The return to Cove went much better than she could have imagined. Lady Ditto embraced her and led her straight back to the guest room she once lived in. She knew almost at once what she must do and after unpacking she put on her best attire and made her way to Sanctus. She would show her new family that she could do as she once promised.
She spent the majority of her time sitting in the tavern. After many days spent listening and talking she could only remember a few small items of importance being discussed. Each night before she would fall asleep, she would pull out her journal and write down the occurrences of the day. Small talk was one way of finding out information, but she knew she soon must find a target and pursue.
After days of watching those who frequented the tavern she finally found her target. Malic M’real, Sheriff of Sanctus. She used her most common tactic for her first encounter, mainly because she knew it was fool proof. Sitting in the corner of the tavern by herself, she pulled a flask, full with what she claimed to be sake, and poured herself a glass. A true gentleman would never let a pretty woman sit alone; she knew that all too well.
”May I join you?”
She nodded shyly to Malic. ”Care for a drink?” She asked, knowing well what his answer would be, ”No, thank you m’lady.”
It was with that answer she knew the night’s events would fold out just as she had planned. They spent many hours laughing and talking, as she hastily sipped on her “sake”. The night grew darker as the tavern began to empty; it was time to make her move. She stood and quickly played faint. Malic’s face quickly went from content to concern.
”I do not feel so well.” She looked to him, her small hand gripping his arm for stability.
”Here, come, sit.” He guided her into the bedroom nearest their table.
She sat on the bed as he kneeled beside her. She enjoyed acting drunk; it definitely gave her an upper hand. She could pretend to be disoriented and do things that soberly could not be done, but still have no consequence. His face was close to hers as he kneeled beside her and she placed her hand upon his face, immediately feeling the welts of scars.
”What happened?” She asked, seemingly interested. ”I know a few things that may help.”
He took her hand off of his cheek and set it onto her lap. ”Rest, do not worry about me.”
She laid her head down on the pillow as he sat beside her for what seemed like forever. Finally she sat up. ”I am feeling much better. Shall I attend to those scars?” She knew this answer would either prove her success or her failure.
”Come, let us go to my house where we will have a bit more privacy for such matters.” He said as he held out his hand to help her to her feet. She smiled, not for his generosity, but for her win. |
