Merrique did not care if strange things were afoot. The reality was, the man she adored above all else had simply vanished without word, with days dragging into weeks. Putting gold into a small pouch, she lamented over her sorrow about the whole situation; Merri had heard something to the effect of travel taxes in the lands of Dark Cove and had no idea what to expect. She just knew what her heart told her to do. After obtaining a rune to the bank there, she chanted the words that took her to the lands that Gen served.

Her heart was beating too quickly, her pulse racing, as she looked around. Not knowing quite what to expect was worse, somehow. She looked around and saw the townspeople going about their business, and this pained her heart; her own daily routines had been disturbed by constant worry and fear. After all, when Gen last rode into Umbra at her beckoning, differences were put aside--proclamations and promises sworn. Merrique winced inwardly as she remembered telling Gen that she loved him, and the wry smile that he offered in reply. "I deserved that," she thought at the time, and resolved to show him her words were heartfelt. She reminded herself that he was drow, and she human. Certainly emotions were among the items one might list in that cultural divide.

Rapid footsteps brought her to the gates after walking all over the little city proper. Her hand shook as she pushed open the gates and began methodically looking at the many signs on the buildings away from the gates. She called out greetings as she walked, occasionally even calling Gen's name. A half hour or so later she found herself at a place that could have been a headquarters of some type, and her hand continued to shake as she lifted a pen to the message board there. Hastily she penned a brief and heartfelt missive begging anybody who knew Gen to pass along her inquiry.

Unable to admit to herself that Gen's promises rang hollow, she wandered the town a little while longer. Upon arriving in her hometown, it was suggested by someone there that she'd lost her mind to do what she had.

Merrique found irony in the idea that finally allowing and recognizing a good thing in her life may very well have brought her death to her.

And she found she didn't care.

. . . But the dark is very trustworthy.
It's always as dark as you thought it was.
And you don't have to work at staying there.
All you have to do is survive it.
And I've been doing that forever.
