The sun would rise in just a few hours. There was still much to be done and time was no longer as plentiful as it once was. Riven made his way through Minoc, door by door. He moved quietly and quickly, checking his time piece after each brief stop. Everything was moving ahead of schedule.
The resistance had spent the better part of the day prior, prepering the citizens for thier night time escape. Those that did not wish to stay to fight and those that were unable; children, elderly, pregnant , and wounded had all been told what was to come. Those that did protest, insisted that they could fight. This was a town settled by free hardened folk, most did not take to the idea of invaders forcing them under new rule.
The siege had been hard, but all knew that the walls would not hold the attackers back much longer.
"Your bags ready?"
"Take only what you need."
"Will you need help getting to the ships?"
"Move quietly."
"You shall return home soon."
Riven seemed to repeat these words over and over as he moved through the city. The responses were usually the same. Everyone was prepared, they had packed light. Even the most feable and wounded insist on caring themselves.
"I will not leave my city, being carried! I go on my own accord, knowing I shall return,"an old women had told him.
Such a strong people. Riven found himself growing very fond of this place and it's inhabitants. This was no longer "just a job," it had become very important to him that these people be safe.
Ten minutes after Riven had seen to the last tent of prospectors, he moved his way through the sea of people. They waited, bags in hand on the Western coast of Minoc. They all waited quietly, still. They stared over there ravaged city like the proud statues they were so fond of carving.
"The boats will be here shortly." Riven whispered as he passed. The waiting nodded and smiled.
"Thank you!" a small voice said from behind him. He turn to see that same old women.
"I thought you dark skins, were the bad ones. I reackon my Pa was wrong about ya'll," she said.
"Your Pa was right. I'm as bad as they come." Riven winked at the old women and moved on.
The boats arrived soon there after.
"Looks like your contact in Vesper, is sound one," Eldan said, steping out of the shadows.
"Thought I smelled you...you had doubts?" Riven replyed without turning around.
They watched as the Queen Ann's Revenge and two of her sister ships glided into the bay and docked as close as they could to the jagged shoreline.
Lady Gwen walked up to the two whispering. had no idea that we would be riding with Pirates!"
Her teeth were meshed and here anger was obvious.
"Drunkards and Thieves. I am suppose to entrust the lives of family and friends with Pirates!"
"Such an ugly word...I prefer privateer!" Riven said with a smile.
"I can assure you everyone will be safe. A fair bargin has been struck to ensure everyones safe transport," Eldan added with his normal bravado.
"No one knows the sea's better, than the man behind the helm of that ship," Riven pointed to the Queen Ann.
"He will get you to Skara Brea before you know it," he continued.
Lady Gwen stomped off angry but seemingly satisfied.
The rest of the dark covered hours were used to fairy the Minocians from
the beach to the awaiting ships. As dawn broke the three ships could be seen as dots on the horizon, heading fast to Skara Brea with the wind at thier back.
The first part of the operation was complete. The town was clear. Her people safe. Those that remained were ready to fight and die for Minoc.
Riven made his way to the Caves of Mount Kendall to prepare for phase two of Minoc's Final Defense.[/i]

The Warden look visibly exhausted. His body was on the verge of collapse. He was just finishing assisting the loading of passengers when he remembered the wounded woman he had found last night. He would send someone to fetch her and get her out of here, she was an innocent as well. But still...the presence of someone on the eve of what the Militia was predicting to be the Big Push of their enemy was.....too convienient.
He would need to be cautious this evening. They still did not know exactly who he was...but one can never be too sure. Eldan didn't worry, he had a few that were staying quietly in this area to make life difficult for the conqering human empire should they be forced to retreat this evening.
His mind was on war, as it had been for the past few weeks. Eldan was done explaining himself to this Dark Order, done justifying what he did here. Perhaps Calamyr was right...they know nothing but what they serve.
Why should I have to answer to them? They hold no bloodline to the rulers of these lands. Their time shall come, and I will be damned if they will harm these people. Eldan had little time or patience for laws, especially the ones that the short lived human race tried to force on people.
Throughout the siege, both the Militia and the United Alliance had done well, considering very few of them had official military training. Most were here either to defend their homes, or to save these people from taxation and oppression. This was The Warden's element. He was used to the odds being stacked against him...
The Warden walked the front line now, making the necessary preparations. This night would decide much, if they were victorious, he might be fighting like this soon again. With that last thought, he looked to the south, awaiting the coming battle. |

The harvester stood on the mountain top looking with his keen elven eyes out over the town and to the lands beyond. He sniffed the air. Something was coming. The darkness was pushing toward Minoc with great strength.
The town would soon be as ready for the inevitable as it would ever be. Most of the citizens had been saftely wisked away by boat. The ones that stayed would fight. The archer was ready too. He had spent most of the day helping and watching, praying and planning.
The defenders would give them no mercy. The darkness would intern show none to the defenders of Minoc. The darkness of Oblivion was approaching as the defenders settled into their defenses. |

Blackbeard leaned back against the railing of his ship stroking his beard slowly. He watched as the the flood of people where hurried onto the decks of the ships. A grin came across his face, 'Aye well worth the price indeed, one hundred barrels of rum, twenty barrels of pitch, and fifty bars of gold. All that for a simple sail from Minoc to Skara Brae, Tis easier then pirating a naval vessel!' Blackbeard patted his first mate on the back heartedly.
The first rays of sun began to peek over the horizon as Blackbeard barked out orders to his crew and the crews of the other ships followed suit. The slapping of the sails filled the bay as the wind grabbed them hungrily.
A quick trip to Skara Brae, for a small fortune... Well worth the crowded ship decks indeed. |
