Lee stood in her bedroom, staring out the window into the forest thinking of her younger sister. Each day that passed without the knowledge of Tie’s whereabouts and well being, crippled Lee more and more. Her head was heavy, and her muscles were weak and unsteady. She kept her head high, trying not to slump. An unnamed emotion made its way through her body as thoroughly as her blood ran. Her shoulders trembled as it wrapped around her heart, filling her lungs until the pressure felt powerful enough to burst through her chest. It wanted in. Like a monster, it wanted to break into her heart and devour her very essence. She called on all her will to remain standing, not to let the emotion overcome her, not to go mad…She imagined locking a gate next to her heart. The monster screamed with anger and expanded even further in her chest. What was it? She dared not name it as doing so would mean letting it in. She knew, somehow she knew, that if it got in – it would kill her.

Her knees gave way and she knelt to the floor, bringing both hands to her heart. She pressed her nails into her chest, digging at the pain…She fell to her side curled in a tight ball, fighting to restrain the monster. The sight of a parchment lying under the bed sent a piercing pain through her gut and a quick flash of light blanketed her mind. The pain in her body became paramount. What was this daemon before her? She reached out her hand towards the paper, but just as her fingertips touched it another flash of light brought an image to her mind’s eye. The image in her dream, the dream that had sent her to find Tie, flooded her mind: Tie’s face melting, flesh blistering and ripping.

Lee’s eyes opened wide and she gasped…the monster was unlocking the gate. As she read the letter, its words joined hands with the monster, and together they annihilated the gate. The monster rushed to the center of her heart and like a whirlwind began to consume all inside her. She met the monster face to face; he introduced himself as Grief – simple, formidable Grief. Tie was dead and Lee could not bare it. Just before her heart broke in half she whispered a spell, Vas Flam, and the suicide note burned in her hand, leaving nothing but a pinch of ashes sprinkled over her scorched hand. Her body lay still. Her eyes remained open – frozen. Her only movements were slow, shallow breaths that were carried for her by the power of Grace…and Grace alone.

Twas twight. The moons had just begun to rise. The shimmer of moonshine glistened off the water and bathed the zoo in an eerie semi-darkness.

The zookeeper lay on his back with his hands behind his head looking at the stars as they came out to shine their own luminescence upon the stairs of the zoo. How many times had Lee been there next to him? They used to talk for hours in this same position but now she was nowhere to be seen. In her place, lay Remi, beginning to snore loudly. Remi was a wonderful companion, but when Daz went to reach for Remi, he yearned for Lee’s touch instead of a handful of fur. Lee had not been herself as of late. She had missed several dates and seemed out of place when they did actually get to see each other. He let his mind wonder.

Her duties at the Lycaeum were taxing and then there was Rhiannon to consider. He let it be no secret; the zookeeper had never trusted that one. Despite everything that Lee and Daz had done for her, she still lacked understanding, let alone following many of the virtues.

And then there was the younger sister of his fiancé. Lee had found her and brought her back, but now she seemed to be missing again. Probably just on another hunt, he suspected.

He headed for home. The zookeeper stopped by the florist and purchased flowers and some candies for his love before placing the arrangements all over the steps and the first floor of the house. Perhaps these will cheer her up. He heard no signs of Lee as she was most likely asleep, as the hour had become quite late indeed.

When he ascended to the second floor, there was Lee. She was curled in a tight ball and laying on the floor completely unresponsive. He rushed to her side, pleading for her to wake up but she would not. He brought water to her lips, pleading for her to take a drink but she would not. He waved the flowers and candies under her nose, pleading for her to come to but she would not. Tears filled his eyes and began to cascade over her body.

Beat beat, beat beat. She was still alive and breathing. Daz, picked her up and laid her on the bed. He uttered spells to heal his love but to no avail. He tucked her in and headed for the roof. He looked out upon the city. Then he began to yell at the top of his lungs, MEDIC! What had happened? Oh, he knew. He new all too well. Then he Screamed, RHIANNON!

Rhiannon pulled the blanket tight over her body. Lee had fallen in to some unknown illness; her body was limp and unresponsive. The healer would not allow anyone into the house where she lay, hopefully recovering. Rhiannon had camped out at the bottom of the steps, as close to Lee as she could get. Rhiannon shivered and decided to put on more layers of clothing. She slid a robe over her shirt and skirt, wrapped up in her cloak and then pulled the blanket tight again. She curled up in a ball and tried to get warm.

As she got herself situated a slight pain in her side reminded her of Daz. She scowled at the thought of his name. He was impossible! Already he was blaming Rhiannon for Lee’s condition! She growled a bit at the thought. Then, to add insult to injury, he had hit her with a magic arrow claiming he had right to discipline her while Lee was not capable. Discipline? DISCIPLINE? "That elf has lost his mind," she thought to herself. First of all, she was 22 years old and she’d be damned if anyone was going to discipline her. Second, IF she were young enough for discipline then as sure as the sky is blue she would not take it from Daz. When he cast the arrow at her she had used all of her will to resist using some of the dark magic against him. Just a little pain strike…She grinned slightly - wickedly. She had done well and had resisted. Lee would be proud of her for controlling her emotions.

Lee. The thought of her name caused the anger to fade and she began to cry. She pulled her sleeve over her hand and began wiping the tears away with her palm. She had been so ungrateful to Lee…

She had to sleep…she must be rested so to have energy to do anything required to help Lee. Pleasant thoughts…pleasant thought…Lee had taught her to calm herself at times like these. Pleasant thoughts…Yasa! The girl who runs the blacksmith shop whom she had met today, before learning of Lee’s condition, in Moonglow. She was a lot of fun, although she did seem to be a bit of troublemaker…Rhiannon laughed a little, wiping another tear away. Yasa had tried to convince Rhiannon to go to a tavern in some place called…what was it…Umbra. Rhiannon was very excited until Yasa told her they could not wear their Moonglow colors there. On this note, Rhiannon thought twice about going. The tavern did sound like trouble…but as interesting as a little trouble was, what would Lord Fong think about a place that did not welcome Moonglow? She didn’t think he would like it, so she refused to go.

At the thought of his name she began fiddling with the jewelry he had given her today. Jewelry! He must fancy her as mush as she fancies him! She fiddled with the necklace, nibbling on the citrine stones. A pleasant smile began to emerge, but before it could settle warmly on her face the thought of Lee crept back into her mind. She sighed heavily as the pleasant thoughts faded. She lay awake in the cold for hours until exhaustion finally took her to sleep.
