Up to my neck in horse manure. Or so it smelled like. A restless night of sleep in the dungeons of Blackguard kept my lower back in knots. Sleep was wonderful as ignorance is bliss. Unless ignorance was not listening to the direct orders of your Lord Commander. And it does not help if the Lord Commander has had an extensive background in the law.
Law was meant to be obeyed. There is virtue itself in the law. Justice, Honor, and Valor. If the law was broken by a man who followed the Apex of Infinity, then he should be disciplined. What better learning experience than to be doused with a dose of Humility?
Not much to mucking the stalls, that is if you are doing so in a small stable, unless you do so for the stables that house the steeds of the Kingdom. Though it is back breaking labor... And not to mention... slip... Damn it!! Not again. Slithered through my mind as I took another spill. "Who knew that horse crap would be so... Slippery" I questioned loudly after my hind quarters crashed onto the hard stone floor of the stables.
Blaine's laugh only seemed to become more deafening, mixed with the whinnies of the horses. Blaine chortled, "Seems you missed a pile."
I sighed softly. I do deserve this, next time I will listen... No! there will be no next time. I thought.
Are you a seer? Can you see what will happen next time? The familiar, yet faint, voice mocked in my head. "You're not there!" I exclaimed.
Startled, Blaine jumped back, he then began to cluck more laughs at me and said, "Surely you jest son, I am very much so here!"
My cheeks burned as my face turned a bright crimson. I shook my head and pulled myself to my feet. Who am I? Was a constant in my head. But that didn't matter now. The sun was beginning to set, that only meant dreams were to come. My first day of hard, back breaking manual labor was almost over. And my bed at Hanse's was singing like a Siren's song to a weary sailor.
"Well boy, I was informed that your days work would be over at sunset, so I do be expecting to see you bright and early in the morning." Blaine paused before going on, "Before the rooster crows, and do not make me send for you!"
I scooped the last smeared pile of horse droppings into the wooden wheel-barrel and pushed it to its designated area before I left for my bed at Hanse's. The crow may caw before the rooster's cluck. The voice jeered. I would not dignify myself with a response this time.
When I found my lodging, a small humble room in the northeastern corner of the Hostel, I knew that as soon as my head hit the bed I would be deep in slumber. So I quickly undressed and neatly piled my clothing in the corner. I would welcome dreams tonight, though I learned part of a valuable lesson today, an escape from reality was starting to be a welcome part of my nights.
Before I could find my comfort zone in the bed it was the quick fade to black of sleep. No screaming tonight in my dreams. Just the pleasantries of fonder times. My heart knew that morning would come. I could find peace in that, the unknowing on the other hand was not comforting at all. |
