Posted: Fri Oct 12, 2007 2:08 pm Post subject: Community Feedback: GM Equipment Reform |
|
One of my members, Marcus, is pushing a community wide gear reform. I would like to start a civil discussion here and gain everyone's feedback.
The basic premise of the proposal is as follows:
Quote: | All persons in the ARPC will limit themselves to only grandmaster quality (or lower) equipment during inter-community PvP events. |
I myself am not completely sold on the idea, and Im sure others may feel the same way.
Off the top of my head, I came up with these arguments for and against the proposal:
Pros
1. Supposedly balances the playing field. (I am not convinced of this.)
2. Allows newer players to easily adapt, without spending ridiculous amounts of time/gold acquiring high end artifact equipment.
3. Revitalization and increased demand for crafter good and services.
4. Elminates super-powerful players who are practically invincible? (Again, not convinced)
Cons
1. The glory days of GM equipment used an entirely different mathematical system.
Years ago, there was only AC (Armor Count). Currently, there are specific resistances that are NOTHING like the old system. We CANNOT change this, as it is a server-side game mechanic that we have absolutely no control over. In switching to GM equipment, we will undoubtedly unbalance combat in favor of some other combination of skills and gear.
2. God-like PvPers will not be elminated.
Every system known to man can and will be mastered and/or exploited for maximum results. It is my opinion that those who are proficient at PvP deserve to be, given the hard work they have put into practicing and acquiring. For the record, I am not a great PvPer by any means. I respect those who are.
3. Punishing the Adept
We may end up losing members of the community, especially the RPers who are also good at PvP. This will seem like a punishment to them. Not many people are willing to see the hard work and effort they put into their characters go to waste.
4. Enforcement
This will be a nightmare to enforce. I, for one, do not want to inspect every peice of gear on 15-30 people before a battle, or monitor the enemy's gear during the battle.
My Personal Conclusion
EA has handed us a steaming pile crap in the form of our PvP system. I doubt anyone knows the specific calculations that go into PvP, which would only result in unbalance in another area.
The days of GM equipment are gone. The days of GM equipment arent returning anytime in the foreseeable future. We cannot recreate the magic of that time period by switching gear; too much has changed that is beyond our control to ever replicate the old system. Get over it, adapt, overcome.
This is a novel idea with the best intentions in mind. However, I think we will solve one headache while creating more to take its place.
Please give your feedback on this issue. _________________ ~Lord Talon Skyfire

As you said, there are pro's and cons about it and you listed most of them.
Balance:
What about pets then? A fully trained dragon or white Wyrm would chew up and spit out anyone using GM only stuff.
Or magery. Since we limit the attack and defense of a melee warrior, do we also limit the spells of a mage or necromancer?
And Jewelry: how does that come into the balance.
What would be maybe more sane is a case-by-case scenario. When someone is challenged, he can decide wether go full arty or gm-only.
But that's just my two feathers. _________________ Reality, the refuge of those who fail in RPGs

I agree with much of what you say Talon. I feel that the gm armour system once worked quite well. Yet many who have played on the Europa shard will back up what Talon has said. They are working on a GM armour system but they have had to limit not only armour but what specials, spells ect can be used in combat. To the point where so many rules begin to take the fun out of it.
You will have mages with god like powers, a mage with protection can inflict damage of enormous proportins and not be interupted. This is just one example of the great imbalance that occurs thru the use of trying to revert back to the old gm ways before ea *changed* their pvp system. You cant fix just one aspect like armour and leave the rest untouched it creates numerous imbalances.
I could see maybe some small skirmishes involving rp that is based on gm armour but largely as a community I would not suggest we try to switch to something like this as a whole. It is best to leave these issues to the dualing entities and their gms then try to push ourselves into every other guilds rules.
I applaud the intent I know it has a nice rp idea behind it but I do not think it would work in this day and age of UO in any sort of fair manner. _________________ May destiny guide you... |

Oh my.
I thought this was a standard policy.
I have done this since joining Role Play 8 + years ago...And only in the last year even wore something other than GM for monster hunting on my own. That was only after being convinced IC by Leshok that I needed to allow him to protect me, with light magic gear. Too many numbers, never have looked at them. *grins*
When did anything but GM become acceptable?
I must be terribly out of date then...:/
Like the idea, liked it when it was implemented 8 + years ago, like it today. But but my preference considers no numbers, or magics, or skills, or other things mentioned since I do not pay attention to such things.
Also, whether re-reformed or not, I like wearing GM, it suits my Role Play.

It's good say for tournaments but in the actual playing filed it's a bit limiting.
Our alliance uses the GM armor for like gladiator games time combat. In an actual battle it can be more trouble than it's worth. You have to then eliminate pets and some magery spells, with hat you run into people feeling left out. The gm armor only is great just for melee vs. melee.
I however, remember when there was just Felucca and getting avanquishing weapon was the bomb. The system and schematics is far different now. _________________ "There is in every true woman's heart a spark of heavenly fire, which lies dormant in the broad daylight of prosperity; but which kindles up, and beams and blazes in the dark hour of adversity." -Washington Irving- |

Unfortunately with the way EA has changed the PvP system, both GM and non GM armor will have the same effect.
For example, spells don't rely on damage increase based off items, and a single scribe mage can usually throw out instant kill combinations, and necromancers can completely decimate armies.
The only way a GM armor system will work now is if we impose template regulations in some way, which in itself causes many problems.
I believe the time to choose whether or not we all wanted to use GM armor was at the advent of AOS, and we all chose not to keep the tradition.
Mind you, having some battles using GM armor between guilds could be fun, perhaps even an experiment if someone would be willing to give it a test run. _________________ "There are those who dream to escape reality, and there are those who dream to change it." |

Straight up naked...
Melee use a dark colored robe and a vendor crap wep. Casters use a light colored robe and no jewlery.
cant get any more balanced then that. |

I agree with the points that Talon and Sir Robert brought up.
The ONLY way a dexer can even compete with a mage is with items.
If you look at most games, etc. Take away a fighters equipment and the spell casters crush them easily.
Besides, I already have a lot of documented RP tied into some items. Such as the growing power and regeneration of the Daemon.
and...
Labelle, that policy was only for select battles back then really. Was never truely the policy and it didn't last long.
If the game still had the Pre_AOS system, then I'd be all for it. Being the 2 hit lumberjack that I was back then.
Frankly I know in the past that this is a bad topic/heated topic and should prob just have people forget about it and just concentrate on RP. |

We would be adding so much complication to combat and monitoring it that at least acusations of rule breakages would be unavoidable.
This would bread an enormus amount of drama, negative feelings towards one another, and as a result destroy every bit of headway we have made as a community.
Keep it simple
Allows us to concentrate on important things.....ya know, like roleplaying and having fun |

I have to agree with Halister on this.
PvP has been balanced (by EA) at the high end with equipment, "backpack pvp," and template combinations. Balancing it toward the average poor rper by requiring gm armor wouldnt really serve that purpose unless you restricted skill levels and certain templates.
AFAIK, everyone in the RP community is quite mortal.
To improve, you really only need a good template, decent items, and then lots of pvp experience. |

In the past just after AOS came out we tried to limit what we had to GM items. We even went so far as to require equipment checks by non-combatant 'inspectors'. It became very complicated and was dropped after the first few battles. We tried to limit things to items that were roleplay possible and even that went out the window.
Pretty much now as long as your character can explain why they can be say a paladin in Umbra then it is pretty much acceptable. Necromancy has some restrictions in some guilds but that is guild specific not overall.
Personally I have played Europa and it is very strict. I don't see Atlantic roleplay headed in that direction. The community here has adapted to the new items and going backwards would only cause problems. _________________ Grand Duchess Molly Kaldhel

I am pretty much with the majority on this one. All GM armor standards would make PvP unequal between players of different templates.
I am against all GM armor.
Those aren't paladins in Umbra, Molly, those are blackguards.

I had said a few days back that I would go with it if at least half the community did as well. It would be a good experiment and learning experience. I'd be willing to try. (would have to errm....prod Taro with cookies first)
Unfortunatly, the vast vast majority would like it, but doesn't think it possible, & I must agree. But, being how I am, I would be willing to do an experiment on it. A single battle or what not. If that happens, ICQ me and lets get something going. Couldn't hurt.
I'm with LaBelle about the numbers. So confusing. _________________
