The drows Nimrana and Bae'vin arrived after the Protectorate meeting began in the palace at Nujel'm. Many people crowded into the large room. He noted the mages and warriors of Moonglow occupied the southern edge in a tight formation. Those from other nations stood here and there without assuming such a show of force.
The drows quietly moved to a corner from where they could see most of the room. About this time Talon Skyfire began to speak. He spoke of a virus in the world that threatened them all. He hinted at treachery among those attending. He spoke for some time in bombastic tones and expressions.
Finally, Bae'vin, never patient with long winded speeches or egotistical persons, left the meeting. Nimrana, sensing a fight in the offing, remained to see the bloodshed.
Talon finally got around to naming names, namely Moonglow, as the cause of his anger. Nimrana did not blame the human for his frustration. Sanctus had lost many good warriors in the war against the Armunn Empire's efforts to take Minoc and Vesper while Moonglow had not bothered to fight at all.
Yet it was Moonglow who gained control of the cities through the machinations of Vaen Swiftar and Beowulf Thormear who changed sides more than once while playing the various sides against each other. Nimrana greatly admired their deviousness and was sure they must have drow blood in their ancestry.
The mood in the room became very hostile as Talon made his accusations and Moonglow took exception to them. He saw Vaen don his gloves and loosen his weapons and noted the Moonglow troops follow his example. He saw warriors of every nation murmur and begin to look to their own defense.
Then he saw Ivory Wright. She grew pale as she sensed the unrest and heard the bellicose tones. He saw Langois, a Sanctan, lean down and exchange whispers with her. He saw Roger de Clare, a Free Lancer, quietly take station behind her. He saw Ivory nod her thanks to them. Nimrana slipped through the throng to take position from where he could cast spells of protection on Ivory.
He often wondered why Sanctus did not take better care of this matron of theirs.
Many voices raised in declamations. Battle seemed certain. Then Adrien Garnier managed to bare the brunt of it and turn the tide of hostility into quietude. Nothing was decided except that they would not fight now and the meeting ended.
Nimrana followed Ivory Wright through a magical gate to Sanctus. Saw Langois fuss over her as she tried to calm herself after the trial she just endured. He rudely stepped between them and gently took her arm, softly speaking her name so the blind woman would know it was him. She suddenly seemed very relieved and dismissed Langois.
He escorted her home and sat with her in her den until she felt ready for bed. She refused his offer to spend the night. He said, "Nothing ventured..." She laughed, "That's the Nimrana I know!" He bade her a good night and left. |
