Kaedence was replenishing her potions. Her training had wiped her out. She enjoyed making these. It seemed that she had finally found her calling. Her talents with alchemy had been growing. Watching Dragothein and Cear for months. Kaedence had been itching for months to try her own concoction. It had taken her months to convince her mother to let her begin her training. As soon as her mother gave her blessing, Kaede hit the ground running. With this new skill she finally felt like she had a purpose with her group.
Varrius was attempting to learn alchemy along side of Kaedence. Though, he didn’t have quite the knack she did, not for the everyday potions. Kaedence helped him as much as she could, in exchange he showed her how to poison weapons. Another skill she was enjoying.
Hearing the clank of empty bottles caused Kaede to turn and watch how he was progressing. She saw him with one bottle of an acid mixture and one of water. She saw him begin to pour the water into an acid.
“Varrius, NO!!” That’s all she got out before a single drop of water dripped into the acid causing a slight explosion. Once the smoke cleared Kaedence laughed. Varrius was covered in soot that had been emitted from the mixture. She heard him grumbling about poisons were the only useful potions as he looked for something to wipe himself off. Laughing Kaedence threw a cloth at him.
“I don’t think I’ll be as good at this as you are Kaede” Varrius said catching the cloth.
Secretly she knew he was right but replied, "Aw Varrius you just need more practice is all, maybe some extra lessons with brother Cear and brother Dragothein would do you some good" She said with a nod and returned to her task. She heard him muttering under his breath, "the only useful potions are poisons"
"Varrius, mind making some poisons for me? You're much better at it than I am"
"Sure!" He said relieved to be practicing something useful in his mind.
For hours to two worked making concoctions and filling bottles. Both concentrated on their task and neither speaking, other than to ask for something the other happened to be near. When her supply of reagents ran out and not another mixture could be made with her remnants Kaedence turned to see how Varrius was doing with the poisons. She furrowed her brow when she saw that he hadn't bothered to fill a single vial. He was feverentely working over a cauldron constantly adding more and more nightshade to the mix. Varrius was so focused on his creation that he didn't even see her approach him.
"Varrius! You're still mixing?! It should have been cooled and bottled by now. I'll have to wait longer now to put it on my blades. It's not that hard to make it you know!"
"I didn't make just a poison Kaede, I mean I did but I wanted to make it better. and look," He motioned toward the cauldron which was bubbling a swampy almost black mixture as opposed to the bright green it should have been.
"What is that?" She asked.
"Uhm, my creation," was all he said in reply. Kaedence counted to ten and then proceeded to count to twenty.
Why can't boys just follow simple instructions! She sighed and said, "Well bottle it up, I want to get started."
"Ooh I want to test it first!"
"what are we going to test it on?"
"what are we going to test it on?" Kaedence heard the stupid parrot from across the room. I've never liked them anyhow always squawking and mocking us She thought as she reached for the bright red bird.
"Perfect Kaedence" He said with a smile. Varrius unsheathed his dagger and dipped it into the poison. Then he took the bird and ran the tip through it's stomach. The bird proceeded to squawk with pain. It looked almost as if it were trying to heave its insides and before a minutes time had passed the bird dropped with a plop and died on the spot.
"Whoa, that was fast Vari, really fast." She began to take out her own Kryss and dagger and laid them on the table. She took an empty vile and filled it with the poison careful not to have it come into contact with her own skin. Kaedence began to apply the poison to her dagger and asked, "so how much nightshade did it take to make this"
"Uh, all of it" Varrius said quietly busying himself bottling the poison.
Kaedence's grip on her dagger faltered and slipped "All of it!!?? That was a month's supply Vari! It's only the first week of the month! What am I supposed to do for the......" She never finished her rant. She began to feel ill and dizzy. Kaede looked down at her hands thinking that she had gotten some of the mixture on her skin. What she saw was that when she lost her grip on the dagger she had sliced her palm that had been holding the poisoned steel. Now the poison was going straight into her bloodstream. Pain and nausea consumed her thoughts. Twitching just as the bird had when it received its own dose, she began to convulse violently, knocking over some of the empty bottles and vials to the ground. Kaedence tried reaching for a cure potion but she fell to the floor writhing in pain.
"KAEDE!" Varrius yelled finally becoming aware of her state. He ran to her and exclaimed

"EXPOR FLAMUS"

As soon as those words of power were spoken Kaedence felt a searing burning sensation on her palm. The burning hurt worse than the poison but she was no longer nauseous. Her writhing had stopped. Not wasting a moment Varrius shouted

"OBSU VULNI"

The gash on her palm began to mend itself.
"Kaedence, why don't you stick with weaker poisons for now?" Varrius said heaving as if he just ran ten flights of stairs, looking down at her with wide eyes. If she hadn't almost just died she would have said something like "that's what this was supposed to be" But she just stared into his concerned eyes. A few moments passed before she made an attempt to even move. "Kaede you ok?" Varrius asked concernedly.
Unsure, she stood there just looking at him, as if she had been looking at him for the first time ever. When her gaze met with his eyes she quickly looked away. She felt the heat rise in her face. She pulled herself up and turned away from Varrius. Straightening the askew bottles became very important at that moment.
What's wrong with me? I've known Varrius forever! Her head was slightly bowed allowing her hair to cover her face. But to her horror her normally swirling iridescent hair color had turned crimson. No fair!! It's only supposed to do that when I am mad! Kaedence could only assume her eyes were the same shade to match her hair. She couldn't think of what had brought this on, she wasn't angry. She stood there trying to will her hair color back to normal. Taking a few calming breaths she asked casually, "Is all my nightshade really gone?"
"Yes, I'm sorry I'll get more" Varrius replied quickly noticing the color of her hair.
" No it's fine" She sighed, "I'll just be with out for awhile" Kaedence was relieved to see that her hair color had returned to it's normal coloring.
"Well......wanna go to the barracks?"
"uh yeah sure, you bottle the rest of this up and I'll go get my cloak." Kaedence replied. As Varrius bottled, she quickly sent a wisp to their parents letting them know they had finished and were going to Willow's barracks. A small iridescent wisp left her hands and made it's way to Blackrock. She grabbed her cloak and returned to her lab where Varrius had just finished bottling. She looked at him once again and felt her face go red once more. She promptly put on her cloak making sure she put the hood on her head. She turned on her heel and said,
"I'll meet you there" and walked out the door further wondering what her problem was.
