fear as their leader prostrated himself before the humans, begging for mercy.
"Damned orcs!" the captain sneered. "Kill them all!"
As the last of the dark orcs lay dying, a terrible curse was uttered.
That night, the captain returned home to celebrate his victory over the orcs. He culminated his revelry by forcing himself onto one of the maidens.
Nine months later, I was born into the world of the humans - and the revenge of the dark orcs on the Royal Guard began...
A few years ago, I found that I had reached a dead-end in my rares collecting hobby, when the rares which I was coveting were all being tightly held by various other rares collectors as the crown jewels of their respective collections...and no one wanted to let any of them go. The other side of the coin was that the rares which I was keeping, which were being coveted by the other rares collectors - I had no intention of selling.
Faced with this impasse for a rather long time, I eventually stopped playing this game for a number of years, but I kept my account active because I still felt a strong sense of responsibility towards some of my rares - some of which have a quite a lot of history behind them. Recently, however, I came back to this game with the intention of having one last shot at completing my rares collection. If I still could not get anywhere, however, my plan was to sell off all my rares for RL$ and leave the game for good.
It was when I returned to the game that I found a lot of the pieces which I had previously wanted - had become duped, some of them rather heavily duped. It is now therefore well within my means to complete my rares collection. However, I asked myself...was there really any much point to it now, when the pieces I had previously coveted, were now (relatively) common? Also, I was being offered hard-to-believe prices for some of my rares, which, because I did not participate at the height of the duping frenzy, have become some of the last remaining rares in the game which are highly desirable and unique!
At this time, I came across a roleplayed UO story with screenshots on the internet, where another rares collector I know from Atlantic, played a part - using his rares as props. His character also wore "A Dark Orc Helm", and I became intrigued by this use of rares as theatre props in UO, thereby contributing to the UO community experience and giving the rares an entertainment value. This is when I started to seriously consider roleplaying as an option. This is how I came to this forum.
At this same time, I found out that a new way to dupe is being used, which is threatening to collapse the whole rares market. I am facing the dilemma of whether to sell my rares, in which case they will most likely become duped over again and again until they are ruined as rares and no longer anything special. On the other hand, if I do not sell them, I risk being severely financially disadvantaged if the market collapses.
All the rares collectors whom I respect are asking me not to sell my rares while this duping is going on. I tend to agree with them. After all, it is not as if decorating a castle with 1M checks for the carpet is a very good look...
So, I am researching the feasibility of roleplaying with the rares while I have them in my care.
My main base of operations is not currently on Atlantic. However, being a rares collector, I do have lots of gold on Atlantic and it will not be hard to relocate to this shard. I have not made any decision as to whether I should relocate to Atlantic or stay on my home shard. Regardless, this forum seems to be the best place for knowledge on roleplaying. I do have lots of good housing on my own shard, in very desirable locations, which will be advantageous when it comes to customizing them for roleplaying purposes. On the other hand, there seems to be a much more active roleplaying community on Atlantic, which perhaps will make it easier to find enough "actors" (if that is what is done when people roleplay) to participate in my roleplaying scenarios. I have logged onto a character on Atlantic, and I have found that this character is perfectly useable for peaceful roleplaying purposes. I have no interest whatsoever in PvM or PvP anyway.
Anyway, thanks for reading this very long post. I am looking to learn the ropes of roleplay, and any advice, help or comments would be appreciated. |

Greetings and welcome! I think when most people roleplay, they just log in and look for people to roleplay with. There's a few roleplay hotspots where people hang out, usually a tavern. Sometimes, I log in with an idea in mind of what I want to roleplay or people I want to go seek out and do stuff with, but a lot of it is on the fly. I like to think of it as interactive storytelling.
If you want to roleplay with your rares, one possibility is that you could open a house as a museum. Around Umbra there is a wax figure museum that has historic figures and books in front of each display that explains their history. It would be cool to have a rares museum that explained the significance of the items in it, especially if it has a rich story behind it such as with the Dark Orc Helm. |

Welcome to Atlantic!
We lost our Rare's museum a while back. Xanthar used to have an awesome one in Fel on Dagger Isle (The ice island with the shrine). If that is something you had in mind that would be great.
If you are looking for roleplay:
If you have a good (meaning not evil) character then Sanctus, which is the NPC inn south of Luna down the south road just before you get to the caves, would be the place for you to start out. It is set up like a tavern and inn and has a stable in the back. It is called Hanse Hostel officially on the UOAM if you use it.
There is a player run tavern on the road into Umbra, just three houses from the bridge. If you are an evil character then that might be a starting place for him/her.
There are other taverns as well as meetings and events all over but it is easier to find out about them at either of those locations than anywhere else.
I hope you choose Atlantic to stay and join us! _________________ Grand Duchess Molly Kaldhel

Welcome to Atlantic,
I personally think that having a Museum and its Curator(yourself of course) would be a great addition to the RP Community and a possible future hotspot for RP and you dont need to PvM or PvP. After reading your post i feel you already have al the tools you need to be a great Role Player. And if decide to venture to the dark side Umbra and CAP would welcome you and, even if you go to the goody two shoes, we'll still welcome you.... Hope to RP with you soon. _________________ "Sic Gorgiamus Allos Subjectatos Nunc...

The Grand Britannian Reportory is outside of Zento, containing nearly 2,000 player-written books for public viewing. |
